Process for the preparation of powder mixtures containing graphite for
Manufacture of Sintered Friction Materials The invention is concerned with training
the structure of graphite and its incorporation in sintered friction materials. Preferably
Natural graphite is used, which is known to have a lamellar structure and therefore a
has a very large active surface. During sintering, the graphite lamellae lie between
the metallic components and adversely affect the metal association. Sintered friction materials
with lamellar graphite have lower strength, show high wear, strong
Fluctuations in the coefficient of friction and lead exudation during sintering.

The weight percent of the metallic components of a sintered friction material

and the technological behavior of the friction material is significant as a result.
In general, both natural graphite and
also artificially produced graphites for use. For pricing and press technology
For reasons, however, preference is given to natural graphite. The commercially available natural graphite
(Powder graphite) are due to the necessary to achieve their purity
Processing, in very fine grain and have a very large active surface.
In the case of coarse-grained natural graphite, on the other hand, the bodies have, due to the lamellar
Structure of graphite, platelet or lens shape. But both are essential
Influence on the properties of the sintered friction material.
To achieve the dry lubrication required for friction materials
it is mainly the volume proportion of graphite that is decisive. This volume fraction
but can be up to 500% and more. If graphite is now used in powder form,
the relatively large active surface of the is affected by the fine distribution
Graphite is disadvantageous. The metallic touch and bond is consequently only
low, and the diffusion process is hindered, or there are individual metal grains
completely excluded by isolation. Such friction materials only have one
low strength. With higher lead additions, there is also a lot of exudation
of lead one. As a result, the lead content in the friction material is no longer precisely defined,
and the fluctuations in friction behavior and wear are correspondingly large.
When using coarse natural graphite in platelet or lens form (in addition to
the still relatively large surface), the less favorable grain shape has an impact.
The graphite aligns itself with the pre-pressing of the approach in the pressing plane (same friction plane)
the end. If such graphite grains or graphite nests are cut during the rubbing process,
so the hold in the metal skeleton is only slight, and the grains or platelets loosen
as a whole. A very different interaction of sliding arises
and friction and thus also a corresponding fluctuation in the friction behavior
with a faster degradation of the friction material.
diesen Metallpulvern in gleicher Größenordnung
an feinen Körnungen.
Reibwerkstoffe ergibt. It has now been shown that by changing the active surface
of graphite as well as those listed above due to the formation of a special grain shape
Disadvantages are eliminated and there are additional considerable advantages.
This is achieved by the fact that the fine-grained natural graphite is relatively soft metal powder,
such as copper, lead, tin, aluminum or the like in an amount of 5 to 450% (weight percent)
or a mixture of
these metal powders in the same order of magnitude
is added. This mixture is formed into dense compacts under high pressure,
which are then broken up again in suitable mills and to specific grain sizes
to be hereditary. To achieve certain effects, the compacts can before

a higher strength of the tablets, better grindability and less accumulation
of fine grains. First of all, the graphite and metal particles are much better
connected together, resulting in less wear and tear on the manufactured from it
Friction materials results.
The graphite prepared in this way no longer has the shape of a plate or lens,

Additions are possible if the strength is still usable. The method according to the invention
is explained using two exemplary embodiments as follows: 1. The approach consists of:
8.0 kg natural graphite powder, grain size less than 0.40 mm, 2.0 kg copper powder, grain size
smaller than 0.06 mm. These powders are mixed and pressed into a cake at 2 t / cm2
and crushed in suitable crushers and mills to a grain size of 0.2 to 0.4
mm inherited. This powder is used as an additive in friction materials.
2. Der Ansatz besteht aus zwei verschiedenen Metallpulvern:
7,0 kg Naturgraphit, Körnung kleiner als 0,20 mm, 2,7 kg Kupferpulver, Körnung
kleiner als 0,06 mm, 0,3 kg Zinnpulver, Körnung kleiner als 0,06 mm. Diese werden
gemischt.

The approach consists of two different metal powders: 7.0 kg natural graphite, grain size smaller than 0.20 mm, 2.7 kg copper powder, grain size smaller than 0.06 mm, 0.3 kg tin powder, grain size smaller than 0.06 mm. These are mixed. This mixture is compacted in steel matrices with a pressure of 2.5 t / cm2. The resulting tablets are sintered in a special furnace at a temperature of 750 ° C and a pressure of 10 kg / em2. A protective gas prevents oxidation. This is followed by breaking up, grinding and sieving to a grain size of 0.1 to 0.3 mm.
