HINTERGRUND DER ERFINDUNGBACKGROUND THE INVENTION
Ebbesen et al. (Ebbesen I), "Large-Scale Synthesis Of Carbon Nanotubes," Nature, Vol 358, p. 220 (16. Juli 1992) und Ebbesen et al., (Ebbesen II), "Carbon Nanotubes," Annual Review of Materials Science, Vol. 24, p. 235 (1994). Ebbesen II; Iijima et al., "Helical Microtubules Of Graphitic Carbon," Nature, Vol. 354, p. 56 (7. November 1991).Fullerenes are molecules in the form of closed cages, which consist entirely of sp 2 -hybridized carbons, which are arranged in hexagons and pentagons. Fullerenes (eg C 60 ) were first identified as closed spherical cages, which were generated from evaporated carbon by condensation. Fullerene tubes are produced in carbon deposits on the cathode using carbon arc processes to produce spherical fullerenes from evaporated carbon. Ebbesen et al. (Ebbesen I), "Large-Scale Synthesis Of Carbon Nanotubes," Nature, Vol 358, p. 220 (July 16, 1992) and Ebbesen et al., (Ebbesen II), "Carbon Nanotubes," Annual Review of Materials Science, Vol. 24, p. 235 (1994). Such tubes are referred to herein as carbon nanotubes. Many of the carbon nanotubes produced by these processes were multi-wall nanotubes, ie the carbon nanotubes resembled concentric cylinders. Carbon nanotubes with up to seven walls have been described in the prior art. Ebbesen II; Iijima et al., "Helical Microtubules Of Graphitic Carbon," Nature, Vol. 354, p. 56 (November 7, 1991).
There has been a lot since 1991 Interest in the derivatization of carbon nanotubes, and especially objectionable carbon nanotubes to their handling to simplify the solubility of such nanotubes to increase and around the nanotubes more accessible to the formation of networks close. This is because single-wall carbon nanotubes are one of the more impressive discoveries in chemistry and of materials in recent years. Have nanotubes an enormous strength, an extreme length-width ratio and are excellent thermal and electrical conductors. An abundance of possible Applications for nanotubes was suspected and there will be some progress towards that made for commercial applications. Accordingly, for some Applications include chemical modification of single-wall carbon nanotubes as well of multi-wall carbon nanotubes required his. For example such applications require grafting components onto the nanotubes, to add modified nanotubes like objectionable carbon nanotubes on surfaces for applications to allow in electronics; a reaction with host matrices to allow in composite materials; and the presence of a Variety of functional groups attached to the nanotubes such as single-wall carbon nanotubes are for Allow sensor applications.
While there are many reports and reviews on the Manufacturing and the physical properties of carbon nanotubes, popped up reports of a chemical influence on nanotubes slowly. There was report about functionalizing nanotube ends with carboxyl groups (Rao, et al., Chem. Commun., 1996, 1525-1526; Wong, et al., Nature, 1998, 394: 52-55), and then over another influencing to them via thiol bonds to gold particles to bind (Liu, et al., Science, 1998, 280: 1253-1256). Haddon and coworkers (Chen, et al., Science, 1998, 282: 95-98) have reported solvation of single-wall carbon nanotubes attachment of octadecylamine groups to the ends of the tubes and then attach Dichlorocarbenes on the nanotube side wall, albeit in relatively low amounts (approximately 2%).
Aihara, J., J. Phys. Chem. 1994, 98, 9773–9776. Chen, Y. et al., J. Mater Res. 1998, 13, 2423–2431.Success in covalent sidewall derivatization of single-wall carbon nanotubes has been limited, and the reactivity of the sidewalls has been compared to the reactivity of the graphite base. Aihara, J., J. Phys. Chem. 1994, 98, 9773-9776. A viable route to direct sidewall functionalization of single-wall carbon nanotubes has been fluorination at elevated temperatures, a process that was disclosed in a copending application, commonly assigned to the assignee, of the United States patent application current No. 09/810 390 "Chemical Derivatization Of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes To Facilitate Solvation Thereof; And Use Of Derivatized Nanotubes To Form Catalyst-Containing Seed Materials For Use in Making Carbon Fibers," by Margraves et al March 2001. These functionalized nanotubes can either be defluorinated by treatment with hydrazine or reacted with strong nucleophiles such as alkyl lithium reagents become. Although fluorinated nanotubes may provide access to a variety of functionalized materials, the two-step protocol and functional group incompatibility with organolithium compounds can render such processes incompatible with certain end uses of the carbon nanotubes. Other sidewall modification attempts have been disturbed by the presence of significant graphitic or amorphous carbon contaminants.
