KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
In recent years a number of nouns containing sulfur-containing dyes are known which by the action of sulfur with or without the addition of alkali or sulfur alkali on benzene and naphthalene derivatives of a certain constitution. Among the substances used for this purpose there is also nitrosophenol. However, as can be seen from the information in D. R. P. No. 90369, in reality only the reduction product of the nitrosophenol is subjected to the reaction.
A fundamentally different from this process has now been found, which makes the Taking nitrosophenol itself as the starting material. The great reactivity of nitrosophenols (Quinone monoxime) allows the introduction of sulfur into the molecule mediating To make thiosulfuric acid so that all reactions instead of melting can be carried out in aqueous solution in open vessels. The so obtained Products differ essentially in their chemical and tinctorial properties from those of the older melting process, however, like these, show the peculiarity of cotton from hot or cold baths containing alkali sulphide in extremely walk- and to color lightfast nuances.
The procedure consists in treating nitrosophenol with an aqueous solution of sodium thiosulfate and treat excess mineral acid to obtain a mixture which when heated to the boiling point with the evolution of sulphurous acid the new Dye settles as an insoluble precipitate. Its characteristics and nuance are in to a certain extent by the conditions used and the proportions between Nitrosophenol and thiosulphate, but it has been found to give the best result obtained when using one molecule of thiosulphate on one molecule of nitrosophenol will. With more nitrosophenol, the shade of black becomes more brown, with less Nitrosophenol weaker and greener.
The study of the reaction has shown that the formation of black is the origin of a colorless or slightly colored intermediate product precedes, which on further heating in acidic solution by interaction with a second which remained unaffected in the first stage of the reaction Part of the nitrosophenol gives the black. When using a larger amount of Thiosulfate, e.g. B. more than two molecules to one molecule nitrosophenol, and if avoided on heating almost all of the nitrosophenol goes into solution, and on filtration it becomes get a stable solution of the intermediate product. By heating this solution with Nitrosophenol and acid form the black dye, which in this way works in two stages can be represented. By heating the acidic solution on its own, a dye is created, its green solution in sulfide cotton turns green-gray to blue-gray. It is possible, that under certain conditions this coloring
Substance forms an admixture of black and influences its tone. Since under favorable Conditions the intermediate product is created without separation of free sulfur, this therefore it is undoubtedly a thiosulphonic acid and the conversion into the dye through development is accompanied by sulphurous acid, it seems justified to assume that the new dyes belong to the thiazine class.
Example i. 24.6 g of nitrosophenol are dissolved in 141.6 g of dilute ammonia with a volume weight of 0.98 and mixed with 76.4 cc of a sodium thiosulphate solution, which has 780 g per liter; then 600 cc of dilute sulfuric acid (1 vol. 50 4 Å> + 4 vol. water) are added in a slow stream with stirring. The more or less cloudy solution, which is colorless to carmoisine-red, is heated to the boil until the evolution of sulphurous acid is no longer noticeable. The color usually changes from red through violet to black, at the end a pale greenish solution and a black precipitate are obtained. After cooling, it is diluted, most of the acid is neutralized, and the precipitate is filtered, washed, and dried. The given ratios can be varied within certain limits.
Example 2. 95 g of nitrosophenol are dissolved in 92 cc of sodium hydroxide solution (38 0 B.) and 500 cc of water, mixed with a solution of 500 g of sodium thiosulfate in 300 cc of water and, while cooling and stirring, with a mixture of 250 g of concentrated sulfuric acid and 500 cc of water are added, the temperature not more than 22 0 C. DAF increases. After a few minutes the filtered solution is mixed with a solution of 57 g. Nitrosophenol in 60 cc of sodium hydroxide solution (38 0 B.) and 450 cc water 'was added and a mixture of 840 g concentrated sulfuric acid and 660 cc of water is heated after the addition of 4 hours to a water bath and boiled for 2 hours. The evaporating water is replaced. The precipitate is filtered off, washed and dried. The new dye shows the following reactions. It dissolves easily in caustic or carbonic acid alkalis, as well as in sodium sulfide to a coal-black solution. With neutral, sulphurous soda, he gives a violet-black solution, which turns brown on acidification. Insoluble in aqueous hydrochloric acid, it dissolves easily in concentrated sulfuric acid of blue color. Cotton is extracted from the alkaline sulphide bath with 10 pCt. The dye is deeply colored and pure black. Post-treating with copper sulfate or bichromate will deepen the color a little, but not change much. The dyeings obtained are completely resistant to acids, alkali and soap.
