The present invention relates to the so-called biological method Purification of wastewater, especially on the so-called aerobic treatment or Treatment by supplying oxygen for the most complete possible nitrification of the original organic nitrogen.
At first the supply of oxygen from the air was attempted in such a way that the waste water was removed immediately or after anaerobic treatment (bacterial effect under exclusion of air) pass through filters made of coke, pumice stone, tuff stone and similar porous material ran, so that the wastewater in a fine distribution as intimate a mixture as possible with the in the filter pores contained air respectively. with the oxygen in the latter are subject should. It has been shown, however, that this supply of oxygen is only very seldom sufficient to bring about complete nitrification: as a rule, this contains what is drained off as "pure" Water still contains traces of organic nitrogen and measurable amounts of ammonia nitrogen. Attempts have now been made to remedy this deficiency in the filters by passing them through during irrigation specially arranged ventilation supplied air. Apart from the fact that the ventilation devices make the filter systems, which are in and of themselves expensive, quite considerably more expensive, they haven't had the expected success either.
According to the present invention, the lack of oxygen in the filter is now eliminated remedied in a much cheaper, simpler and more effective way that the filter material is mixed with mineral oxygen carriers, which are capable on the one hand Giving off oxygen easily, and in precisely the quantities required for complete oxidation of organic and ammoniacal nitrogen are required, on the other hand through Easy to saturate again with oxygen on contact with air. Since the watering time of a filter, which takes about 6 hours a day, a rest, d. i. a ventilation time of 18 hours follows, the material in question has sufficient time to view the Acquire loss of oxygen again.
The invention therefore consists in carrying out the aerobic treatment of the waste water by means of filters whose filtering substance (coke, pumice stone, tuff stone, etc.) is permeated with manganese oxides respectively. similarly behaving oxides.
Numerous experiments have shown that in this way the development of nitrification aerobic bacteria leading to the end is favored to an extent that could never be achieved by ventilation: more energetic effect with rapid progress. From this there is the considerable advantage that the filters, which, as is well known, represent the most expensive part of the system, correspond accordingly can be reduced in size.