It would therefore be desirable to have a direct one Path to high levels of functionalization of nanotubes that is adaptable (i.e. a one-step process and one that works with certain end uses of the nanotubes is compatible) to develop. Such uses include applications to use the enormous strength, the extreme length-width ratios and the excellent thermal and electrical conductivity properties of the nanotubes.
Accordingly, it is a job of this invention, a method for derivatizing carbon nanotubes, especially the side walls and end closings of objectionable carbon nanotubes, using chemistry that is direct, adaptable and compatible with the end uses and uses of the nanotubes is to provide.
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG DER ERFINDUNGSUMMARY THE INVENTION
The invention relates to new methods for the chemical modification of carbon nanotubes. such Methods involve the derivatization of multi-wall and single-wall carbon nanotubes, including single-wall carbon nanotubes small diameter (approx. 0.7 nm), with diazonium species. The procedure allows chemical attachment of a variety of organic compounds on the side and ends of carbon nanotubes. This chemically modified nanotubes have applications in polymer composite materials, molecular electronics Applications and sensor devices. On derivatization procedures belong electrochemically initiated reactions, thermally initiated Reactions (via in-situ generation of diazonium compounds or in advance prepared diazonium compounds) and photochemically initiated Reactions. The derivatization causes significant changes the spectroscopic properties of the nanotubes. The estimated degree of functionality is approx. 1 from 20 to 30 carbons each in a nanotube, which is a functional unit wearing.
To the electrochemically initiated Procedures include Procedures involving an array of nanotubes such as a piece of "bucky paper" or a mat use that with a crocodile clip, with a Silver paste is covered, held and placed in an acetonitrile solution Diazoniumsalzes and an auxiliary electrolyte salt are immersed can while a voltage (typically a negative voltage) on the array of nanotubes is created. By means of such a procedure, a molecular Wire (like an oligo (phenylene-ethynylene) molecular wire) and also a molecular electronic device covalently attached to a nanotube. This represents the marriage of wire-like nanotubes molecular wires and with molecular electronic devices.
Such electrochemical processes can be adapted to focus on site-specific chemical functionalization of nanotubes to be applied. About that it also allows the controlled attachment of two or more different chemical functionalities in different places the nanotubes.
On the thermally initiated processes belong Procedures in which a dispersion of carbon nanotubes in an organic solvent mixture with a precursor a reactive diazonium species is treated. This precursor will then converted in-situ to the reactive species, and their thermal Decomposition leads for chemical attachment to the carbon nanotubes. It is believed that such a process has the advantage of being to scale Adaptability and the need for potentially unstable diazonium compounds, i.e. isolate the species that reacts with the carbon nanotube and store, avoid.
They also include Thermally initiated processes also include procedures that are pre-manufactured Use diazonium species. The reactive species can be prepared in advance, isolated and added to the mixture. To additional ones Variations belong Variations in the temperature of the process (ambient temperature and higher and lower temperatures), the ratio of the reactants, and a variety of organic solvents.
The photochemically initiated process are similar the thermally initiated reaction with the exception that a photochemical process (not a thermal process) used will help the decomposition of the diazonium species leading to chemical attachment of the structural units on the carbon nanotubes.
If modified with suitable chemical groups, the nanotubes are chemically compatible with a polymer matrix, which allows the properties of the nanotubes (such as mechanical strength) to be transferred to the properties of the composite material as a whole. To achieve this, you can the modified carbon nanotubes are carefully mixed (physically mixed) with the polymeric material and / or, if desired, are allowed to react at ambient temperature or elevated temperature. These methods can be used to attach functionalities to the nanotubes that continue to covalently bind to the host polymer matrix or to bind directly between two tubes themselves.
