Description
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
JV* 142713 KLASSE 12/. JV * 142713 CLASS 12 /.
The subject of the present invention is an apparatus for the recovery of alkalis Electrolysis of concentrated salt solutions (sodium chloride, potassium chloride and the like), with mercury circulates in a known manner between the anode and cathode compartments and acts as an electrode as well as serving as a metal carrier. With the known devices either only the mercury is the carrier of the electrical current between the different ones Chambers of the apparatus or else the mercury moves on one at the bottom of the Metal plate arranged in chambers, which infolgedesse.n part of the flow from the directs one to the other chamber.
Because of the lesser or greater accumulation at all points in the mercury of the alkaline ruling different conductivity occur with the known Apparatus, especially when higher currents are used, cause large current losses. Using larger currents was previously only possible when using larger amounts Mercury possible, although the latter could not prevent large power losses either. According to the present invention is now provided on the bottom of the apparatus Metal plate on which the mercury circulates between the anode and cathode chambers, isolated from the mercury over the greater part of its surface, so that one of the Mercury as independent conductor as possible is formed, which current balances between himself and the mercury above him, in which the latter different in all places Current densities prevail, prevented.
In the accompanying drawing, FIG. 1 is a longitudinal section through one according to the present invention Invention executed apparatus, Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through a cell and FIG. 3 shows a section according to 3-3 of FIG. 2, while FIG. 4 shows an enlarged scale represents executed detail.
Each of the two vessels α b has in a known manner a number of similar compartments c separated from one another by plates g (FIG. 1), each of which consists of the two side walls d and the base plate e , and which alternate as anode and cathode spaces to serve. According to Fig. 1, the ends of the base plate e are designed so that they form trough-like depressions h into which the lower edges of the partitions g dip and which are filled with mercury so that the liquids in the compartments remain completely separated from each other. A pump i serves to lift the silver from the lower vessel to the upper one, while it can flow from the upper vessel through the pipe j into the lower one. The anodes expediently consist of a number of interconnected graphite carbon plates m which are connected to the positive pole of the electricity source by the terminal ρ (Fig. 2). Each compartment c is provided with an inlet and outlet opening st .
Nach vorliegender Erfindung ist nun die Metallbodenplatte e, durch welche der größteAccording to the present invention is now the metal base plate e, through which the largest
Part of the flow is passed from one chamber to the other, provided on the inner surface with narrow grooves ff (Fig. 2 and 4), the spaces between which are filled with porcelain enamel or with another insulating coating. However, one could also apply the enamel in strips even with a smooth inner surface of the metal plate, so that grooves remain between these strips. It is essential that the plates e, which are connected to one another by conductors χ , only come into contact with the mercury above them to the extent necessary for the current transfer from the mercury to the plates e , in order to equalize current between the better conducting plate e, in which a uniform current density can be assumed, and the mercury above it, in which, because of the different accumulation of alkalis, different resistances and consequently different current densities prevail in all places, to be avoided as far as possible.
It is consequently possible in accordance with the present invention to use higher currents to be able to occur without current losses. The one for transferring the decomposition products from one chamber to the other The amount of mercury required is significantly reduced because the mercury acts as a feeder for the current is excreted as possible and mainly only as a carrier of the Is used for decomposition products.
The interposed electrodes e are connected in a known manner by a lead wire y to the negative lead r in order to conduct part of the current directly back to the electricity source. The amount of current flowing through the wire y can be regulated by the regulating resistor \.
Of course, one could also use the apparatus described for the electrolysis of others Use products. There are so that the mercury can flow easily through the compartments a slightly inclined position for each vessel.
