PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
Berichte 4, 661 und 26, 207).In the previously known condensations of a-naphthol and phthalic anhydride - which were carried out without the use of a special condensation agent - is only naphtolphtale'in (naphtofluoran), that is, one produced by the coming together of 1 mole of phthalic acid with 2 moles of a-naphthol Dinaphthylphenyhnethaneivat has been obtained (see Reports 4, 661 and 26, 207).
It has now been found that if a-naphthol is mixed with phthalic anhydride with the addition condensed by concentrated or fuming sulfuric acid, the reaction proceeds quite differently, by only ι mol. a-naphtol with 1 mol. Phthalic acid comes together, whereby first a-Oxynaphtoylbenzoic acid is formed, which then passes further into oxynaphtacenquinone by intramolecular dehydration.

The behavior of a-naphthol towards the Phthalic acid is therefore different from that of phenol (see Ber. 7, p. 968). While from phenol and phthalic acid in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid with gentle warming Phtalemes are formed by the formation of phtale'ins from a-naphtol and phthalic acid The presence of sulfuric acid has not been ascertained, but rather it forms, as from the below, even with gentle warming naphthoylbenzoic acid.
Naphtacenquinone derivatives have hitherto only been obtained in a complicated and costly manner (see Gabriel & Leupold, Reports 31, 1160 and 1272). The present Process, on the other hand, allows bodies of this series to be obtained conveniently and cheaply.
Hierbei entstehen,The method consists, as already mentioned, is heated to a DAF-naphthol with phthalic anhydride and concentrated or fuming sulfuric acid at temperatures of 100 to 250 0th The smooth course of the reaction is greatly aided by the addition of boric acid, which here evidently has a protective effect. This creates
je nach den Versuchsbedingungen, a-Oxynaphtoylbenzoesäure, Oxynaphtacenchinon oder Oxynaphtacenchinonsulfosäure. depending on the test conditions, a-oxynaphtoylbenzoic acid, Oxynaphtacenquinone or oxynaphtacenquinone sulfonic acid.
For the conditions under which these three compounds arise, the following may be suggested Clues serve:
The formation of oxynaphtoylbenzoic acid takes place under the mildest possible condensation conditions. The connection is z. B. preferably obtained when the condensation with an acid of 80 to 95 pCt. H 2 SO 11 content is carried out at 100 to 140 °.
In the case of increased reaction conditions, e.g. B. when using an acid of 95 to 98 pCt. H 2 S O 4 content and a temperature of 120 to 150 0 or with an acid of 90 to 95 pCt. at temperatures \ r on 140 to 170 °, is obtained Monooxynaphtacenchinon.
When using stronger acid such as sulfuric acid monohydrate or fuming Sulfuric acid from 1 to 30 pCt. Anhydride content and temperatures from 130 to 200 °, one obtains monooxynaphtacenquinone sulfonic acid. To represent the latter connection can it is expedient to begin the condensation first with a weaker acid and then afterwards and add after fuming sulfuric acid.
The above information about the strength of the acid and temperatures are of course not absolute Grenzwerthe, you can z. B. of course within certain limits with a weaker acid at a higher temperature achieve the same result as with one stronger acid at lower temperature.
Its sulfonic acids *) behave similarly to a-NapbtoI itself, e.g. 1-4, 1 * 5 and ι · 8 a-naphthol sulfonic acid and that is obtained here, depending on the conditions, oxynaphtacenquinone or oxynaphtacenquinone sulfonic acid, which is identical to the oxynaphtacenquinone sulfonic acid obtained from α-naphtol itself.

(Representation of a-oxynaphtoylbenzoic acid.)
Hierbei geht die Oxynaphtoylbenzoesäure mit gelber Farbe in Lösung, während etwa schon gebildetes Oxynaphtacenchinon als schwer lösliches Natronsalz10 kg of a-naphthol, 10 kg of phthalic anhydride and 10 kg of crystallized boric acid are mixed with 60 kg of sulfuric acid at 90 pCt. In this case, the oxynaphtoylbenzoic acid goes into solution with a yellow color, while oxynaphtacenquinone which has already formed is a sparingly soluble sodium salt
Ber. 28, S. 314).*) The presence of sulfo groups does not prevent a condensation to the anthraquinone derivative, how it z. B. in the case of dioxybenzoylbenzoic acid (see Ber. 28, p. 314).
From the filtered alkaline Solution, the oxynaphtoylbenzoic acid is precipitated by an acid and made from benzene or a mixture of benzene and Ligroi'n recrystallized. So small yellowish crystals are obtained, which in acetone, alcohol, Glacial acetic acid is extremely easily soluble, less soluble in ligrom. In alkalis is the Compound with an intense lemon yellow color and becomes soluble from this solution Acids precipitated as a yellowish, cheesy precipitate. The solution in concentrated sulfuric acid is brownish yellow and when heated with the addition of boric acid - by adding Oxynaphtacenquinone is formed - intensely bluish-red with vermilion fluorescence.
(Condensation der α-Oxynaphtoylbenzoesäure zu Oxynaphtacenchinon.)(Condensation of α-oxynaphtoylbenzoic acid to oxynaphtacenquinone.)
Man giefst hierauf die Schmelze in Wasser, filtrirt den braunrothen Niederschlag ab, wäscht neutral und trocknet.10 kg of the α-oxynaphtoylbenzoic acid obtainable according to Example 1 are mixed with 50 kg of sulfuric acid of 97 pCt. H 2 S O 4 content and 10 kg of crystallized boric acid heated to 120 to 140 ° until the melt has become intensely bluish-red and the intensity of the color no longer increases with prolonged heating. The melt is then poured into water, the brownish-red precipitate is filtered off, washed neutral and dried.
The oxynaphtacenquinone obtained in this way is sparingly soluble in alcohol, glacial acetic acid, benzene, and is more easily soluble soluble in hot toluene, nitrobenzene or pyridine. From toluene it crystallizes in red Needles made of pyridine in shiny leaves.
The solution in concentrated sulfuric acid is intensely purple in color; on the addition of boric acid the color becomes somewhat more yellow and clearer, and then shows a vermilion fluorescence. The spectrum of this solution consists of a strip between yellow and green and a strip in green. In oleum of 80 pCt. S Og content dissolves Oxynaphtacenchinon with intense green blue color. In alkalies the substance is extraordinarily difficult to dissolve with a red color, and more easily soluble in aqueous piperidine with a crimson color.
When distilling with zinc dust, the naphtacene described by Gabriel is obtained.
