Description
The invention relates to a method for operating a computer tomograph when measuring a region of interest of an object and to a computer tomograph.
Radon-Transformation).In the imaging method of computed tomography (CT), a three-dimensional image of the object (object volume) is generated from a number of projections of an object. The projections show line integrals of a scalar object property (cf. Radon transformation).
In X-ray computed tomography, these projections are calculated from radiographs of the object and show the integral X-ray attenuation of the object. Two-dimensional (2D) x-ray detectors are often used to generate the transmission images. Each picture element (pixel) of such a transmission image is a measure of the attenuation of the X-ray radiation on the way from the X-ray source (imagined as a point) to the respective detector pixel. Using 2D X-ray detectors, a three-dimensional (3D) object image can be determined. This object image is also referred to as a volume data set (VDS) or object volume. Depending on the application, it is desirable to achieve the best possible spatial resolution in the VDS, e.g. to be able to resolve the smallest possible object details. In workpiece testing in particular, the best possible spatial resolution is of great importance, for example to be able to detect defects in the workpiece.
The maximum resolution that can be achieved in an X-ray transmission image depends, among other things, on the smallest achievable size of an X-ray source spot (also referred to as a focal spot) and on a maximum magnification with which an object or areas of an object can be imaged on the X-ray detector. For maximum magnification, the object or the area of the object must be positioned as close as possible to the X-ray source spot. In the simplest version of computed tomography, the entire object to be examined is always imaged completely (i.e. without trimming) on the X-ray detector. A constant magnification is used here, at which the object can always be completely imaged at any transmission or rotation angle. A size of the picture elements (voxels) in the VDS is then given by the size of the detector picture elements divided by the magnification. With larger objects, i.e. with comparatively low magnification, the voxel size is relatively large, so that smaller object details cannot be resolved in the VDS.
In a variant of computed tomography, only a predetermined region of interest (ROI) of an object is recorded with greater magnification and improved resolution. Areas of the object that lie outside the area of interest may then not be imaged on the X-ray detector.

The invention is based on the object of creating a method for operating a computer tomograph when measuring a region of interest of an object and a computer tomograph with which the region of interest can be recorded, in particular with the maximum possible magnification.
The object is achieved according to the invention by a method having the features of
- a) All object points of the region of interest should be imaged with the maximum possible magnification onto a detector surface of an X-ray detector.
- b) An arrangement of the focal spot at the source point should be realizable with a parameter range of an object movement device and/or a source-detector movement device of the computer tomograph.
- c) A specified minimum distance between the x-ray source (in particular an outer contour of the x-ray source) and the object or between the x-ray source (in particular an outer contour of the x-ray source) and an object holder should be maintained.
Each source point of the source trajectory satisfies these three conditions. After the source trajectory has been determined, the determined source trajectory is traversed by controlling the object movement device and/or the source-detector movement device, while transmission images of the region of interest are recorded at the respectively associated predetermined transmission angles. An object volume can then be reconstructed from the recorded transmission images in a manner known per se.
- c) ein vorgegebener Mindestabstand zwischen der Röntgenquelle (insbesondere einer Außenkontur der Röntgenquelle) und dem Objekt oder zwischen der Röntgenquelle (insbesondere einer Außenkontur der Röntgenquelle) und einem Objekthalter eingehalten wird;
- a) all object points of the region of interest are imaged with maximum possible magnification on a detector surface of an X-ray detector,
- b) an arrangement of the focal spot at the source point can be realized with a parameter range of an object movement device and/or a source-detector movement device of the computer tomograph, and
- c) a predetermined minimum distance between the x-ray source (in particular an outer contour of the x-ray source) and the object or between the x-ray source (in particular an outer contour of the x-ray source) and an object holder is maintained;
- c) ein vorgegebener Mindestabstand zwischen der Röntgenquelle (insbesondere einer Außenkontur der Röntgenquelle) und dem Objekt oder zwischen der Röntgenquelle (insbesondere einer Außenkontur der Röntgenquelle) und einem Objekthalter eingehalten wird;
- a) all object points of the region of interest are imaged with maximum possible magnification on a detector surface of the X-ray detector,
- b) an arrangement of the focal spot at the source point can be realized with a parameter range of the object movement device and/or the source-detector movement device, and
- c) a predetermined minimum distance between the x-ray source (in particular an outer contour of the x-ray source) and the object or between the x-ray source (in particular an outer contour of the x-ray source) and an object holder is maintained;
The method and the computer tomograph have the advantage that a radiograph of the region of interest is recorded with the respective maximum possible magnification from any direction, that is to say for any given radiographic angle. Maximum possible means that the magnification used is that which can be achieved under the restrictions of a structure of the computer tomograph, in particular under restrictions of parameter ranges of the object movement device and/or the source-detector movement device, and a shape of the object. With a sufficiently small size of a focal spot (source spot) of the x-ray source, the maximum possible resolution is particularly limited by a distance between the region of interest and the x-ray source or the focal spot of the x-ray source. This distance must therefore be as small as possible. The distance is chosen to be as small as possible, in particular while complying with conditions b) and c). In any case, however, all object points of the region of interest must still be imaged on the x-ray detector, i.e. an x-ray fan or cone impinging on a detector surface of the x-ray detector must have penetrated the object points on the way from the focal spot to the x-ray detector.