There are a number of variations in the chemical structure of the polymer matrix, i.e. polyethylene, various epoxy resins, polypropylene, polycarbonate, etc. in general could possible Composite materials with chemically modified nanotubes and Thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers and other manufactured become. There is also a myriad of chemical variations Groups working on the nanotubes can be attached possible. The special group is selected to be tolerability with the particular one you want Increase polymer matrix and if desired to cause a chemical bond to the host material.
In addition, the nanotubes, if modified with suitable chemical groups, as Producers of polymer growth can be used. That is, the nanotubes would with a functional group that is an active part of a polymerization process could be, be derivatized, which also results in a composite material on which the carbon nanotubes would be involved chemically.

Elektrochemische Derivatisierung von Kohlenstoff-Nanoröhrchen mit Diazonium-Spezieselectrochemical Derivatization of carbon nanotubes with diazonium species
Von Aryl-diazonium-Salzen ist bekannt, dass sie mit Elektronenmangel-Olefinen reagieren, was als die Meerwein-Reaktion bekannt ist. Obushak, M.D., et al., Tett. Lett. 1998, 39, 9567–9570.
Phys. Lett. 2000, 77, 1224–1226), wurde an den Nanoröhrchen befestigt.A method of making small diameter (about 0.7 nm) single wall carbon nanotubes was developed by Smalley, et al., Nikolaev, P., et al., Chem. Phys. Lett. 1999, 313, 91-97. This process is disclosed in a co-pending application, commonly assigned to the assignee of the application, U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 09/830,642 "Gas-Phase Nucleation and Growth of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes from High Pressure CO , "by Smalley et al., filed April 27, 2001, which is incorporated herein by reference. This material is now commercially available (Carbon Nanotechnologies Inc., Material HiPco). Since the diameter of these nanotubes is approximately the same as that of C 60 , it should be understood that these nanotubes show increased reactivity relative to the larger diameter tubes typically produced by laser furnace processes, since the reactivity of C 60 is partial the bending stress was attributed. While the present invention is also suitable for multi-wall carbon nanotubes and larger diameter single-wall carbon nanotubes, the examples illustrating the present method have primarily used small diameter nanotubes. A variety of diazonium salts have been used, including those that provide building blocks that, upon binding to the nanotubes, lead to further development. Also, an oligo (phenylene-ethynylene) molecular device similar to that which has been shown to have memory and negative resistance at room temperature (Chen, J. et al., App. Phys. Lett. 2000, 77, 1224- 1226), was attached to the nanotubes.
The following examples as well the other examples described herein are presented to illustrate the The invention is further illustrated and is not to be considered the scope inappropriately limiting this invention.
A. Beispiele Nr. 1–11A. Examples Nos. 1-11
For the electrochemical derivatization experiments, a piece of bucky paper made by filtering a suspension was used as the working electrode in a three-electrode cell and immersed in an acetonitrite solution containing the diazonium salt and an electrolyte. The diazonium salts were probably reduced to aryl radicals on the surface of the bucky paper and were subsequently covalently bound to the nanotubes. The conductivity of single-wall carbon nanotubes became good documented. In general, aryl diazonium salts are easily prepared under conditions that tolerate a variety of functional groups. Thus, the method described herein allows the functionalization of nanotubes with a wide variety of diazonium salts, including those that provide a chemical handle for further development after binding to nanotubes.

