Hypotheses were elaborated on the basis of the therapeutic experience of one author (RK) as well as the clinical psychiatric and experimental empirical findings on the patient groups examined. Our approach was guided by statements found in the psy-choanalytic literature on conflicts, defense, and forms of transference associated with each group of illnesses, and on the corresponding manifestations of countertransference.
