Abstract
The invention relates to the use of particulate zeolite in a single or multi-layer construct containing one or at least two plastic layers as an odor remover, the single or multi-layer construct preferably being an artificial leather.
Description
The invention relates to the use of particulate zeolite as an odor remover in a single or multi-layer construct containing one or at least two plastic layers, in particular in an artificial leather.
Single or multi-layer constructions, such as artificial leather, are being assessed more and more critically with regard to emissions and their own odor. A reduction in odors and emissions is achieved, for example, through baking processes during production or through downstream processes. The odors and emissions are triggered by raw materials and reactions of the individual product components as well as the necessary process control parameters such as temperatures.
Odor absorbers or odor removers based on cyclodextrins are also used. These compounds are also used in the food industry (food additive E 459). It is also known that zeolites are used as odor absorbers as well as absorbers for emissions-causing substances such as butanone oxime.
Such materials used as odor absorbers usually have cage structures in which substances can be stored or absorbed.
Cyclodextrins have a limited temperature range of up to 200 °C under which they can be used. Due to their cellulose-like structure, cyclodextrins have a hydrophobic cage, although the outer cage is more hydrophilic. This makes it possible to primarily bind molecules that enter into a physical or chemical interaction with the cage. Hydrophobic molecules tend to be less bound or have lower affinity.
The materials used to reduce odor can be divided into two classes. One class is materials that are based on a hydrophilic molecular character. Another class are materials that have a hydrophobic character.
The object of the present invention is to optimize the odor properties of single- or multi-layer constructs, such as synthetic leather, i.e. the greatest possible reduction in the odors emanating from a single- or multi-layer construct such as synthetic leather should be achieved, ideally falling below the threshold of odor perception . The smallest possible amount of additional material should be needed to reduce odors.
The inventors have found that this problem can be solved by incorporating particulate zeolite as an odor remover into a single or multi-layer construct.
The invention therefore relates to the use of particulate zeolite in a single or multilayer construct containing one or at least two plastic layers as an odor remover.
When the particulate zeolite was used according to the invention, it was found that the single or multilayer constructs provided with zeolite obtained had a significantly reduced odor compared to a single or multilayer construct without zeolite. Through the use according to the invention, the odor notes of the single-layer or multi-layer construct determined according to VDA C3 could be reduced by one note, for example from a value of 4 to 3. In addition, the emissions were determined in accordance with the VOC and fog values determined using VDA 278 reduced by at least 20%.
The use according to the invention enables odor and emission improvements in single- and multi-layer composite systems. There are synergistic effects between zeolites for polar odor and emission-causing molecules for open-pored and closed systems. The particulate zeolite can be introduced into the single-layer or multi-layer construct by introducing it into the plastic masses used to form the plastic layers. Additionally or alternatively, a subsequent superficial loading of the entire single or multi-layer construct or a separate loading of the textile carrier of the single or multi-layer construct is possible. The introduction of the particulate zeolite into the single or multilayer construct can also be referred to as loading the single or multilayer construct with the particulate zeolite.
Surprisingly, the calcified versions of Zeolite 13X have proven particularly useful for odor absorption.
In addition, the particulate zeolite in the single or multilayer construct can serve as a stabilizer, for example to bind organic or inorganic acids, for example in a PVC layer.
The invention is explained in detail below, with further advantages also being described.
An odor remover or odor absorber is a substance that can reduce the smell of objects. This effect is usually achieved by allowing the odor remover to absorb substances in the object that has an odor, thereby preventing the substance from leaking into the environment.
The evaluation of the odor can be determined, for example, according to the odor values or grades of the VDA 270 C3 standard (storage 2 h, 80 °C). Further parameters for characterizing the single or multi-layer construct systems are the VOC value and the fog value. These values enable an estimate of the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC value) as well as the proportion of condensable substances (Fog value). These values can be determined according to the VDA 278 standard.
