Furthermore, the invention relates to a motor vehicle, in particular a motor car, with such an internal combustion engine.
The object of the present invention is to provide a method for operating an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle and a motor vehicle, so that a particularly advantageous operation of the internal combustion engine can be realized.
This object is achieved according to the invention by a method having the features of patent claim 1 and by a motor vehicle having the features of patent claim 10. Advantageous embodiments of the invention are the subject of the dependent claims.
A first aspect of the invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle, in particular a motor vehicle preferably designed as a passenger car, having at least one combustion chamber and designed, for example, as a reciprocating piston engine, i.e. as a reciprocating piston machine. This means that the motor vehicle, also referred to as a vehicle and preferably designed as a motor vehicle, in particular as a passenger car, in its fully manufactured state has the internal combustion engine, also referred to as an internal combustion engine or internal combustion engine, and can be driven by means of the internal combustion engine. In particular, it is provided that in the method the motor vehicle is driven by means of the internal combustion engine. In the method the internal combustion engine is fired, i.e. operated in its fired mode, so that the internal combustion engine provides an exhaust gas in the method. In the method the internal combustion engine is operated in a fired mode, also referred to as the first operating mode, so that the internal combustion engine provides the exhaust gas in the first operating mode. For example, the exhaust gas can flow out of the combustion chamber and flow through an exhaust tract of the internal combustion engine, also referred to as the exhaust system. The feature that the internal combustion engine is operated with fuel means that combustion processes take place in the combustion chamber and thus in the internal combustion engine, with a fuel-air mixture, also referred to as a mixture, being burned during the respective combustion process. This results in the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine. The mixture comprises air and a preferably liquid fuel. For example, the combustion chamber is partially delimited by a cylinder and partially by a piston, which is accommodated in a cylinder so that it can move in translation. For example, the cylinder is formed by a cylinder housing, in particular by a cylinder crankcase, of the internal combustion engine. The internal combustion engine has an output shaft, in particular designed as a crankshaft, which can rotate about a shaft axis of rotation relative to the cylinder housing. The internal combustion engine can provide drive torque for driving the motor vehicle via its output shaft.
In the first operating mode, within a respective working cycle of the internal combustion engine, a fuel injection is carried out, during which the fuel, by means of which the internal combustion engine is operated with fire, is injected directly into the combustion chamber. For example, the fuel injection is a main injection, during which, for example, a first amount of fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. In particular, during the fuel injection, the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber by means of an injector assigned to the combustion chamber. In particular, it is provided that the respective working cycle of the internal combustion engine comprises, in particular exactly, two complete revolutions of the output shaft and thus in particular exactly, 720 degrees crank angle. In addition, it is provided that in the first operating mode within the respective working cycle of the internal combustion engine, a post-injection is carried out chronologically after the fuel injection, in particular exactly, during which the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber, in particular by means of the injector.
For example, in the first operating mode, exactly two injections are carried out within the respective working cycle, in each of which the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber, in particular by means of an injector, with a first of the injections being the fuel injection and the second injection being the post-injection. For example, it is provided that in the first operating mode within the respective working cycle, an injection process taking place before the fuel injection, in which the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber, is omitted, so that preferably the said injection which takes place first in the first operating mode within the respective working cycle, i.e. is the first injection to take place, in which the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. In particular, it is provided that the fuel injection in the post-injection, i.e. the said injections, are spaced apart from one another in time, so that, for example, the first injection ends before the second injection begins.