Bucky PaperBucky paper
(Anmerkung des Übersetzers: "Bucky Paper" sind freitragende Filme aus zusammengelagerten Nanoröhrchen.)The use of Bucky Paper as a working electrode for derivatization poses several unusual problems. The electric one Contact between the source and the Bucky Paper during electrochemical Procedure is a problem. This situation can be brought up a paste of colloidal silver to hold the bucky Papers used alligator clip can be improved. You go too assume that the success of the response is at least partially dependent on of quality of the bucky paper used as the working electrode. Accordingly it was helpful to get a suspension before the filtration little or no visible particulate material for making the bucky paper contained. Allgemeines Verfahren zur Diazotierung von Anilin-DerivatenGeneral procedure for the diazotization of aniline derivatives
A lot of nirosonium tetrafluoroborate (1.2 mole equivalents) was weighed in a glove box and sealed. Allgemeines Verfahren zur elektrochemischen Derivatisierung von SWNT-pGeneral procedure for the electrochemical derivatization of SWNT-p
The device used for the electrochemical derivatization experiments was a 3-electrode cell with an Ag / AgNO 3 reference electrode and a platinum wire counter electrode. A piece of bucky paper (1-2 mg) served as the working electrode. The bucky paper was produced by filtering a 1,2-dichlorobenzene suspension over a 0.2 μm PTFE membrane (47 mm, Sartorius). After drying under vacuum, the paper was peeled from the membrane and a piece was separated for use in derivatization. The bucky paper was held with an alligator clip previously treated with a colloidal silver paste (Ted Pella, Inc.) and placed in an acetonitrile solution of the diazonium salt (0.5 mM for SWNT-1 to SWNT- 7 and SWNT-9; 0.01 M for SWNT-8) and tetra-n-butylammonium tetrafluoroborate (0.05 M). Care was taken not to immerse the alligator clip itself. A potential of –1.0 V was applied for a period of 30 min. Care was taken to exclude light and nitrogen was bubbled through the solution during the experiment. After the reaction, the part of the bucky paper that was not immersed in the solution was separated, and the rest was soaked in acetonitrile for 24 hours, then washed with acetonitrile, chloroform and ethanol. After drying, this material was sonicated in acetonitrile for 20 minutes, filtered and washed again with acetonitrile, 2-propanol and chloroform. The reaction products were dried under vacuum at room temperature before characterization. Control experiments without a diazonium salt confirm that such conditions do not affect the nanotubes, as verified by UV / vis / NIR, Raman and TGA.

The solubility of single-wall carbon nanotubes is of considerable interest to those skilled in the art. The three solvents that are most useful for the small diameter underivatized nanotubes are dimethylformamide, chloroform, and 1,2-dichlorobenzene. SWNT-4 was the only material that was found to offer significantly improved solubility in organic solvents. SWNT-4 was even found to be somewhat soluble in tetrahydrofuran (THF) as opposed to a complete lack of solubility for SWNT-p in this solvent. After sonication for about 30 min, it was found that the THF solution contained about 50 mg L -1 SWNT-4 with no visible particulate matter. Some visible particulate matter was present after 36 h, but the solvent was still almost black. This dark color was maintained for at least several weeks. The solubility in dimethylformamide, chloroform and 1,2-dichlorobenzene was also improved, with suspensions being formed much faster than in the case of SWNT-p and higher concentrations were achievable. It is believed that this solubility improvement is likely due to the blocking effect of the bulky tert-butyl group, which could prevent the close contact required to "roping" the nanotubes.
Beim Suspendieren von SWNT-9 in Dimethylformamid stieß man auf beträchtliche Schwierigkeiten.SWNT-5 and SWNT-8 were found that they're more soluble in dimethylformamide were, but the solubility in other solvents (Tetrahydrofuran, toluene, 2-propanol, carbon disulfide) was not improved. SWNT-9 was manufactured in an effort to improve solubility in water and other hydrogen bonding solvents to effect. However, this functionalization had quite the opposite Result. SWNT-9 was not dispersible in water or water / 0.2% Triton X. When suspending SWNT-9 in dimethylformamide, one came across considerable Trouble.
In an effort to be resilient to investigate the functionalization and a simple intercalation or exclude adsorption, SWNT-1 has been subjected to a variety of conditions. This material was at both ambient temperature and 45 ° C for 10 min in chloroform as well as in 1,2-dichlorobenzene, sonicated, filtered and examined again spectroscopically. There were no distinguishable ones changes observed. additionally was sonicated in 1,2-dichlorobenzene for 10 min to remove the tube to disperse, then stirred at 75 ° C for 3 h. After filtering and washing no spectroscopic changes were observed.
Der Fluor-Gehalt war 3,6 Atom-%, verglichen mit 3,5 Atom-% (siehe oben), und daher innerhalb der Messgrenzen.SWNT-3 has been added Sonication in acetonitrile, followed by filtering and washing, examined again using EMPA. The fluorine content was 3.6 atom%, compared to 3.5 atomic% (see above), and therefore within the Measuring limits.

