Infolge dieser Bewegung der beiden Ränder des Schutzgehäuses wird von den damit verbundenen Kraftübertragungselementen eine Kraft in die Aufreißnaht des Bezugs eingeleitet. Wenn diese Kraft eine bestimmte Größe erreicht, dann wird die Aufreißnaht zerstört, so dass der Luftsack in der erforderlichen Weise seitlich aus der Sitzlehne austreten kann. Da die Kraft von den Kraftübertragungselementen unmittelbar in den oder die die Aufreißnaht bildenden Fäden eingeleitet wird, ist die Zerstörung der Aufreißnaht vom Material des Bezugs unabhängig. Die Auswahl des Materials für den Bezug ist daher hinsichtlich der Funktionsfähigkeit des Seitenairbags keinerlei Beschränkungen unterworfen. Die Unabhängigkeit vom Material des Bezugs bedeutet auch Kostenvorteile durch Reduzierung des Versuchsaufwands während der Entwicklung und der Serienüberwachung.