In order to be able to implement particularly advantageous operation of the internal combustion engine, in particular over a long service life of the internal combustion engine, it is provided according to the invention that the internal combustion engine is operated in a second operating mode as a function of a temperature of the exhaust gas, also referred to as the exhaust gas temperature, and/or as a function of at least one variable correlated with the exhaust gas temperature, so that the internal combustion engine also provides the exhaust gas in the second operating mode. It is provided that in the second operating mode, the post-injection is omitted within the respective working cycle of the internal combustion engine. In other words, in the second operating mode, the post-injection is or is hidden, and therefore deactivated, within the respective working cycle. It is thus provided, for example, that when the internal combustion engine switches from the first operating mode to the second operating mode, the post-injection is hidden, and therefore deactivated, as a function of the exhaust gas temperature or as a function of the variable. In this way, excessive dilution, also known as oil dilution, of an oil intended or used for lubricating and/or cooling the internal combustion engine can be avoided or at least kept to a minimum. Oil dilution is understood to mean dilution of the oil by the fuel, whereby oil dilution occurs or can occur when unburned fuel gets into the oil, also known as engine oil. The invention is based in particular on the following findings and considerations: it is advantageous if the internal combustion engine, designed for example as a diesel engine, is operated in a low-load operation in an advantageous efficiency window in order to realize low-emission operation of the internal combustion engine. For this purpose, the internal combustion engine is kept at a certain, advantageous temperature, for example. For this purpose, it is conceivable to carry out a heating operating mode. The respective heating operating mode can keep the internal combustion engine at the advantageous, certain temperature. This takes place in the respective heating operating mode, for example via an exothermic setting, which includes, for example, post-injection. For example, at least part of the fuel injected directly into the combustion chamber during the post-injection can be oxidized in the exhaust tract, in particular in or by an oxidation catalyst. In a regeneration mode, in particular for regenerating a particle filter activated in the exhaust tract, high exhaust gas temperatures are also desirable, whereby here too a high exhaust gas temperature is caused by exothermicity, in particular in or on the oxidation catalyst and thus by the post-injection. In conventional solutions, the post-injection, also referred to as post-injection, is enabled, i.e. carried out, in a wide range of characteristics, depending on the operating mode. However, it has been found that the post-injection can lead to a disadvantage, since at least part of the fuel injected into the combustion chamber by means of or during the post-injection or during the post-injection can get into the engine oil, in particular via a cylinder wall delimiting the cylinder. This leads to undesirable oil dilution, particularly after a certain period of operation, and as a result to undesirable wear, particularly on or in bearings, valve guides, rocker arms, etc. of the internal combustion engine. This can result in a shortened oil change interval. Excessively high oil dilution values can cause problems for an internal combustion engine designed as a diesel engine, for example, due to associated or resulting wear. Detailed analyses have shown that undesirable oil dilution occurs primarily at low exhaust gas temperatures. A certain exhaust gas temperature is required for clean atomization of the fuel injected into the combustion chamber during the post-injection. Below this exhaust gas temperature, a large proportion of the fuel injected into the combustion chamber during the post-injection, particularly unburned, can adhere to the cylinder wall and subsequently dilute the engine oil. Therefore, according to the invention, the post-injection is specifically suppressed, and therefore deactivated, depending on the size and/or the exhaust gas temperature, for example in a certain exhaust gas temperature window and/or quantity window and/or quantity window and/or torque window. Below the quantity window mentioned, a range of the amount of fuel which is injected into the combustion chamber is directly injected, since the amount of fuel, also referred to as the fuel quantity, correlates with the exhaust gas temperature and can therefore be the stated quantity or a component of the stated quantity. The torque window is to be understood as a range of torque which is or can be provided, for example, as the respective drive torque by the internal combustion engine via its output shaft, since the torque correlates with the exhaust gas temperature and can therefore be the quantity or a component of the quantity. The exhaust window is to be understood as a range of the temperature of the exhaust gas, also referred to as the exhaust gas temperature. Measurements on the test bench showed that the method according to the invention can achieve strong improvements in oil dilution compared to conventional solutions. The lack of post-injection can be compensated for, for example, in other map areas by increased amounts of fuel, also referred to as fuel quantities, whereby the quantities are injected directly into the combustion chamber. This means that an advantageous and, for example, required exhaust gas temperature, for example for the exhaust tract, can still be provided.
In order to realize a particularly advantageous operation of the internal combustion engine, it is provided in one embodiment of the invention that in the second operating mode within the respective working cycle exactly one injection is carried out, namely the fuel injection, in which the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber.
It has also been shown to be particularly advantageous if the quantity includes the previously mentioned quantity of fuel, also referred to as the fuel quantity, with the fuel quantity being injected directly into the combustion chamber. The fuel quantity correlates, in particular directly, with the exhaust gas temperature. For example, it can be known that a first value of the fuel quantity correlates with a first value of the exhaust gas temperature or that the first value leads to the second value. This is explained in more detail using the following example: For example, a fuel quantity of three milligrams or five milligrams leads to an exhaust gas temperature of 230 degrees Celsius. Respective relationships between the fuel quantity and the exhaust gas temperature can be stored, for example, in a characteristic map which is stored, for example, in an alternating current electronic data storage device of an electronic computing device. For example, the method is carried out using the electronic computing device, also referred to as a control unit. By using the fuel quantity as the quantity or as part of the quantity, it is particularly advantageous to switch between the operating modes, so that particularly advantageous operation can be achieved.