This is one of the main advantages of Using an electrochemical process as opposed to one Process in solution phase, in which the reduction of the diazonium salt by copper or some other Metal is catalyzed. Because the nanotubes in solution in quite a low concentration would be present would the aryl radicals are likely from some other species deleted become. A dimerization of nanotubes is in the present Case also unlikely due to lack of mobility in the solid state.
Thermische Derivatisierung von Kohlenstoff-Nanoröhrchen mit Diazonium-SpeziesThermal derivatization of carbon nanotubes with diazonium species
The derivatization with aryl diazonium species is not limited to the electrochemically induced reaction. The is called, using both direct treatment of objectionable carbon nanotubes Aryl diazonium tetrafluoroborate salts in solution as well as in situ generation of diazonium with alkyl nitrite are effective means of functionalization. In situ generation of the diazonium species has advantages in that this procedure may avoid the need isolate unstable or photosensitive aryldiazonium species and store. The while the temperature used in the thermal reaction would be at most about 200 ° C and typically at the most about 60 ° C. In some cases it is observed that the direct treatment with previously prepared Diazonium salts at moderate temperature or even room temperature is effective, and is expected to Reactions observed at temperatures below room temperature could become.

B. CharakterisierungB. Characterization
Relative to the tangential vibration at approximately 1590 cm -1 , the intensity of the radial breathing vibration (approximately 250 cm -1 ) is reduced and the intensity of the disturbance vibration (1290 cm -1 ) is significantly increased. The increase in the relative intensity of the perturbation vibration can be attributed to an increased number of sp 3 -hybridized carbons in the nanotube framework and can be taken as a rough measure of the degree of functionalization. In addition, as previously discussed, the functionalized phenyl groups attached to the nanotubes can be removed by heating in an argon atmosphere, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) thus provides a quantitative determination of the degree of functionalization. When heated from 16 to 19 to 600 ° C in an argon atmosphere, the observed weight loss values were as follows, with the value previously reported for the same materials made by the electrochemical technique in parentheses: 16: 26% (30%) , 17: 25% (27%), 18: 26% (31%), 19: 23% (26%) 21 (not manufactured using the electrochemical technique). Material 20 showed no similar changes in the spectroscopic properties or a significant loss of mass in the TGA, although this group can be successfully attached by means of the electrochemical technique. The ester-bearing material 18 has been successfully produced, which in principle gives access to the carboxylic acid group via hydrolysis.
It is of primary interest, the level of functionalization, which can be achieved with the thermal process, with which with obtained the electrochemical processes of the present invention was to compare. Experiments Nos. 13 to 18 were carried out with a large surplus of aniline derivative carried out, i.e. sufficient to provide the diazonium species in quantities, that of the amount of diazonium tetrafluoroborate salts used in the previous discussed reported electrochemical examples used were equivalent were. Therefore, these examples Nos. 13 to 18 in this regard comparable.
For Material 16 is a direct comparison through electron microprobe analysis available. This analysis showed a value of 2.2 atomic% chlorine, in relation to 97 atomic% carbon. With something similar Material produced by electrochemical technology the analysis that there is 2.7 atomic percent chlorine, relative to 96 atomic percent carbon had (see above).
The TGA data also give one additional Insight into the relative effectiveness of the thermal process. For example, the mass loss for 19 corresponds to a determination of one functionalized carbon among 37 carbons in the nanotubes versus the ratio obtained by the electrochemical process 1 under 34. It is assumed that the thermal technology then in its effectiveness for the equivalent Material (SWNT-5) comparable to the electrochemical process is. It is believed that optimizing the conditions is one higher Level of functionalization. The observed effectiveness is sufficient to make the properties of the single-wall carbon nanotubes significant to change, and will probably be for numerous applications such as cross-linked materials and composite material production, as discussed below, be satisfactory.
It was found that the thermal Response of the present invention is almost as effective like the electrochemical method of the present invention, though in a sense this thermal reaction is easier to carry out and for scale adjustment is more usable.