Position information on the region of interest (ROI) of the object is received in particular at the beginning of the method for the object to be measured and its arrangement on the turntable and taken into account in the further method. The position information is received and/or processed in particular in coordinates of the object arranged on the turntable.
The source trajectory is determined within the coordinate system of the object placed on the turntable. This means in particular that the source points of the source trajectory wander around the object depending on the respectively associated transmission angle.
A computer tomograph is in particular a computer tomograph used in industrial measurement technology. An object is in particular a workpiece.
The arrangement of the X-ray source and the X-ray detector is in particular fixed to one another, that is to say that of the source spot of the X-ray source X-ray fans or cones emanating with an X-ray beam opening angle always strike a detector surface of the X-ray detector in the same way, regardless of a transmission angle and an object position.
In particular, an object moving device is configured to move an object in directions perpendicular to a rotation axis of the turntable (hereinafter, these directions are referred to as x and y directions). The object movement device can, for example, have actuators such as movable linear tables. For example, the object moving device can move the object in the kinematic order XZYR, that is, a linear stage in the x-direction can move an entire assembly of the object moving device in the z and y directions and the turntable, etc. The object moving device has a limited range of parameters within which an object can be moved in each direction.
A source-detector movement device is set up in particular to move the x-ray source and/or the x-ray detector relative to the object. For this purpose, the source-detector movement device can have actuators, such as linear tables, etc. The source-detector movement device also has a limited parameter range within which the source and/or the x-ray detector can be moved. In this case, an arrangement of the x-ray source and x-ray detector can be changed in relation to one another.
Parts of the control device can be designed individually or combined as a combination of hardware and software, for example as program code that is executed on a microcontroller or microprocessor. However, it can also be provided that parts are designed individually or combined as an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) or field-programmable gate array (FPGA).
In particular, it is provided that the determined source trajectory is transformed into control coordinates of the object movement device and/or the source-detector movement device before the actuation. If only one object movement device is used, then in particular a transformation takes place for each transmission angle, in which it is taken into account that the object is rotated. As a rule, the turntable is arranged on the object moving device, so that the turntable is moved together with the object by means of the object moving device. A position of the X-ray source and the X-ray detector remains the same for all transmission angles, while the object is rotated and moved together with the turntable. The source trajectory is accordingly transformed into control coordinates of the object movement device. In particular, the coordinate system of the object arranged on the turntable is rotated by the respective irradiation angle and the control coordinates are determined from the coordinates of the source point belonging to the irradiation angle in the rotated coordinate system and supplied to the object movement device. The source-detector moving device, if present, is basically proceeded in the same way.
According to the invention, it is provided that source points in the coordinate system of the object arranged on the turntable, starting from a respective starting point with maximum magnification of the object points of the region of interest, are shifted along a limiting straight line, which is defined by an X-ray beam fan with an X-ray beam opening angle emanating from the respective starting point, until condition b) is met. In this way it can be ensured that the object points of the region of interest are still all imaged on the x-ray detector and condition b) can nevertheless be met. The procedure here is as follows: The source point is selected in the coordinate system of the object arranged on the turntable in such a way that all object points of the region of interest can be imaged with maximum magnification. For this purpose, the source point is arranged as close as possible to the region of interest. This defines the starting point. However, the case can arise that this source point selected as the starting point cannot be realized with the object movement device and/or the source-detector movement device because the source point lies outside a parameter range. Therefore, starting from the starting point, the source point is shifted along a boundary line until condition b) is met. The boundary line is defined here by the x-ray fan or cone with an x-ray beam opening angle emanating from the starting point. If one considers the X-ray fan in the two-dimensional case as a two-dimensional fan, then there are two boundary lines which span the X-ray fan, with the starting point being at the intersection of the two boundary lines. Starting from the starting point, the source point is then shifted along the boundary line which runs in the direction towards realizable values within the parameter range of the object movement device and/or the source-detector movement device, a distance to the region of interest thereby being increased. Here, the movement is within the coordinate system of the object arranged on the turntable executed. The source point is then moved along this limiting straight line until condition b) is met, ie until the source point is again within the parameter range of the object movement device and/or the source-detector movement device. The resulting source point can then be further adjusted to meet condition c). However, it is always provided that all three conditions a), b) and c) are met.
