Description
KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL
K PATENTAMT.K PATENT OFFICE.
It is known that bodies containing carbon, such as mineral coals, charcoal, wood, Even cereal grains and sugar molasses have the property of being the glass mixture in the To color melt red; however, nowadays that method of coloring the glass is used by means of carbon almost never applied, because there are a large number of them of disadvantages in the wake, the greatest of which is that of hard coal in the never-certain-way of attaining it of a desired color. This fact, as is well known, is due to the great contamination of this body with others Constituents, especially metal compounds, its reason. Also the dry, ground dusts Hard coal very strong, blows in the. Port because of the escaping gases and therefore does not allow the enamel to come to rest. The one preserved in the latter The color is seldom red or reddish-brown, but rather the hue is continuous a dirty brown to olive color because of the contamination of the carbon.
Lignite and peat do not have these disadvantages, but their application is also has only recently taken place, so that we have not yet had sufficient experience with the use of these substances have collected. In general, however, it is also allowed it can be asserted here that they clean the glass because of the escaping gases postpone.
Not every type of wood appears to be advisable for coloring the glass with charcoal. rather, only birch, alder and palm woods are suitable for this purpose, which can be obtained in the following way:
Furthermore, the ground, trickling, 'mixes in charcoal forming smooth powder because of the great diversity of the specific Weights only with difficulty with the glass mixture, it dusts very heavily and is relatively moderate expensive, so that since the other carbonaceous materials cited are for the general application in practice can hardly be seriously considered at the moment in the glassworks the red hue of the bottle glasses only comes through almost without exception Manganese dioxide and iron oxide are produced, which substances are much more expensive are like the above, but a relatively safe effect in the wake to have.
B. genügen, den Rufs —■ nachdem man ihn gegebenenfalls noch mit einem Bindemittel (Zuckerwasser oder dergl.) versehen hat — durch einen starken Druck so zusammenzupressen, dafs er seinen flockigen, haltlosen Zustand verliert und sich zu KlumpenNevertheless, the carbon can also be used to achieve the point in question Purpose - without the disadvantages described above - to use bring it, if one according to the present invention it in as pure a condition as possible, namely in the form of Rufs, the Glass batch added after having previously prepared an appropriate one to avoid dusting Has received treatment. This treatment can be a purely mechanical one, but also a chemical resp. be physical. In the first case it would e.g. B. suffice the call - ■ after adding a binding agent (sugar water or the like) to it, if necessary. has provided - to compress by a strong pressure so that it has its flaky, loses unsettled state and turns into lumps
Plates clump together, which then after being on a certain Degree of crushing have been brought into being mixed with the glass batch Ports or tubs are brought.
Instead of this treatment, however, one could also get the reputation with melting alkali salts (Soda, sulphate, potash, etc.) or solutions of such soak, then dry and only then in the aggregate that naturally results from this or lumpy states after previous crushing again with the glass mixture mix.
Finally, there is also a third one Possibility of avoiding large amounts of dust when using Rufs by calls of the highest possible density are used. The density of the call depends on the type of burn it is receiving Owes its origin, and it is known, for example (see patent specification 105633 of class 22), that the call is caused by the intense heat acting on the incomplete combustion can be obtained in a specifically difficult variety. Such a reputation does not and has a disproportionately high specific gravity, which is why it is used in the manufacture of arc lamp coals is used and therefore also the residues of this fabrication as a replacement can be used for him to color the glass.
So while one of the aforementioned treatments of the disadvantage of dusting the Rufses is completely eliminated, he shows before the other carbonaceous ones mentioned at the beginning Substances also have the great advantage of considerable purity, and also of unconditional Reliability in the achievement of every desired shade, a high specific one Gewichfes, of a warm, strong, almost garnet-red hue in the enamel, the cessation of the blowing of the latter and finally almost compared to the brownstone nine times the coloring power, so that only one part by weight of reputation is necessary to obtain the same color is what nine parts of medium grade brownstone would be required.