It is found again that also using the chemical derivatization of nanotubes prefabricated diazonium species can be successfully carried out can. The diazonium species can be pre-made, isolated and be added to the mixture. The derivatization can then be thermally induced become. additional Variations include variations in the temperature of the process (Ambient temperature and higher and lower temperatures), the ratio of the reactants and a Variety of organic solvents.

Kontrollierte ortsspezifische Funktionalisierung von Kohlenstoff-Nanoröhrchen mit Diazonium-SpeziesControlled site-specific Functionalization of carbon nanotubes with diazonium species
Fuhrer, et al., "Crossed Nanotube Junctions", Science, 288, 21, April 2000, S. 494; Yu Huang, et al., "Directed Assembly of One-Dimensional Nanostructures into Functional Networks" Science, 291, 26. Januar 2001, S. 630; Yi Cui, et al., "Functional Nanoscale Electronics Devices Assembled Using Silicon Nanowire Building Blocks" Science 291, 2. By using the electrochemically induced reaction of the present invention, control can be exercised to derivatize the nanotubes at specific locations. Existing technologies (MS Fuhrer, et al., "Crossed Nanotube Junctions", Science, 288, 21, April 2000, p. 494; Yu Huang, et al., "Directed Assembly of One-Dimensional Nanostructures into Functional Networks" Science, 291, January 26, 2001, p. 630; Yi Cui, et al., "Functional Nanoscale Electronics Devices Assembled Using Silicon Nanowire Building Blocks" Science 291, February 2, 2001, p. 851) can be used to produce a crossbar structure of nanotubes, in which a nanotube is attached to a substrate is fixed and a second nanotube hangs above it at a limited distance. Both nanotubes can be addressed electrically individually. Applying opposite potentials to the two tubes causes the upper tube to deform and essentially come into contact with the lower tube, "contact" as used herein means both physical contact but also proximity of the entities within an infinitely small one Distance (called van der Waals contact) at which the structures can influence each other on a molecular and electronic scale.
This deformation leads to two Properties of importance. First, the top tube becomes physical deformed what is based on common understanding of the effects of the bending stress on the reactivity at the deformation point to a possibly higher chemical reactivity leads. This property would a selective functionalization at the point of contact by means of the electrochemical Reaction engineering with diazonium salts allow. Second, there is a higher potential at the point of "crossing" between the tubes reached.
In the present invention directed functionalization of the contact points of crossed nanotubes Applying potential to the ends of the nanotubes (as is known in the art) in the presence of α, ω-bis (diazonium) salts or mono-diazonium salts are carried out, with an interactive Functionalization in the area of the intersection at the opposite end would allow.
Any such method could be used Crossbar arrangement of nanotubes be functionalized. For example, a crossbar construction of nanotubes is carried out Fluid flow over a patterned Substrate or by direct tube growth made between poles (posts) or by any other method. About that could out the diazonium salt structure described here in a diazonium solution, with Voltages on orthogonal tubes, happen regardless of the construction process for the tube arrangements. Applying potential to the nanotubes in the presence of diazonium salts would one Allow functionalization at the intersection area.
The diazonium species are characterized by that at the point of contact existing potential led with the surface of the nanotube to react so that functional molecular devices at the points of contact be attached. Site-specific functionalization could Use of nanotubes enable in molecular electronics applications because of the device functionality at the crossing points is critical. The crossed nanotubes therefore provide a process for directly addressing the functionalized molecules, including molecules that as molecular switches, molecular wires and in other functions and uses as is well known in the art work.
Also, this procedure would be the attachment different molecules at nanotube crossing points, i.e. a controlled attachment of two or more different ones chemical functionalities allow at different locations on nanotubes. This would be done by putting a potential in a certain set of positions docks while they find themselves in a solution of a first diazonium salt, then in a solution of one second diazonium salt and potential in other positions moored, etc. Also allows site specific functionalization that individual molecules or Groups of molecules through metallic contact pads (pads) or other contact means, as are known in the art, are addressed electrically. Just such a molecule of electronic interest is incorporated in SWNT-8.
