Hexitester
mit kondensierten aromatischen Säureresten
mit der Formel (I)
Description
The Invention relates to specific chiral compounds with very good solubility in usual nematic liquid crystal base mixtures and particularly good phase stability the cholesteric mixtures at low temperatures.
They induce as constituents (dopants) liquid-crystalline functional layers helical (cholesteric or smectic) structures in these layers and control both the intensity as well as the color of continuous or reflected light in displays.

den genannten Zweck einsetzbar sind. 1988 erschien eine Publikation
von V. Vill et al. in Z. Naturforsch. 43a, 1119-1125, worin erstmalig

- - possess the highest possible helical twisting power (HTP),
- Have a good solubility in the nematic liquid crystal base mixture used in order to achieve the highest possible selective reflection in the visible wavelength range,
- Have good phase stability at low temperatures to avoid irreversible texture disturbance by crystallization, and
- - show only a slight temperature dependence of the selective reflection.
Bisher ist kein Dotierstoff bekannt, der alle vorgenannten Eigenschaften gleichzeitig in befriedigendem Maße aufweist. So far is no dopant known, all the aforementioned properties at the same time to a satisfactory extent.
Aufgabe
Preferably are M and M 'respectively a substituted or unsubstituted naphthyl group.
All particularly preferred are M and M 'each one in 6 position substituted naphthyl groups whose acid function (-COO-) is in 2 position. And here again very particularly preferred are alkoxy-substituted naphthyl groups.
Die am meisten bevorzugte Verbindung ist 1.4;3.6-Dianhydro-D-sorbit-2.5-di(6-n-hexyloxy-2-naphthoesäure)ester.The most preferred compound is 1.4; 3.6-dianhydro-D-sorbitol-2,5-di (6-n-hexyloxy-2-naphthoic acid) ester.
Of the Dopant according to the invention can in usual solved nematic base mixtures be used. Cheap Concentrations for this are about 5 to 6 mass%, especially for the visible range. It can but also mixtures with smaller concentrations of dopant (e.g., below 5% by mass for the IR range) or with larger concentrations to dopant (e.g. 6% by mass for the UV range) are produced.
Nachstehend soll die Erfindung anhand von Beispielen näher erläutert werden.below the invention will be explained in more detail by way of examples.

After standing overnight is poured into ice-water and acidified with dilute HCl. The precipitated crude product is filtered off with suction, washed neutral with water and dried. Recrystallization three times with acetonitrile provides 7g of the target product of melting point 114-115 ° C (polymorphic).
Vergleichsbeispiele 1 bis 6Comparative Examples 1 until 6
Die Herstellung von 1.4;3.6-Dianhydro-D-sorbit-2.5-diestern wurde wiederholt, wobei anstelle von 6-n-Hexyloxy-2-naphthoesäure 4-n-Hexyloxybenzoesäure (VgB1), Zimtsäure (VgB2), 4-(4-Fluorbenzoyloxy)-benzoesäure (VgB3), 4-(4-n-Hexylbenzoyloxy)-benzoesäure (VgB4), 4-(4-n-Octylbenzoyloxy)-benzoesäure (VgB5) bzw. 4-trans-Cyclohexyl-benzoesäure (VgB6) eingesetzt wurden.The Preparation of 1.4; 3.6-dianhydro-D-sorbitol-2,5-diesters was repeated, wherein instead of 6-n-hexyloxy-2-naphthoic acid 4-n-hexyloxybenzoic acid (VgB1), cinnamic acid (VgB2), 4- (4-fluorobenzoyloxy) benzoic acid (VgB3), 4- (4-n-hexylbenzoyloxy) benzoic acid (VgB4), 4- (4-n-octylbenzoyloxy) benzoic acid (VgB5) or 4-trans-cyclohexyl-benzoic acid (VgB6) were used.
The melting temperatures and the HTP values of the products from Example 1 and Comparative Examples 1 to 6 can be found in Table 1 below. The dopant B1 has the largest HTP value, even exceeding that of VgB1 and VgB6.
Beispiel 2Example 2
L-101 (MLS GmbH/Leuna), E7 (BDH Ltd., Poole), MDA-00-1795, MLC-6657-000,
herstellen lassen, siehe Tabelle 2. Andere bekannte Dotierstoffe,
wie z.B. ZLI 4571 (Merck/Darmstadt), (S)-(+)-1-(9-Anthryl)-2,2,2-trifluorethanol
(Aldrich) oder (4R,5R)-2,2-Dimethyl-α,α,α',α'-tetrakis(3,5-dimethylphenyl)-1,3-dioxolan-4,5-dimethanol

Beispiel 3Example 3
- - 5.95% by mass B1: No texture disturbance after 4 months of storage.
- - 5.20 mass% VgB1: onset of crystallization after 18 hours and complete disruption after one week's storage.
Beispiel 4Example 4
Of the Comparison of the temperature dependence the selective reflection of mixtures of B1 or VgB1 in MDA-00-1795 gave the values shown in Table 3. Again, B1 cuts Much better in comparison with VgB1, as it is a clear lower temperature dependence has.

Beispiel 5Example 5
The comparative investigation of the UV stability of cholesteric layers with the composition given in Tab. 3 when irradiated with a 300 W light source (Ultra-Vitalux / Osram, distance between light source thin-film cell 400 mm) gave the following redshifts: dλ / dt = + 0.007 nm / Min for B1 and dλ / dt = + 0.030 nm / min for VgB1. Accordingly, the B1-containing mixture has a significantly higher UV stability, ie a lower red shift.
Beispiel 6Example 6
- T0
- = Klärtemperatur der Basismischung,
- TD
- = Klärtemperatur der dotierten Mischung,
- c
- = Dotierstoffkonzentration.
- T 0
- = Clearing temperature of the base mixture,
- T D
- = Clearing temperature of the doped mixture,
- c
- = Dopant concentration.
Ergebnis (Basismischung MDA-00-1795):Result (base mix MDA-00-1795):
- ΔTV (B1) = 1,01°C ΔT V (B1) = 1.01 ° C
- ΔTV (VgB1) = 2,31°C,ΔT V (VgB1) = 2.31 ° C,
