Zur Erzielung einer sicheren Wirkung der magnetischen Funkenlöschvorrichtung eines Schalters ist es nothwendig, dafs die Funkenlöscherspulen im Augenblick der Stromunterbrechung auch stets von genügend starkem Strom durchflossen werden. Dieser Bedingung wird bei den bekannten Constructionen, deren Funkenlöscherspulen nur an einem (isolirten) Pol angeschlossen sind, nur dann genügt, wenn der andere Pol beständig an Erde angeschlossen ist. Die Spulen müssen in diesem Falle bei Erdschlüssen im Schalter unter allen Umständen wirken. Dieses ist aber nicht mehr der Fall, wenn beide an den Schalter angeschlossenen Hauptleitungen für gewöhnlich von Erde isolirt sind, weil nunmehr bei gleichzeitigem.
