Abstract

The lighting unit (1) has a main body (2) incorporating a lamp socket (8) for a high pressure gas discharge lamp, e.g. a metal halogen lamp or a sodium lamp, enclosed by a lamp shade (7), which can be secured to the surface of a ceiling and which is coupled to an electrical supply unit (6) via a 3-wire ignition cable (5) with a length of several metres and an electrical capacitance of less than 80 pF/m, for handling ignition voltages up to 5 kV.
