The invention relates to a method for producing light-diffusing coatings solid objects, in particular glasses, the scattering both by a portable The refractive index of the coating as well as a locally 5 strongly fluctuating layer thickness can be brought about.
There are already methods known in which light-scattering coverings by using pyrogenic Oxides are generated. The oxides are either during the combustion of the starting compounds firmly adhered to the heated glass or by resinous binders to the Anchored glass surface. In the former case it is difficult to find a good one, especially in the case of large areas To achieve uniformity of the coating, in the second case is the hardness and temperature resistance the layer is insufficient for some purposes. It has therefore already been proposed as To use a waterglass solution binder, however, it has been shown that such coatings in the Crack easily and tend to crumble.

insbesondere GläsernIt has now been found that light-scattering coatings of high adhesive strength and heat resistance can be obtained if pyrogenic oxides of metals or metalloids are suspended in film-forming solutions of metal or metalloid esters, the suspension is suspended by spraying or wetting, e.g. B. is reflected by immersing the objects on their surface and then converts the ester, optionally after previous hydrolysis, by heating with simultaneous expulsion of the solvent into the corresponding oxides or oxide hydrates. Film-forming ester solutions are understood to be those which have the property of forming firmly adhering, optically clear, continuous coatings on glass surfaces when they are deposited on their own in a manner known per se and thermally treated in the manner described. Particularly suitable are the compounds which are obtained from the esterification of the halides of silicon, titanium, zirconium, tin or antimony, suitable solvents being, for example, alcohols, alkyl esters or carbon tetrachloride, to which water can also be added to initiate the hydrolysis. Suitable suspended oxides are preferably Al 2 O 3 , ZnO, MgO, SiO 2 , TiO 2 , ZrO 2 or, if colorations are desired, Fe, Ni, Co or Cr oxides and mixtures of these oxides. A pile-like structure of the oxides, a method for producing light-scattering, is most favorable for incorporation into the film-forming carrier layer

Die Schüttgewichte solcher Oxyde liegen bei 100 g/l und darunter.in which they have the highest possible volume per gram (bulk volume) in the initial state, since then let them anchor themselves most firmly. Because of this, they are produced by burning Oxides produced in vapor form are particularly advantageous. The bulk weights of such Oxides are at 100 g / l and below.
A major advantage of the new method is that it allows very different Bringing scattering effects, depending on the refraction differences between the carrier substance and the built-in oxides and with what fineness the latter are dispersed. Chooses in particular an ester derived from the same metal or metalloid as the pyrogenic one If oxide is suspended, the refraction of the finished layer is almost uniform, and one results Scatter, which is based essentially only on the fine unevenness of the coating produced and therefore has high transparency, while at the same time - depending on the average layer thickness and the Pyrogenic oxide content of the coating - a more or less diffuse reflection characteristic having. The effect is then similar to that of a silk matt etching, which is known to be common in the Glazing of pictures or instruments aims, but with simpler and more reliable means too reach.
Bei geätzten Oberflächen und den nachBoth the pyrogenic oxides mentioned and the film-forming layers after their thermal transformation have much higher melting or softening points than the usual technical glasses, it is also possible to thermally bend the glasses coated according to the invention subsequently without that the coating is noticeably changed in its properties. For etched surfaces and those after
«9 757/119«9 757/119
Previously known methods produced coatings would in most cases the surface in their scattering properties changed or damaged unfavorably. There is the advantage that one also for curved glass cover plates, z. B. television screens, of large-format panels can proceed in which the application of the light-scattering coating has already been carried out and devices for depositing the coating, which are adapted to the respective shape, thus are unnecessary.
»5If you want a scattering surface with a particularly low Fresnel reflection factor, the method according to the invention can be supplemented by the following measures known per se: You can either add substances to the film-forming solutions that volatilize when heated, such as. B. ammonium chloride, camphor, urea or the like. So that the finished layer is microporous and therefore relatively low refractive index; or on such a scattering layer of higher (medium) refraction, a second, approximately λ / 4 thick, lower refractive layer, e.g. B. from SiO 2 , low, with a very small effective reflection factor can be achieved according to known interference effects. »5
With the new process, the scattering layer can also be given permanent transparent colors if you add the appropriate substances to the film-forming solutions, what after a procedures that do not belong to the state of the art can occur.
The average thickness of the coating can be up to about 50 μ, depending on the application. The minimum thickness will generally be determined by the required scattering effect and is appropriate to be determined by some preliminary tests. The maximum thickness is determined by the stability of the film-forming Limited carrier layer. In most cases, medium thicknesses of a few will work Microns best. The local thickness fluctuations caused by the unevenness of the built-in oxide particles are usually so large that there are interference phenomena between one from the outside created flat plate balance each other and therefore remain invisible. This is well known z. B. an essential condition when projecting still films.
Zur näheren Erläuterung des Verfahrens sei folgendes Beispiel angeführt:The following example is given to explain the process in more detail:
Nach kurzem Erhitzen der Platten auf 400° C ergibt sich ein fester Überzug von seidenmattartigem Aussehen, hoher Transparenz und diffusem Reflexionsvermögen, der selbst Krümmungen des Glases auf kleine Radien praktisch unverändert übersteht.150 g of o-silicic acid methyl ester (tetra-methoxydisilanol) condensed to the di-stage are mixed with 300 cm 3 of alcohol and 8 g of pyrogenic silica with a bulk density of 40 g / l are suspended in the solution by stirring. Glass plates are immersed in the solution, to which a wetting agent can also be added, and pulled out at a constant speed of about 0.5 cm / sec. After briefly heating the plates to 400 ° C., the result is a solid coating with a silk-matt appearance, high transparency and diffuse reflectivity, which even withstands curvatures of the glass on small radii practically unchanged.
Instead of glass, surfaces of ceramic materials, such as B. porcelain, enamel, or ceramic glazes and metals will.
