Abstract
The numerical sequence of the invention:01. Use of superheated steam: advantages for process control02. Superheated steam process control of the pressure reduction of - see Mollier diagram03. Superheated steam - taking over the chemical-physical properties04. Superheated steam - the solution to reduce greenhouse gases, energy and investment savings2. Short version:2.1. Technosphere Problem of the invention = objective and solution to the problem • The existing process, i.e. H. The use of saturated steam is part of a process for converting biomass into a solid fuel, e.g. B. wood pellets. Due to the disadvantageous side effects of the emission of water and air in conjunction with the contamination and the energy requirement for the pre- and post-drying of the biomass, economical fuel production cannot be achieved. • The causes lie in the process technology, i.e. This means that saturated steam (wet steam) under a certain pressure as well as additional hot water and compressed air are introduced into the closed reactor. In this way, the biomass is defiberized over time through steam pressure digestion. In addition, the necessary pre- and post-drying of the biomass to be processed promotes water and air pollution. • The combined processing of this process therefore requires various cost-intensive machines and systems for air and wastewater purification. This applies especially to the drying system, e.g. B. Belt dryers, which usually require a large footprint and high costs for investment and operation, i.e. H. Thermal energy (kWh/kg vaporized H2O).In order to ensure the production of a sustainable solid fuel from renewable sources, a change to the currently used process using steam pressure digestion is urgently required.2.2. Problem solving with the current method:• The proposed method, i.e. H. a treatment with the advantageous chemical-physical properties of superheated steam.• Superheated steam is considered an ideal gas (controllable like any other gas). It is sterile, free of any oxygen, has a favorable viscosity, is perfect for its intended purpose, i.e. H. the defibration of the biomass under controlled conditions, is free of any water and air impurities, odorless, and not flammable. • The problem of the invention lies in the mastery of the current vapor pressure digestion technology, i.e. H. the dissolution of the internal structure of a lignocellulose-containing biomass in the form of hardwood or softwood. Their individual chemical components are holocellulose (approx. 46-87%) and lignin (in softwood approx. 28-41%, in hardwood approx. 18-25%), which are subject to defibration, i.e. H. the thermal treatment of the wood structure. • Hardwood reacts more sensitively to any change. Softwood, due to its higher lignin content, requires more treatment and certain catalysts to increase the defibration of its structure. • Superheated steam, due to its pressure and temperature, is perfect for the easy confinement of the biomass and the wood structure in between. Supported by the gas viscosity, constant pressure and the timely discharge of the defibrated biomass from the closed reactor. The specific chemical-physical properties of the biomass to be processed include, among others: their initial moisture content of approx. 45%, their weight and their size. Dissolution rate, gas application, desorption ability of the N2/O2 mixture with guaranteed conversion of the biomass in an oxygen-free environment (reactor) to prevent excessive corrosion and development of volatile organic compounds (VOC) are dependent on the surface.• To avoid deflagration, a Flushing of the reactor and its adjustment to a specified lower oxygen limit concentration (SGK) are required, which must be maintained throughout the entire defibration process. However, legislation requires treatment of the exhaust air stream for this process, which is implemented by installing a pressure swing adsorption system (PSA) to return emission-free residual gas into the process stream. • An absolute advantage of superheated steam technology is its easy control throughout the entire process. Due to the heat supplied by the superheated steam, the moisture in the biomass condenses in the hot phase without settling on the surface of the biomass. The evaporation* of the condensate occurs during the controlled transition from the hot to the wet steam phase, with the condensation generating a heat of 40.65 kJ/mol. The heat of condensation can have a positive effect on the overall energy balance of the process.*Mollier diagram.2.3. Area of application of the improved process:• The claim of the invention compared to the existing steam pressure pulping technology combines a significant reduction in process energy with a prevention of greenhouse gas emissions and water pollution.• In addition, the controlled defibration process offers the possibility of producing a renewable solid fuel (pellets) that can be used of fossil fuels in private households and industrial power generation.• The general process advantages lie in the primary chemical-physical properties of the superheated steam, which enable controlled moisture desorption and, last but not least, the defibration of all types of hardwood and softwood.• It is a completely controlled Interplay of forces between the chemical-physical structure of the lignocellulose-containing biomass, moisture and particle size, duration of heat and pressure exposure, and timely emissions from the closed reactor space.• By eliminating the pre- and post-drying process, savings can be realized in the overall investment. Investments for air and wastewater treatment are reduced to a negligible minimum.• The advantages of the proposed modified vapor pressure digestion process are the possibility of producing an environmentally friendly and sustainable fuel that can enable the much-needed replacement of fossil fuels.
