The Supreme Court, often the center of great national controversy, some-times passes through years of relative quiet, when more often than not the justices agree among themselves and with the nation. Joseph Rucker Lamar served on the Court during such a period. The character of the times very much accorded with his own steady temperament, the model of a southern gentle-man. Unfortunately, he suffers the inevitable dividend of quiet times: obscurity. History dotes on crisis, calamity, and confusion. Never called on to encounter these, Lamar was forgotten almost as soon as death removed him from the Supreme Court.