After dehydration, zeolites can bind various gas molecules. The prerequisite is that they are smaller than the “openings” in the internal cavities of the zeolite crystals; this forms the basis of their use as sorbents. For the perceptible odor, which is tested with VDA 270 C3, the molecules that cause the odor in the odor receptors must be specifically bound. In contrast, in the thermal analysis of organic emissions, all release products present are separated and identified using the FOG and VOC values (VDA 278), regardless of the odor effect. The absorption enables or ensures compliance with limit values.
Molecules that can be adsorbed due to the polar properties of the zeolites in the multilayer structures are, for example, odor-active molecules such as amines, thio compounds, oximes and phosphorus compounds, alcohols, carbon mono and diacids, aldehydes, ketones, butyrals, amides. Furthermore, non-polar substances can also be sterically bound by the cage structure, provided they can diffuse into the cavity of the cage.
As the particulate zeolite, one type of zeolite or a mixture of different types of zeolite can be used. Zeolite and the various types are known to those skilled in the art and are commercially available.
For example, zeolites of types A, B and X are suitable for use according to the invention, with a zeolite of type X being preferred. Examples of type A zeolites are type A3 zeolite, which irreversibly absorbs water, and type A4 zeolite, which reversibly absorbs water so that exchange is possible.
The zeolite is particularly preferably a particulate zeolite of type 13X. Type 13X zeolites are sometimes referred to as X13 type zeolites. This type has pores smaller than 0.9 nm and can therefore bind molecules such as amines, thiols, oximes and phosphine compounds. Zeolites of type X and especially type 13X have larger cage dimensions compared to other zeolite types such as A or B.
The particulate zeolite used in the present invention is preferably a calcified zeolite, more preferably a calcified zeolite of type X, and particularly a calcified zeolite of type 13X, which exhibits the best odor-absorbing properties. Type 13X zeolites have cage structures in which water molecules are reversibly absorbed so that no solid storage occurs. A suitable commercial product for a calcified zeolite of type 13X is, for example, Köstrolith® 13XP-calc from CWK Chemiewerk Bad Köstritz GmbH, for which a pore size of approximately 0.9 nm is stated.
A zeolite of type 13X, in particular a calcified zeolite of type 13X, allows, compared to other types of zeolite, the capture of larger molecules in the single or multilayer construct, of which even a few molecules can be smelled and are also referred to as ghost molecules.
Calcification is the incorporation of calcium ions or calcium salts into the zeolite. Calcification can be achieved by treating the zeolites with solutions or dispersions containing calcium ions or calcium salts and then drying them.
The particulate zeolite preferably has a particle size distribution such that it has a volume-based d90 value of not more than 25 μm, more preferably not more than 20 μm, more preferably not more than 10 μm.
The d90 value based on volume is a measure of the particle size distribution and means that 90 percent by volume of the zeolite used has a smaller particle size than the specified d90 value. For example, a d90 value of 25 µm means that 90 percent by volume of the particles are smaller than 25 µm. The d90 value can be determined using common methods such as optical methods, for example by laser diffraction particle size analysis.
The particulate zeolite is preferably used in an amount of 0.5 to 10% by weight, preferably 1 to 5% by weight, based on the total weight of the single or multilayer construct including zeolite.
The particulate zeolite can be used directly as a powder, for example for mixing into a plastic mass. The powder can also be predispersed in a plasticizer to obtain a premix, which is then added to a plastic mass. The zeolite powder can also be dispersed in a dispersion medium to obtain a dispersion which is used to impregnate the single or multi-layer construct or a textile support intended therefor. A suitable dispersion medium is, for example, water, an alcohol or a mixture of water and alcohol.
In the single or multi-layer construct containing one or at least two plastic layers, in particular artificial leather, cucurbiturils or cucurbiturils in combination with zeolites as described above can also be used as odor removers. Cucurbiturils are macrocyclic molecules composed of multiple glycoluril units. They have chemically inert cavities in which other molecules can be bound.
