"Verfahren zum Nachweis eines Hüllschadens an Kernreaktor-Brennelementen"
Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zum Nachweis eines Iiüllschadens an Kernreaktor-Brennelementen."Procedure for the detection of shell damage to nuclear reactor fuel elements"
The invention relates to a method for detecting filling damage to nuclear reactor fuel elements.
an Spaltprodukten
untersucht, denn ansteigende Spaltproduktaktivität
läßt
auf einen Hüllenschaden schließen. Da das Kühlmittel
aber
von sehr vielen, bzw. allen Brennelementen gleichzeitig her-
kommt,
Feststellung,
welches Brennelement defekt ist, nicht möglich. Mit Hilfe veränderter
Betriebszustände des Reaktors, wie
z.B. Neutronenflußabsenkungen in einzelnen
Bereichen der
Spaltzone kann das defekte Brennelement unter erheblichem
Zeitaufwand
lokalisiert werden. For the detection of damage to a fuel shell in a nuclear reactor, various methods bekannt- After this process' the coming out of the reactor coolant is examined Beinar concentration of fission products in terms, because rising fission product activity is indicative of a hull damage. But because the coolant is the same manufacturer of many or all fuel elements, is an easy localization of the damage, that is, the determination of which fuel is defective, not possible. With the help of changed operating conditions of the reactor, such as, for example, neutron flux reductions in individual areas of the fissure zone , the defective fuel element can be localized with considerable expenditure of time.
In a further known method , the outlay on equipment is very large; by removing part of the coolant flow from each fuel assembly, guiding it through the reactor pressure vessel by means of pipes and examining it in a known manner for fission product activity.
gestattet
und welches die Nachteile der bisherigen Verfahren
vermeidet, bei dem es
insbesondere nicht notwendig ist, aus
dem Kühlmittelkreislauf
des Reaktors durch gesonderte Rohr-
leitungen Kühlmittel nach außen zu
führen. The object of the invention is to create a method for detecting shell damage to nuclear reactor fuel elements, which allows the immediate localization of the damaged fuel element and which avoids the disadvantages of the previous method , in which it is in particular not necessary to extract from the coolant circuit of the reactor through a separate pipe - Lines to lead coolant to the outside.
This is with the method according to the invention for detecting a Hüllschadens to nuclear reactor fuel Inventions according achieved in that the beta activity is measured by the coolant which flows past the fuel element casing immediate bar in the radiation field of the reactor. While only the beta activity of the cooling medium activated by the neutron radiation is displayed in the undisturbed reactor operation, damage to the shell caused by the escape of fission products into the cooling medium increases the beta activity and thus increases the measured value. This increase in the measured value is particularly pronounced where, in the event of a cladding damage, a large number of fission products are briefly released, such as with the more and more frequently used U02 fuel elements, in which a high fission gas pressure can build up in the fuel element before the cladding damage occurs and then as a result of the physical properties of the fuel and the construction of the fuel assembly, a lot of fission products escape in a very short time. Here, several fuel assemblies can be combined into groups and the beta activity of the coolant, which is jointly conducted via a beta activity detector, can be measured immediately after it has flowed past the fuel assembly cladding. The fuel element whose shell is damaged can be determined particularly quickly and precisely if the beta activity is measured in the outflow area of the cooling channel assigned to the fuel element. Because of the simultaneous occurrence of neutron radiation and gamma radiation , it is advantageous to measure the beta activity of the coolant by means of a condenser, at one of which electrodes, which is permeable to beta radiation, the coolant flows and whose two electrodes are connected to a current measuring instrument . Since the cooling channels are mostly pipes , the beta activity of the coolant is preferably measured by a cylinder capacitor, on whose outer electrode (jacket electrode), which is permeable to beta radiation, the coolant flows and whose inner electrode is impermeable to the beta radiation that has penetrated until then , is carried out, for example, by appropriate dimensioning of the thickness. This method has significant advantages over the previously known designs in that all fuel assemblies can be monitored simultaneously and continuously for damage to the cladding. In addition, continuous monitoring makes it possible to measure the discontinuous release of fission products to be expected from U02 fuel assemblies. In previous plants, because of their discontinuous mode of operation, there is always the possibility that, in particular, the first large release of fission product, which occurs when the U02 fuel element is damaged in the shell, is not detected. Furthermore, the method does not require any pipeline penetrations through the reactor vessel for extraction pipelines.
The method according to the invention is explained in more detail with reference to the drawing: On the cladding tube 1, which forms a fuel element together with the nuclear fuel 2, the coolant 3 flows within the cooling channel formed by the cladding tube 1 and the jacket tube 4. In the outflow area of this cooling channel, the beta activity of the coolant is measured by a cylindrical capacitor formed from the tubular electrodes 7 and 8 and the dielectric 12, in that the coolant flows past the outer capacitor electrode 7, which is permeable to beta radiation. The measurement is carried out by connecting the two capacitor electrodes to a current measuring instrument 11 via the leads 9 ′ and 10. The indicated electrical current is produced by the beta particles 6, which enter the dielectric 12 from the coolant through the electrode 7 . if the beta particles are trapped in the dielectric, a displacement current is obtained. The dielectric can, however, also be designed so that the majority of the beta particles can penetrate to the electrode 8, then the electrode 8 is expediently designed so that it is impermeable to these beta particles and collects them. Active fuel particles or fuel fission products enter the coolant 3 through damage to the shell 5 and increase its beta activity considerably, so that the damage in the fuel element shell is displayed on the current measuring instrument.
