Description
Formable material using diatomaceous earth Invention relates to a material that can be used to create fine and detailed fittings and impressions is formed or can be formed into such. He is by it characterized in that the serving as an essential and predominant component Kieselguhr still has an ignition residue of more than 60/0 after firing, preferably more than 8%. having. The material is still extremely light. His Surface can be processed in the most varied and finest ways. Its production costs are very low per unit volume. By its little specific Weight it is very extensive, making even large fittings cheap and lighter Execution can be made. Its cohesion is good, its fragility very low. For special purposes it can even be made elastic and therefore fragile Give properties.
It is already known for the production of heat-insulating moldings To use a casting compound, which predominantly consists of a common diatomaceous earth, from asbestos fibers as well as glue as a binding agent. For the same purpose, the Use of cellulose fibers, e.g. B. raw paper pulp, as an additive to a plaster of paris existing mass known. When using common diatomaceous earth, the the advantageous properties described above, in particular the fine workability, the ability to produce finely detailed prints.
Areas of application are the manufacture of handicrafts Objects such as sculptures, reliefs, plaques, brooches, artistic containers and cans. Another area of application is the production of heads and busts and whole figures with a smooth surface that can be reworked. z. B. Mannequins. A third major application is the production of stable, little or hardly breakable toys. Further applications concern mirror frames, technical containers, form-fitting casings, encapsulation or capping of other material, e.g. B. sheet metal, existing objects, shapes and intermediate shapes for the foundry.
According to the invention, a diatomaceous earth is used, the one remaining Loss on ignition in the dry or in the fresh state after firing of more than 6%, expediently even more than 8%. At the same time or instead the kieselguhr can, since the starting material and the origin are quite different can also be defined by the fact that the remaining original fat content, so-called diatomaceous fat, about 1.51 / o and more, if possible even 2% and more. Such a kieselguhr has compared to the usual Gures with regard to formability, especially with regard to the relatively small quantities required, a great deal more expensive excipients have completely new and improved properties.
Said diatomaceous earth is now processed into a material, whereby they are 75 per cent and more, possibly more than 83 per cent, of the volume of the total dry matter matters. Even with such a high proportion of kieselguhr according to the invention usable materials can be easily produced. The material continues to show a binder and a further, expediently having fiber structure Auxiliary on. Alkylated celluloses (cellulose ethers) are used as binders aqueous solution or emulsion or polymerized vinyl ester, preferably in an aqueous emulsion or dispersion, e.g. B. polyvinyl acetate, particularly suitable namely to 16% and preferably less of the total weight. Also glue and paste can be used if necessary. If you use binders, such as the said polyvinyl acetate, are used, which result in a somewhat elastic or tough end product, whereby the Material is given fracture and splinter resistance, one has the further advantage that the amount of the adjuvant can be limited or, under certain circumstances, even entirely can omit.
The addition of binder is expediently below 12% for polyvinyl and poly-butadiene or isoprene binders and below 7.5% for methyl cellulose and related binder limited. It can also contain a so-called plasticizer, Tricresol phosphate or dibutyl phthalate, optionally 40 to 60% Proportion can be added.
In addition to the binder, a further auxiliary, namely one with a fiber structure, is expediently used. Paper pulp, wood pulp, spun and shredded cellulose, etc. are suitable for this purpose, but above all, because of its cheapness, a second-processed paper pulp, which is obtained by dissolving and crushing used paper. In cooperation with the abovementioned binders, only a short fiber length is necessary and even entirely desirable from the point of view of the present invention. In a further improvement, the fibers are completely or largely dissolved into fine fibrils by treating the fiber mass extensively in pan mills, squeezing it in rolling mills until the desired split is achieved, or chemically dissolving the fibers. By dissolving into fibrils, the ability to bind and hold the kieselguhr is greatly improved as a result of the enormous enlargement of the adhesive surfaces, the binders mentioned giving the fibrils sufficient strength despite their fineness. In cooperation with the binders mentioned, it is possible to reduce the fiber content to 15 to 250 / e, preferably to only 10 to 200%, of the total dry weight, despite the remaining good effect of the same.
Regardless of the agents emulsifying the binder, it is recommended another addition of wetting agents. about fatty alcohol sulfonates, naphthyl sulfonic acids etc. For better workability it is advisable to use a lubricant such as linseed oil, Castor oil, but also other film-forming oils and fats, such as even high-quality motor oil or so-called top lubricating oil, about 0.3 to 1.5% of the total weight. The lubricants are in this case already mixed with water, if necessary entered emulsified state with the addition of stabilizers.
In order to obtain a diatomaceous earth with the properties mentioned, the Raw silica burned at correspondingly low temperatures. Instead of in calcination furnaces it is advisable to carry out the firing in piles. Farther the burning time is measured accordingly, as well as, of course, the diversity the starting material, the proportion and type of admixtures must be taken into account have to. However, a ready-made kieselguhr with the properties mentioned can be used without any problems obtain. It is noteworthy that these decisive properties have so far been the case were ignored and even would not be desirable for many purposes. Usual Diatomaceous earth, unless used as an additive for inferior purposes Insulation masses that are too coarse are burned up and therefore show residual glow losses on the order of only 3.40 / 0 or even 0.310 / 0 and diatomaceous fat only still in traces.
For the purposes of the invention, the diatomaceous fat can even be used without a burning process be saponified in the aqueous process by means of alkalis, on or instead of it The raw silica is pickled by the action of acid, then it becomes one strong oxidation, for example using nitric acid, chlorinated lime or hydrogen peroxide, subject. Otherwise it is cleaned, sieved, optionally ground, but the latter is not taken too far.
When processing the mixed raw materials, it is expedient worked in weakly alkaline solution.
The material according to the present invention has the further advantage that the entire manufacturing and processing process is cold can be done without any heating. The drying and solidification can can of course be accelerated by heating. The ingredients will expediently by means of a stirrer: or mixing machine in the usual way without pressure mixed. However, in further improvement of the manufacturing process will be subsequently to this mixture or even from the outset already the ingredients under strong Pressure brought into connection with one another and further mixed. this happens z. B. by pressing out of a pressure cylinder or by means of a rotating screw, to which the starting materials are fed continuously and in a mixture. That It is pressed out through a strong sieve plate with appropriately sized openings.