The particulate zeolite is used as an odor remover in a single or multilayer construct containing one or at least two plastic layers. The single-layer construct has a plastic layer, for example as a single-layer plastic film or single-layer plastic film. As a rule, it is preferred if the single-layer construct also has a textile carrier. The single-layer construct can then also be referred to as a single-layer composite. The multilayer construct has two or more plastic layers and can also be referred to as a multilayer composite. As a rule, it is preferred if the multilayer construct or the multilayer composite also has a textile carrier.
The single or multi-layer construct for use according to the invention has one, two or more than two plastic layers. The plastic layers can each be based independently of one another on the same or different polymers or polymer mixtures. As a rule, it is preferred if all the plastic layers contained are based on the same polymers or polymer mixtures. The one or more plastic layers may independently be non-foamed layers or foamed layers.
All polymers commonly used in such single- or multi-layer structures can be used as polymers for the plastic layers. Examples of suitable polymers are polyurethanes, including thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU), polyvinyl chlorides (PVC), thermoplastic polyolefins (TPO), thermoplastic elastomers (TPE), polyesters, e.g. polylactic acid (PLA), poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and polyethylene furanoate (PEF ), polyamides, acrylates, methacrylates, silicones, polycarbonates, polysuccinates, polybutyrals, e.g. polyvinyl butyral (PVB), and mixtures thereof.
In a preferred embodiment, one or more plastic layers of the single or multi-layer construct, for example all plastic layers, are formed from polyurethane (PU), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or a mixture of polyurethane and polyvinyl chloride (PU/PVC). Preferred plastic layers are therefore PU layers, PVC layers and PU/PVC layers. Polyurethane also includes thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU).
The polyurethane, including thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), can be formed by reacting blocked polyisocyanate with alcohols and/or amines, with oximes often being used as blocking agents. However, the polyurethane, including thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), is preferably formed by reacting unblocked polyisocyanate with alcohols and/or amines or by polyurethane dispersions.
It is understood that the plastic layers may contain one or more additives that are common in the art. Examples of such additives are plasticizers, flame retardants, stabilizers, fillers, pigments and dyes.
In a preferred embodiment, the single or multi-layer construct, in particular artificial leather, comprises a textile carrier. The single or multi-layer construct can have a textile carrier and/or a laminating layer, preferably a textile carrier and a laminating layer. The textile carrier is preferably connected to the remaining single or multi-layer construct (comprising one or more plastic layers) by means of the laminating layer.
The laminating layer is also based on a polymer or a mixture of polymers. The same polymers and preferred polymers that are described above for the plastic layers can be considered as polymers, so reference is made to them.
The laminating layer is also considered here as a plastic layer. The single or multi-layer construct can thus comprise a lining layer and a further plastic layer, with a lining layer and at least two further plastic layers being preferred.
The textile carriers customary in the field can be used as textile carriers. The textile carrier can be, for example, a fleece, knitted fabric, knitted fabric or woven fabric. The textile carrier can be formed, for example, from natural fibers, for example cotton, polyester, such as polyethylene terephthalate, mixtures of cotton and polyester, Lyocell®, polyamide, polyacrylates, polyolefin, aramid, polymethylpentene (TPX), carbon fiber, glass fiber, mineral fiber or mixtures thereof. The textile carrier can also be formed from biodegradable polymers, such as PLA and PHB.
In a preferred embodiment of the use according to the invention, the single or multilayer construct comprises a textile carrier or a textile carrier and/or a lining layer, in particular a textile carrier and a laminating layer, wherein the textile carrier and/or the lining layer is provided with the particulate zeolite. This embodiment is particularly suitable for an artificial leather, in particular a breathable artificial leather.
A preferred embodiment for a single-layer construct or a single-layer composite, in particular as artificial leather, has, for example, a polyurethane layer, in particular a thermoplastic polyurethane layer, on a textile support. If necessary, the textile carrier can be connected to the remaining single or multi-layer construct via a laminating layer.
The single or multi-layer construct can be, for example, a foil or a film. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the single or multi-layer construct is an artificial leather, with the single or multi-layer construct preferably having a textile carrier. The single or multi-layer construct is preferably a breathable single or multi-layer construct, particularly preferably a breathable artificial leather, with the single or multi-layer construct preferably having a textile carrier. An example of a commercially available breathable artificial leather is laif ® VyP from ContiTech AG.
