Ausscheidung intermetallischer Phasen verringert, jedoch verschlechtert zunehmender
.Use of an austenitic hardenable steel alloy as a material for valves The austenitic chromium-nickel-silicon steels with the following compositions, previously used as valve material ) Designation ICI Mn I Si # Cr

To improve these mechanical properties and the austenite stability, these steels were alloyed with higher carbon contents (up to 1.2%) and nitrogen contents (up to 0.7%). With a suitable heat treatment with subsequent hardening, complex carbides (M23C.) And nitrides separate out, especially with steel 21 Cr-4 Ni-9 Mn-N. If steel 21 Cr-4 Ni-9 Mn-N has a low carbon and nitrogen content, if it has been in use for a long time, there is insufficient resistance to attack by lead compounds that get into the combustion gases through anti-knock agents. In recent years, this has led to the development of austenitic chromium-manganese-nickel steels with the following compositions: two characteristic steels with their high-temperature strength properties are listed in the table below: early operational stress the risk of embrittlement through precipitation of intermetallic phases such as sigma and chip phases. Increasing the carbon and nitrogen content reduces the tendency to precipitate intermetallic phases, but increasing carbon content impairs the hot formability, and increasing nitrogen content reduces weldability. The problem to be solved is to provide suitable steels for highly stressed exhaust valves which, on the one hand, meet the operational requirements for high resistance to lead, heat resistance and low tendency to embrittlement, and on the other hand avoid the manufacturing difficulties of previous steels. .
The invention is based on the new finding that it is possible in valve steels to partially replace the effects of the elements C and N by cobalt and copper. This significantly improves the hot formability and weldability. In addition, there are more favorable wear resistance and oxidation resistance. Optimal curing conditions are achieved when the ratio of cobalt to copper is chosen to be 3: 1. The resistance to attack by lead oxides is about three times greater than that of conventional chrome-nickel-silicon steels.
According to the invention as a material for valves, in particular highly stressed
Exhaust valves, austenitic age hardenable steel alloy to be used consists of
0.30 to 0.25% carbon, 1.50 to 5.00% cobalt, 23.0 to 16.0% chromium,. 0.50
up to 3.0% copper, 7.0 to 15.0% manganese, 0.25 to 0.35-1 / o nitrogen, 1.0 to 2.5
% Nickel, 0.20 to 0.40% silicon, the remainder iron with the usual impurities.
The steel to be used according to the invention is subjected to a short-term solution heat treatment
at 1150 to 1200 ° C and briefly hardened at 950 ° C. to
an embrittlement phenomenon cannot occur because of the hardening temperature
150 to 200 ° C higher than the operating temperature of the valve surfaces.
25% erhalten blieb.In-depth investigations showed that according to the invention too

1150 ° C solution annealed and hardened at 950 ° C / 1 hour, even after 300 hours
Annealing at 760 ° C, corresponding to the maximum operating temperature, no signs of embrittlement
occurred, but an elongation and constriction of 21 and 25% respectively remained.
5 0/0 und die Einschnürung von 12,6 auf 3 %.After the usual heat treatment at 1150 ° C of the known valve steels
on a chromium-manganese-nickel basis with increased carbon and nitrogen contents
the elongation decreased from 11 to after annealing at 760 ° C. for 300 hours

The newly developed material can therefore become brittle in the engine
hardly occur, and the well-known breakout at the valve edge does not occur.
