notwendige hohe Ansprechempfindlichkeit erreichen.Large area counter for measuring only from one sample
emitted soft quantum radiation When radiation protection often arises the problem
on the soft X-rays emitted by certain isotopes such as K-emitters or Pu239
to eat. For this purpose, known proportional counter tubes with a
wire-shaped electrode used. With these so far for the measurement of soft radiation
The counter tubes used were not, however, "pure" measurements possible if in addition to the
to be measured soft radiation still others, z. B. ß-radiating isotopes in the test material
are present because these two types of radiation could not be separated from each other.
Furthermore, the common proportional counter tubes could not be used here
achieve the necessary high response sensitivity.
anwesende strahlende Isotope freie Messung sicherstellt. The object of the invention is therefore to provide a measuring device for soft
To create radiation that is "pure", i. H. so of false reports by others
the presence of radiating isotopes ensures free measurement.
Damit ist also jeglicher
The invention is based on a large area counter for the exclusive
Measuring soft quantum radiation emitted from a sample, e.g. B. soft X-ray
or y radiation, whose measuring counting space is practically parallel at a predetermined distance
arranged, acting as electrodes grid or foils is limited and in which
the measuring counting space on the side facing away from the sample with one in anticoincidence
switched protective counting room is provided, the boundary grids or foils
are transparent to any radiation that occurs. This is according to the invention
also between the sample and the measuring counting room a connected in anticoincidence with the measuring counting room
Protection counting room. All beams then have to go into the actual measuring counting area
have previously crossed one of the surrounding protective counting rooms. The invention
is based on the knowledge that those generated by the soft quantum radiation
secondary beta rays in the gas only have a range of a few millimeters.
So while the ß-radiation ionizes from its origin, this happens at
the softer quantum radiation only when the X-ray or y-quantum has a photo
or the Compton effect. Since the protective counter to the measuring counter in anticoincidence
are switched (full-space anticoincidence), there will be no ß-particle that -as already
mentioned - ionized from the place of its production, counted in the meter, because either
does it stay stuck in the protection meter or it crosses protection and measuring meters
and is eliminated by anticoincidence. Such ß-particles can from the
Sample itself, from secondary effects of cosmic rays and from radioactive ones
Impurities originate from the wall material of the meter. So with that everyone is
Influence of radioactive wall contamination, not only from the material itself, but
also switched off by subsequent surface contamination. In contrast to these
unwanted ß-particles are created by the soft X-rays, which the protective counter
has passed through without absorption, in the measuring counter electrons with such a short range,
that they give up all their energy by themselves and thereby get to the counting alone.
Strahlung ausschalten.By using the known proportional counter with
Grid electrodes you get a measuring device which has the disadvantages of the known
small counter tubes with wire electrode - measuring range too small and therefore too small
Sensitivity - no longer have. Ultimately, it turns out to be an extremely
sharp measurement image, because the protective counting rooms are not fully ionizing in the measuring counting room either
Switch off radiation.
For the sake of completeness it should be mentioned that proportional counter tubes
with several grids as a so-called large area flow meter for the measurement of
cx and ß radiation are already known. Here are indeed around the counting room and
the sample is arranged around protective counting rooms switched in anticoincidence, which have a
Provide a complete shield against external interference, whereby the walls
these protective counting rooms for cc and ß radiation and thus especially for soft radiation
are made impermeable. However, in all cases it is contrary to the invention
the interfering radiation coming from the sample or the sample room is counted in the counter,
there
the sample is located directly at the measuring counting room and only on one or also
A protective counting room is arranged on both sides of this combination of sample and measuring counting room
is.
At the same time, with the arrangement according to the invention, another
very desirable effect for the spectroscopy of the soft y-radiation achieved.
In conventional counters, part of the electrons produced hit the wall of the
Meter before all the energy in the gas space has been released: This appears to occur
low-energy electrons, which lead to incorrect determinations of the energy. Located
but if there is a protective counter instead of the counter tube wall, then such "edge electrons" ionize
in both counters at the same time and get through the auto-coincidence circuit
not for counting. Only then is it possible to precisely determine the energy.
Man muß
also in diesem Fall die zu messende Substanz, z. B. Tritium, etwa in Gasform in
The execution and application possibilities of the invention are not
limited to the examples shown and described. So can the device
can also be used for non-interfering measurements of soft ß-radiation, however
only if this soft ß-radiation arises in the measuring counting room itself. One must
so in this case the substance to be measured, e.g. B. tritium, for example in gaseous form in
bring in the measuring counting room. This has not been the case with any conventional device so far
achievable great advantage that also an absorption of tritium on the meter wall
cannot affect the measurement.
A simple construction example is explained with reference to the drawing: In a pot-shaped proportional counter 1 with gas supply 11, several grids 2 to 7 lying at different potentials are arranged in a known manner in such a way that they form individual counting spaces 8, 9, 10, which are on top of each other Grid, 4, 6. Or metallic or metallized foils with a small layer thickness are separated from each other. The middle counting room 9 serves as a measuring counting room. The adjacent Zählräume 8.10 are additionally connected in anti-coincidence, so that in contrast to previous configurations; must traverse before one of the adjacent Zählräume 8.10 ß all particles entering the Meßzählraum 9 and therefore are eliminated by anti-coincidence. Low-energy 7-quanta, however, only release electrons in one of the three counting rooms due to the photo effect, which have such a short range that - apart from a very narrow boundary layer - they only have an effect in one of the three counting rooms. All y quanta absorbed in the measuring counter 9 are therefore counted as long as the electrons released by them have a range in the counting gas that is small compared to the extent of the counting space. Higher-energy y-quanta cause electrons with a greater range, which pass through several counters and are therefore also eliminated by anticoincidence.