A breathable single or multi-layer construct has continuous pores or channels in the construct, so that gas exchange from one side of the single or multi-layer construct to the other side is possible through the single or multi-layer construct. By combining open-pore constructions of the breathable constructs with zeolites, faster absorption or exchange can be achieved.
When used according to the invention, the particulate zeolite in the single or multilayer construct preferably absorbs both non-polar and polar molecules, resulting in a synergistic effect is achieved. A polar molecule has a permanent electric dipole moment, while non-polar molecules do not have a permanent electric dipole moment.
The single or multi-layer construct containing the zeolite, in particular artificial leather, can in particular be arranged as a surface material in a vehicle or in an interior.

- c) soaking the textile carrier in a dispersion containing the particulate zeolite, removing the textile carrier from the dispersion, drying the textile carrier and attaching the textile carrier to the remaining single or multi-layer construct.
In the case of process step a), the single or multilayer construct is soaked in a dispersion containing the particulate zeolite. As already described above, for example, water, an alcohol or a mixture of water and alcohol is suitable as a dispersion medium for the particulate zeolite. The dispersion containing zeolite can contain further additives, for example a binder such as PU or acrylate. The dispersion containing particulate zeolite is preferably an aqueous dispersion.
The proportion of particulate zeolite in the dispersion used for process step a) can be, for example, in the range from 1 to 20% by weight, preferably 2 to 20% by weight.
After impregnation, the single or multilayer construct is removed from the dispersion and the single or multilayer construct is dried to obtain the single or multilayer construct provided with the particulate zeolite. Drying involves removing the dispersion medium, usually water, from the single or multilayer construct. For this purpose, the wet single-layer or multi-layer construct after removal from the dispersion is expediently first squeezed in order to squeeze out the dispersion medium. The remaining dispersion medium is then removed by drying, conveniently by simply leaving it to stand under ambient conditions. If necessary, heating and/or air can be blown through to accelerate, but this is usually not necessary.
Loading with the particulate zeolite according to process step a) is particularly advantageous for a breathable single- or multi-layer construct, in particular a breathable artificial leather, such as laif® VyP. In such a breathable single or multi-layer construct, in particular breathable artificial leather, the particulate zeolite works very effectively.
The dried single or multi-layer construct can then also be provided with a top coat, for example by printing, screening, coating or spraying. The zeolite particles remain in both the paint and the textile carrier, if used, and can actively absorb odor molecules as well as non-odorous small molecules.
In the alternative or additional step b), the particulate zeolite is introduced into at least one plastic mass from which one of the plastic layers of the single or multi-layer construct is made is formed. The particulate zeolite can in this way be introduced into one or more of or all of the plastic layers of the single or multi-layer construct.
The respective plastic layers are preferably formed by applying the plastic mass to a suitable substrate and hardening the plastic mass in the usual way. Suitable application methods include brushing, printing or spraying. Curing may include solidifying, drying and/or crosslinking. In these systems, reverse coating is often used in technology, in which a plastic layer is first applied to a removable substrate and cured and then the layer formed is transferred to another substrate. Calender or extruder processes are suitable as alternative processes for producing the one or more plastic layers. In the first step, a thermoplastic film is drawn. Two or more of the films obtained can be laminated to form a multilayer composite.
In the case of the alternative or additional process step b), the particulate zeolite is preferably mixed at least into a plastic mass from which a lining layer of the single or multi-layer construct is formed. The particulate zeolite can only be introduced into the lining layer or additionally into at least one further plastic layer.
The particulate zeolite can, for example, be mixed into the plastic mass directly as a powder or as a premix of zeolite and plasticizer. The plastic mass from which the plastic layer is formed contains the polymer(s) and optionally one or more additives as described above. The plastic mass can be a pasty or thermoplastic mass containing oligomers or polymers. The plastic mass can also be in the form of granules. The plastic mass can also be an aqueous coating composition.
