Die bisher in Werkstätten gebräuchlichen Schmirgelfeilen bezw. Schmirgelhölzer besitzen viele Nachtheile. Bei den ersteren mufs man die Schmirgelleinwand ganz um die Feile herum legen und mit der Hand festhalten, wobei ein grofser Theil derselben ungenutzt verloren geht, während die Schmirgelhölzer nur einmal gebraucht werden können, da dieselben einer starken Abnutzung unterworfen sind, weil die aufgeleimten Schmirgelkörner auf dem Holz nicht so gut halten, wie auf der Leinwand. Das Schmirgeln durch Einölen des Werkstückes und Aufstreuen von Schmirgelpulver, welches alsdann durch Schmirgelhölzer in innige Berührung mit dem Werkstück gebracht wird, besitzt ebenfalls erhebliche Nachtheile und ist ein ziemlich kostspieliges Verfahren.The emery files previously used in workshops respectively. Das an einem Ende als Heft ausgebildete Holz α besitzt eine Aussparung, in welche die Klemmbacken b und c eingebettet sind. Die untere Backe b schwingt um ein Scharnier d, während die Klemmbacke c durch einen Stift ^ zangenartig an b befestigt ist. Die Backe c ist an ihrem nach innen zu liegenden Ende mit einem durch das Holz α hindurchgehenden Druckstift g gelenkig verbunden.