A further embodiment is characterized in that the variable includes the aforementioned torque provided or that can be provided by the internal combustion engine via its output shaft, whereby switching between the operating modes can be carried out in a particularly advantageous manner. This enables particularly advantageous and, in particular, low-wear operation of the internal combustion engine to be achieved.
In a further particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, it is provided that the exhaust gas temperature is calculated from the variable, in particular by means of the electronic computing device. This allows the variable to be determined simply and precisely, since, for example, sensors or an excessively large number of sensors for detecting the exhaust gas temperature can be dispensed with.
It has also proven to be particularly advantageous if the size is calculated using the electronic computing device, for example using the calculation model. This means that the number of sensors can be kept particularly low, so that the method can be carried out particularly cost-effectively. This also ensures particularly advantageous operation of the internal combustion engine.
In order to be able to determine the size particularly precisely and thus to realize a particularly advantageous operation of the internal combustion engine, it is provided in a further embodiment of the invention that the size is detected by means of a sensor.
A further embodiment is characterized in that the exhaust gas temperature is detected by means of a temperature sensor, whereby the exhaust gas temperature can be determined particularly precisely. This ensures particularly advantageous operation of the internal combustion engine.
Finally, it has been shown to be particularly advantageous if the internal combustion engine is operated in the second operating mode when the exhaust gas temperature and/or the size is lower than a predeterminable or predetermined threshold value, for example, and when the internal combustion engine is not in overrun mode and the internal combustion engine is not idling. In other words, the internal combustion engine is not in overrun mode and If the internal combustion engine is not idling while the temperature and/or the size is lower than the threshold value, the internal combustion engine is operated in the second operating mode. If, however, the internal combustion engine is in overrun mode and the temperature and/or the size is lower than the threshold value, the internal combustion engine is operated in the first operating mode. If, for example, the internal combustion engine is idling while the temperature and/or the size is lower than the threshold value, the internal combustion engine is operated in the first operating mode. This means that in idling or overrun mode, the post-injection remains active or activated even though, for example, the size or the exhaust gas temperature is lower than the threshold value. In this case, it is particularly conceivable that in overrun mode, the post-injection is brought even further forward, in particular compared to at least one other area of overrun mode, and is set, for example, earlier than 15 degrees crank angle after the top dead center of the piston. As a result, for example, the exhaust tract or at least one area of the exhaust tract and thus, for example, at least one exhaust aftertreatment element of the exhaust tract can be kept at an advantageously high temperature in overrun mode or when idling, so that particularly low-emission and therefore advantageous operation of the internal combustion engine can be achieved. It is also conceivable that in the first operating mode and in overrun mode of the internal combustion engine, the post-injection takes place, in particular begins, at 15 degrees crank angle after the top dead center of the piston. For example, the threshold value is 200 degrees Celsius.
A second aspect of the invention relates to a motor vehicle, also referred to as a vehicle and designed, for example, as a motor vehicle, in particular a passenger car, which has an internal combustion engine and can be driven by means of the internal combustion engine. The internal combustion engine according to the second aspect of the invention is designed to carry out a method according to the first aspect of the invention. Advantages and advantageous embodiments of the first aspect of the invention are to be regarded as advantages and advantageous embodiments of the second aspect of the invention and vice versa.
Most preferably, the internal combustion engine is designed as a diesel engine, whereby the method can be used to realize a particularly advantageous operation of the diesel engine.

For example, in the method, the internal combustion engine is lubricated and/or cooled using an oil also referred to as engine oil. Excessive oil in the fuel, i.e. excessive amount of unburned fuel in particular, is also referred to as excessive oil dilution. In order to avoid such excessive oil dilution and thus ensure particularly advantageous operation of the internal combustion engine, particularly over a particularly long service life of the internal combustion engine, the internal combustion engine is lubricated and/or cooled in a second step S2 of the method. driving depending on a temperature of the exhaust gas, also referred to as exhaust gas temperature, and/or depending on at least one variable correlated with the exhaust gas temperature, in a second operating mode, so that the internal combustion engine also provides the exhaust gas in a second operating mode. In the second operating mode, it is provided that the post-injection is omitted within the respective working cycle of the internal combustion engine.
