Um den Zustand von Primär- und Sekundärelementen beurteilen zu können, bedient man sich vielfach eines Spannungsmessers, welcher die an den Klemmen des Elementes herrschende Spannung angibt. Nun ist aber ein Urteil auf Grund dieser einen Messung bekanntlich durchaus nicht richtig. Denn ein Element kann z. B, 1,4 Volt, also die normale Spannung anzeigen; sobald aber der normale Strom aus dem Element entnommen wird, sinkt die Spannung sofort auf einen geringen Wert und ergibt somit die Erschöpfung des Elementes.