Description
EinleitungIntroduction
The production of wood pellets is the subject of intensive research and development with the aim of using the natural energy content of the pellets' raw material, a lignocellulose-containing biomass in the form of hard or soft wood. The technique of defibration of wood structures was introduced by Layman in 1883, further refined and developed in 1926 by W.H. Mason, USA patented. It has been adapted for the production of high-quality pulp and the subsequent production of high-quality paper. However, one downside to Mason's technology is its unprecedented pollution of air and water.

The idea of using biomass on a large scale to generate energy arose in the wake of the oil crisis in 1970. Within a short period of just ten years, Sweden began mass production of wood pellets in 1980. Mason's defibration process used in paper production has not been established as a technology to improve the chemical-physical properties of wood pellets.

- • Significant increase in water and air pollution due to the addition of water and compressed air to the closed reactor during the energy-intensive process phase.
- • Corrosion due to the presence of oxygen, combined with the formation of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and odor pollution.
- • Eliminating water and air pollution requires sophisticated machinery and equipment to comply with environmental protection regulations.
- • Global pellet production has now reached a level of around 50 million tons/year, without pellet manufacturers making any serious attempt to incorporate the steam pressure pulping process into their business model.

- • Superheated steam is dry steam that is produced by adding heat to saturated steam (wet steam). Superheated steam can give off heat above the saturation line (Mollier diagram for steam 26 ) without changing the phase - it is considered an ideal, oxygen-free gas for the thermal degradation of the chemical component of the biomass of approx. 65% hemicellulose. In this process, the biomass (consisting of cellulose and lignin) can retain its excellent chemical-physical properties. Their degradation 17 of approx. 5% takes place at a process temperature of approx. 200-250 °C
Gas (Adsorbat) + Feststoff (Adsorptionsmittel) < - > an Feststoff adsorbiertes Gas + Wärme.
- • Wood is divided into two categories - softwood and hardwood. The wood cells of both categories can be divided into different groups according to their function:
- 1.) transport, 2.) support and 3.) storage cells.
- • The cell structure of wood is submicroscopic and allows gas diffusion through the structure of the lignocellulosic biomass.
- • The adhesion forces of moisture, such as capillary, electrosorption and chemosorption, are eliminated by the entry of gas after the internal wood structure is completely saturated (equilibrium).
- • The advantages of the chemical components of wood, i.e. cellulose and hecellulose, enable moisture to be absorbed through the inner cell wall. Electrochemical polars tend to absorb moisture and cause condensation, which leads to an increase in pressure and expansion of the capillary structure of the wood.
- • Hemicellulose exposed to elevated temperatures of 160-180 °C leads to structural chemical changes and the formation of acetic acid (CH 3 COOH), which is easily diluted with water and volatile. However, hemicellulose is of little value for its intended purpose and removal of its chemical structural bond to cellulose and lignin is essential.
- • The surface area and volume of the cell walls have been tabulated and have a high degree of exothermic free energy of 20-50 kJ/mol = enthalpy of adsorption/desorption, favoring application at low temperatures. At higher temperatures, however, there is no need to input any significant activation energy.
- • further chemical reactions of the catalysts to facilitate the breakdown of the fiber structure of the biomass. Softwood requires more treatment due to its higher lignin content. Breaking the fiber bond in wood requires the use of higher pressure and temperature along with certain chemical catalysts. For example, H 2 SO 4 can be used most effectively in softwood, but involves additional costs for neutralization and recycling.
- • However, hardwood can, if at all, be effectively pretreated with a hybrid of pearl millet, an environmentally friendly product that is ideal for its intended purpose and further reduces the energy required for defibration.
- • The attractive forces are weak and the molecules are concentrated in several layers on the absorption surface, ie the individual particles of the starting material.
