The invention relates to molding compositions made of polyolefins having 2 to 10 carbon atoms in the Monomer unit, in particular molding compounds made of polyethylene and polypropylene, 'of particular Stability against oxidative damage at elevated temperatures.
Polyolefins are usually used when they are processed into everyday objects, ζ. Β. at the Rolling, injection molding and extrusion, or in their use, e.g. B. as an insulating agent, increased Exposed to temperatures that can damage the polymers.
In order to protect the polyolefins from oxidation, it is known to add stabilizers to them. Such Stabilizers usually consist of amines, containing sulfur, phosphorus or hydroxyl groups Links. It is also known that in some cases by adding a stabilizer combination synergistic effects can be achieved, d. that is, it is known that in some Cases can achieve stabilization effects that are greater than the sum of the effects of the individual components. However, the occurrence of synergistic effects is not frequent and cannot be foreseen.
The known hydroxyl-containing or phenolic stabilizers include, for example the 2,4,5-trihydroxyphenones and 2,4,5-trihydroxy ketones known from US Pat. No. 2,843,563 or the 4,4'-bis (2-alkylphenols) known from Belgian patent specification 550 337. From the last mentioned patent it is also already known 4,4 '- (bis-2-alkylphenols) together with others stabilizing compounds, such as. B. with propyl gallate to use.
Known sulfur-containing stabilizers are, for. B. the dialkyl esters of 3,3'-thiodipropionic acid. From the Belgian patent 577 252 it is also known to use these dialkyl esters together with bis (alkylphenols) or reaction products of alkylphenols with ketones, such as. B. the reaction product of nonylphenol with acetone as stabilizers.
The invention accordingly relates to molding compositions made from polyolefins with 2 to 10 carbon atoms in the monomer unit and a stabilizer mixture from 0.01 to 5 percent by weight, based on the polyolefin, of a dialkyl thiodipropionate with Molding compounds made from polyolefins

Stoffatomen. Als besonders vorteilhaft hat sich Dilauryl-3,3'-thiodipropionat erwiesen.Atoms of matter. Dilauryl 3,3'-thiodipropionate has proven to be particularly advantageous.
Es kann jedoch jeder Diester der Thiodipropionsäure verwendet werden, wie beispielsweise die Butyl-, Amyl-, Hexyl-, Heptyl-, Octyl-, Nonyl-, Decyl-, Tridecyl-, Myristyl-, Pentadecyl-, Cetyl-, Heptadecyl-, Stearyl- undEicosyldiesterderS^'-Thiodipropionsäure. Auch können Mischungen derselben verwendet werden. However, any diester of thiodipropionic acid can be used, such as, for example Butyl, amyl, hexyl, heptyl, octyl, nonyl, Decyl, tridecyl, myristyl, pentadecyl, cetyl, heptadecyl, stearyl and eicosyl diesters of S ^ 'thiodipropionic acid. Mixtures of these can also be used.
Suitable trihydroxyphenones are, for example, 2,4,5-trihydroxyacetophenone, 2,4,5-trihydroxyn-butyrophenone and 2,4,5-trihydroxystearophenone. With a stabilizer combination of dialkyl thiodipropionate and a trihydroxyphenone, all normally solid polymers of olefins with 2 to 10 carbon atoms can be stabilized. In addition to polyethylene and polypropylene in particular, z. B. poly- [3-methyl-butene- (l) J, poly- [4-methyl-pentene- (l)], poly-pentene- (l), poly- [3,3'-dimethylbutene- (l)], poly - [4,4'-dimethyIbuten- (l)], poly-octene (l) and poly-decene (l) are stabilized. Both polyolefins with low density and with high density or high crystallinity can be stabilized. Polyolefins, which according to the invention can be stabilized against thermal damage, are described, for example, in US Pat. No. 2,153,553. The stabilizer combinations are particularly suitable for stabilizing solid, resinous polyolefins with average molecular weights of at least 15,000 to 20,000, although poly-α-olefin waxes with average molecular weights of only 3,000 to 12,000 can also be stabilized.
The stabilizer concentration used will normally depend on the intended use of the molding compound addicted. Concentrations from about 0.01 to 3% thiodipropionic diester and about 0.01 to 1% trihydroxyphenone has been found to be beneficial.
The stabilizer combinations used according to the invention can be used in a conventional manner, for. B. by Rolling in by means of heated rollers, by deposition from solvents or by dry Mixing into the polyolefins are introduced.
The molding compositions stabilized according to the invention are particularly resistant to the action of heat, Sunlight and UV radiation stabilized. They can be cast, extruded, rolled or made into sheets, Rods, hoses, tubes, fibers or other shaped articles are deformed. Also can for example about 0.0127 to 2.54 mm thick stabilized films can be produced. The molding compounds of the invention can also be used to cover paper, wire, metal foils, fiberglass fabrics, synthetic or natural textiles can be used.
The excellent stabilizer effect of the stabilizer combination can be seen from the following examples. The stability of the polyolefins was determined by means of an oven storage test. The polyolefin to be tested was pressed into a smooth film, from which pieces each weighing 0.25 g were cut. These pieces were then exposed to a temperature of 160 ° C. in an air circulation oven. The samples were analyzed for peroxide at certain time intervals. The specified oven storage time is the time after which peroxides had formed. To determine the peroxide, the samples were dissolved or suspended in 20 ml of carbon tetrachloride and left there for 25 minutes. Then 20 ml of a mixture consisting of 60% glacial acetic acid and 40% chloroform, and 1.0 ml of a saturated aqueous potassium iodide solution were added. After a reaction time of 2 minutes, 100 times water for dilution and a strength indicator were added. It was then titrated with a 0.002 N sodium thiosulphate solution.
The stabilizers listed in the table below were applied to granulated polypropylene from a solution. After drying, the granules were processed into foils with a thickness of about 1.587 mm by pressing. The polypropylene used had an average molecular weight of about 15,000, a density of about 0.91 and an intrinsic viscosity of about 1.25 measured in tetralin at 145 0 C. The concentrations of the additives shown in the table refer to the Polyolefingewicht.

The results obtained show those obtained with the stabilizer combinations according to the invention synergistic effect clearly. Similar synergistic effects can be achieved e.g. B. with distearyl-3,3'-thiodipropionate achieve in place of dilauryl-3,3'-thiodipropionate.
The superiority of the stabilizer combinations used according to the invention over the from the Belgian patent 577 252 known stabilizer combinations results from the in the Results of comparative tests listed below in Table B, which were carried out on the one hand with combinations, consisting of a reaction product of nonylphenol and acetone, as well as dilauryl-3,3'-thiodipropionate and on the other hand obtained with a trihydroxyphenone and dilauryl 3,3'-thiodipropionate became. This time, the stabilizers were incorporated into the polymer in a way that is even more more intimate mixing of the stabilizers with the polymer allowed.