Anwendung chemisch modifizierter Kohlenstoff-Nanoröhrchen in Polymer-VerbundmaterialienChemical application modified carbon nanotube in polymer composite materials
Polymer materials and polymer / composite materials are widely used for Structural materials and a variety of other uses are used. Those made using the methods disclosed herein Derivatized carbon nanotubes can be used in combination with existing ones Polymer materials are used to make new polymer / composite materials to accomplish. Generally could possible composite materials with chemically modified nanotubes and thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers and others become. There are a variety of chemical modifications Structure of the polymer matrix, i.e. Polyethylene, various epoxy resins, Polypropylene, polycarbonate, etc. There are also tons of possible ones Variations in the chemical groups attached to the nanotubes can be. Accordingly, it is possible select a particular polymer and group to make the Properties of the particular desired Improve polymer / composite material.
For example, the polymer / composite material will have significantly improved properties, such as increased strength and / or conductivity. And when modified with suitable chemical groups, the nanotubes are chemically compatible with the polymer matrix, which means that the properties of the nanotubes (in particular mechanical strength) are transferred to the properties of the composite material allowed overall. To achieve this, the modified carbon nanotubes can typically be carefully mixed (physically mixed) with the polymer material and allowed to react at ambient or elevated temperature.
Duroplastethermosets

For example, a polymer / composite material required containing pure (and underivatized) single-wall carbon nanotubes, so that the polymer has certain improved conductivity properties would; the pure and underivatized carbon nanotubes can however, do not distribute sufficiently in the polymer. By derivatizing of the nanotubes with a certain group the derivatized nanotubes then be distributed appropriately. Because the derivatization of the nanotube possibly the conductivity of the nanotube impaired has (and therefore an effect on the conductivity of the polymer / composite material it may be desirable be to reverse the derivatization process to after distribution to remove the functional groups from the nanotubes. To this Way, the conductivity of the material recovered become. This can be done by any method that the derivatization reverses, such as increasing the temperature of the polymer / composite to a temperature at which the functional group dissociates. Typically this temperature appears to be at least about 250 ° C.

In addition, the thermoplastic also using the derivatized carbon nanotube getting produced. The functional groups would, while not necessarily chemically bound to the polymer, away from the tube extending physical extensions be (like branches of a tree) that the polymer / composite materials additional Give firmness. This improvement can be due to a roughening effect on the nanotube surface, the the friction increases and reduces the sliding of the polymer matrix along the length of the nanotubes. It is understood in technology that such an effect is another transmission the desirable Nanotube properties the composite material enables.
Unter Verwendung von oben diskutierten Verfahren wurden die folgenden funktionalisierten Einwand-Kohlenstoff-Nanoröhrchen hergestellt, worin n = 1 funktionelle Gruppe von 20 bis 1 funktionelle Gruppe von 40 Nanoröhrchen-Kolenstoffen: Using the methods discussed above, the following functionalized single-wall carbon nanotubes were made, where n = 1 functional group from 20 to 1 functional group from 40 nanotube bulbs:

ZusammenfassungSummary
The invention encompasses new methods for the chemical modification of carbon nanotubes. Such methods involve the derivatization of multi-wall and single-wall carbon nanotubes, including small diameter (about 0.7 nm) single-wall carbon nanotubes, with diazonium species. The process allows a variety of organic compounds to be chemically bonded to the side and ends of carbon nanotubes. These chemically modified nanotubes have applications in polymer composite materials, molecular electronics applications and sensor devices. The derivatization methods include electrochemically induced reactions, thermally induced reactions (via in situ generation of diazonium compounds or pre-made diazonium compounds), and photochemically induced reactions. The derivatization causes significant changes in the spectroscopic properties of the nanotubes. The degree of functionality determined is approx. 1 carbon bearing a functional group of 20 to 30 carbons each in a nanotube. Such electrochemical reduction processes can be adapted to use a site-specific chemical functionalization of nanotubes. In addition, the derivatized nanotubes, when modified with suitable chemical groups, are chemically compatible with a polymer matrix, which allows the properties of the nanotubes (such as mechanical strength or electrical conductivity) to be transferred to the properties of the composite material as a whole. When modified with suitable chemical groups, the groups can also be polymerized to form a polymer containing carbon nanotubes.