Dies gilt insbesondere für Zeolithe vom Typ 13X, insbesondere für kalzifizierte Zeolithe vom Typ 13X.An advantage of the use according to the invention is that the particulate zeolite can also be used in aqueous coating compositions since the hydrophilic components cannot penetrate into the cage structure of the zeolite. This is particularly true for type 13X zeolites, particularly calcified type 13X zeolites.
In the case of the alternative or additional process step c), a textile carrier is soaked in a dispersion which contains the particulate zeolite.
The proportion of particulate zeolite in the dispersion used for process step c) can be, for example, in the range from 5 to 20% by weight.
After removing the textile carrier from the dispersion, the textile carrier is dried. The textile carrier provided with the zeolite can then be attached to the remaining single or multi-layer construct, preferably using a lining layer as described above.
It has been found that the ideal use for the particulate zeolite is on the surface of the textile support. This makes use of the large surface area of the textile carrier. In addition, in a reverse coating process, the textile carrier is only applied to the base or the remaining single or multi-layer structure in the last step, so that the risk of temporary saturation of the zeolite is suppressed.
Regardless of how the single or multi-layer construct is loaded with the particulate zeolite, the loaded zeolite is particularly effective for a breathable single or multi-layer construct, in particular a breathable artificial leather, such as laif® VyP. Through the fine channels in the breathable single or multi-layer construct or artificial leather, odor molecules can be adsorbed into the zeolites located near the surface. The single- or multi-layer construct for the method according to the invention, in particular according to process step a), is therefore, in a preferred embodiment, a breathable single- or multi-layer construct, in particular a breathable artificial leather.
The single or multi-layer construct can be provided with a conventional single or multi-layer topcoat before or after loading with zeolite, for example by printing, screening, coating or spraying.
The invention also relates to a single or multilayer construct comprising one or at least two plastic layers and particulate zeolite, and which is obtainable by the method according to the invention described above.
The single or multi-layer construct according to the invention preferably has a textile carrier or a textile carrier and a laminating layer. The textile carrier can be attached to the remaining single or multi-layer construct via the laminating layer. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the textile carrier or the textile carrier and/or the lining layer are provided with the particulate zeolite in the single or multilayer construct. The single or multi-layer construct is preferably an artificial leather, more preferably a breathable artificial leather.
The invention will now be further explained using exemplary embodiments, which are not intended to limit the scope of the invention in any way.

Top coats and laminating coats suitable for PVC synthetic leather were each formed as individual coats on a substrate, e.g. grain tape or release paper.
For this purpose, top coats or laminating compounds were applied to the substrate and dried. Top coats or laminating compounds with and without odor removers were used. Particulate Köstrolith® 13XP-calc, also referred to as Zeolite X13, was used as an odor remover or odor absorber (hereinafter also referred to as absorber).
Procedure: Weigh in odor absorbers, plasticizers, then stir the mass at 7000 revolutions per minute with a Niemann stirrer to obtain a premix. Then prepare the PVC compound according to the standard instructions in the table below.
When using absorber, the individual coats obtained contained the absorber in a proportion of approximately 0.9% by weight for the top coat or approximately 1% by weight for the lining coat.
First, a 2.9% by weight dispersion is prepared by weighing in an odor absorber (Zeolite X13) and water. The mixture is dispersed for 10 minutes at 7000 revolutions per minute. As A production material Laif® VyP in the color black (F7901015) was used as a multi-layer construction.
This is a breathable, water vapor permeable padding material. It is manufactured as a 7-layer hybrid material made of vinyl and polyurethane raw materials and has the special feature of having a continuous, open, fine-pored coating. It is provided with a textile backing.
A 10×20 cm sample is soaked in the dispersion. Thanks to the pore structure, the dispersion can penetrate not only the carrier but also the coating, in contrast to compact artificial leather variants. The wetted surface by the dispersion is thereby increased. After removal, it was allowed to drain and dry at room temperature. After 24 hours, constant weight and the end of drying were achieved.
