Abstract
In a process to improve the methane gas yield from a sub-soil waste (11) disposal site, one or more sub-surface vertical suction shafts (20) are incorporate up to four horizontal suction slits (21). Each slit is separated from the next by a vertical interval. The gas is abstracted from through the shaft under suction pressure between 20 mbar and 300 mbar at a rate not exceeding 300 m(/hr. The vertical interval between the slits is not less than 1 m. The uppermost slit is 10 m below ground surface level (12). The lowest gas abstraction slit is 3-5 metres of the underlying seal between the refuse and underlying strata. The gas is abstracted through a depth-adjustable tubular insert (19) that may cover or open the slits as required. Also claimed is a commensurate assembly. The tubular insert leaves an annular gap to the shaft lining. The annular gap is alternately filled with gravel and gas-impermeable material. The gravel bed is located in line with the slits. The gas-impermeable material is located between the slits.