- • Type of gas to be adsorbed: 16'23'
- the higher the critical temperature of a gas, the greater the van der Waals forces and thus the adsorption, e.g. B. the critical temperature. (K)/gas = 33/H; 126/ N2 ; 304/ CO2
- • Surface of the adsorbent:
- the larger the surface area, the stronger the adsorption. In the present invention and the vapor pressure digestion process, the lignocellulosic biomass, e.g. B. the softwood species spruce, the following properties: Weight, air-dry: 202 kg/m 3 ; Weight with 45% residual moisture: 354 kg/m 3 , size of the wood chips: 2.5-8 mm, with a surface area (according to ISO 92/7:2022 E) of 1,302 2 /g (free energy) and a pore volume of 1.669 cm3 /g
- • Adsorption of the solid adsorbent:
- Activation means an increase in the adsorption power of the solid adsorbent. This can be done by dividing the solid adsorbent or by removing the already adsorbed gases using superheated steam.
- • Desorption, the reverse of the adsorption process:
- Exothermic process, comparable to condensation in the course of increasing temperature and decreasing adsorption, ie gas (adsorbate) + solid (adsorbent) < - > gas adsorbed on solid + heat.
- Volumenänderung pro Masseneinheit in m3/kg: (extrudiertes Produkt)
von Dampf bei 1 bar Druck und 100 °C = 0,6 kg/m3
- Volumenänderung pro Masseneinheit in m3/kg: (extrudiertes Produkt)
- • Physikalische Adsorption:
- Die physikalische Adsorption ist mit dem Prozess der Kondensation vergleichbar. Die Anziehungskräfte sind schwach;
- • The biomass is expelled via an outlet valve with a diameter of <10% of the cylindrical reactor diameter. Designed with a high actuation speed in combination with a vacuum assisted pressure reducer and a relief valve for immediate pressure reduction.
- • The processes are divided into four sections according to the type of gas development in the biomass:
- 1 - phase transition, 2 - absorption, 3 - adsorption, 4 - chemical reaction.
- • The phase transition is the most commonly used and effective method for expanding products due to the associated extensive mass and volume change and is calculated as follows:
- • Mass change:
- ΔM = mass of vapor evaporated during steam pressure digestion per unit mass of extrudate before steam pressure digestion.
- cp = specific heat of the extrudate = 1.83 kJ/kg*K
- hfg = latent heat of vaporization of water at 100 °C = 2257 kJ/kg*K
- T 1 = product temperature before steam pressure digestion (°C); T 2 = product temperature after steam pressure digestion (°C)
- ΔM = mass of vapor evaporated during steam pressure digestion per unit mass of extrudate before steam pressure digestion.
- • Volume change:
- Volume change per unit mass in m 3 /kg: (extruded product)
- Volume change per unit mass in m 3 /kg: (extruded product)
- • Physical adsorption:
- Physical adsorption is comparable to the process of condensation. The attractions are weak;
- the molecules are located in several layers on the surface.
- • Explosion expansion E (m 3 /sec./kg):
- This is the change in the system volume per unit of time and mass, which is controlled by the rate of pressure change, the rate of heat transfer or the rate of chemical reaction of the gases with water up to a chemical equilibrium. E = ΔC N 2 /Δt ρN 2 (m 3 /s kg), calculated average up to 12 m 3 sec./kg and an assumed decompression time between 0.1 and 0.5 s
- the explosive expansion requires special design precautions for the pressurized cyclone. 11'16'18' .

In particular:
- • The moisture is removed (desorbed) from the molecular structure of the wood in a complex process by superheated steam, which is introduced into the closed space in the lower half of the conical reactor part at a specified temperature and under a specified pressure.
- • The reaction of the applied heat follows the convention of the Soret effect 3' 23 that the heat of the cold side attracts moisture from the warm side, thereby forcing an expansion 18 and later a breakup of the fiber structure of the wood, so that complete desorption of the moisture is made possible.
- • The adsorbate, that is, the adsorbed moisture, is immediately heated during contact with the dry superheated steam and reaches, at a rate of 1.3-33 mm/s, each gap of the biomass content, which at each specific volume is half the cylindrical height of the reactor takes.
- • Up to this point, the superheated steam releases heat through convection and forces the condensation of the moisture contained in the biomass, so that the superheated steam remains in the dry region, i.e. above the steam saturation line shown in the middle of the Mollier diagram. However, the condensation does not settle on the surface of the biomass.
- • Superheated steam supply up to a certain moisture content of approx. 10-15%, followed by controlled phase transition into the wet steam phase*, ie below the saturation line, whereby around 44.2 kJ/mol are generated by enthalpy changes during condensation as well as exothermic heat of desorption. Both with positive effects on the energy balance of the system *Mollier diagram. 27