In one embodiment, it is provided that before the source trajectory is determined, an overview computed tomography of the object is generated by means of the computer tomograph, with an object outer contour in the coordinate system of the object arranged on the turntable being determined on the basis of the overview computed tomography and being taken into account when checking condition c). This allows an object to be placed in any configuration on the turntable and yet an area of interest can be measured at the maximum possible magnification. In particular, it can be provided that the overview computed tomography is performed with a lower magnification and resolution than the final measurement.
This can save time. The outer contour of the object is then used to check and maintain the specified minimum distance between the X-ray source and the object at every irradiation angle. It can be provided here that the overview computed tomography also includes an object holder, which is also taken into account during the check. The outer contour of the object can be determined, for example, with the aid of threshold values for grayscale values of voxels of an object volume of the overview tomography.
In one embodiment, it is provided that CAD data of the object is received, with an object outer contour in the coordinate system of the object arranged on the rotary table being determined before the source trajectory is determined based on the received CAD data and a predetermined arrangement of the object on the rotary table and when Checking condition c) is taken into account. In addition to the CAD data of the object, CAD data of an object holder can also be received and taken into account.
In one embodiment, it is provided that a two-dimensional outer object contour of the object is determined, the plane of which is perpendicular to an axis of rotation of the turntable, the determined two-dimensional outer object contour and a corresponding two-dimensional outer source contour of the x-ray source being used to check condition c). This allows condition c) to be checked in a simple manner. If the two-dimensional outer contour of the object is determined from an overview computed tomography, then for example all voxels can be projected onto a plane that is perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the turntable. The two-dimensional outer contour of the object is then defined, for example by means of a threshold value or a filter. A (known) external source contour of the X-ray source is projected into the same plane. With the help of the outer contour of the object and the outer contour of the source, a maximum enlargement can be achieved in a particularly simple manner while maintaining the specified minimum distance, so that a source point that meets the conditions can be determined for each transmission angle.
One embodiment provides that a three-dimensional outer object contour of the object is determined, the determined three-dimensional outer object contour and a three-dimensional source outer contour of the x-ray source being used to check condition c). This makes it possible to take into account the three-dimensional outer contours of both the object and the X-ray source. In contrast to the use of two-dimensional outer contours, in the case of objects whose outer object contour is strongly dependent on a three-dimensional position (i.e. in which the outer contour not only depends on the angle of rotation, but also on a height or a z-direction along the axis of rotation varies), a maximum possible magnification can always be achieved, since the focal spot can sometimes be arranged closer to the object when taking into account the three-dimensional outer contours than when taking into account the two-dimensional outer contours.
In one embodiment it is provided that several regions of interest of the object are measured, with a source trajectory being determined for each region of interest. In this way, radiation with the maximum possible magnification can be achieved for each of the regions of interest. Position information on the multiple regions of interest (ROI) of the object is received in particular at the beginning of the method for the object to be measured and its specific arrangement on the turntable and taken into account in the further method.
In a further-developing embodiment, it is provided that at least one recorded radiograph, which was recorded for a recording geometry of a region of interest, as a radiograph for another region of interest for an at least similar recording geometry ria is used. In this way, acquired transmission images that were acquired for the same or at least a similar transmission angle can be used for a number of regions of interest. A measurement time can be reduced as a result. This is particularly advantageous if the regions of interest for which the radiographs are used are close to one another in the object. In this case, a recording geometry is defined in particular by an arrangement of the x-ray source, object and x-ray detector relative to one another. Similar recording geometries occur, for example, in the case of plate-shaped objects that are extended in one direction, for which the object must always be circumnavigated in the same way by the X-ray source for some intervals of the transmission angle, i.e. intervals in which the source trajectories are the same or at least very similar. Instead of acquiring the radiographs again for these intervals for a further region of interest, the radiographs already acquired for another region of interest can be used in the reconstruction of the object volume of the further region of interest, taking into account the actual recording geometry of these radiographs.
One embodiment provides that an X-ray power of the X-ray source and/or an exposure time of the X-ray detector is changed as a function of the source points on the source trajectory and/or a distance between the X-ray source and the object. This makes it possible, in areas of the source trajectory where the source is further away from the region of interest of the object to maintain the specified minimum distance or to avoid collision, i.e. in areas where the magnification of all object points in the region of interest has decreased, to use a larger focal spot (source spot) of the X-ray source and thus a greater X-ray output without the radiographic images becoming blurred. Due to the greater X-ray power in these areas of the source trajectory, more photons can contribute to the formation of the image in the X-ray detector. A noise in the recorded transmission images and an object volume reconstructed therefrom can be reduced as a result. Alternatively, the exposure time of the x-ray detector can be reduced in these areas of the trajectory, in order in particular to shorten the total measurement time.
One specific embodiment provides for the object to be measured continuously, with the source trajectory being traversed continuously. In this case, continuously means in particular that the axes of the object movement device and/or the source-detector movement device are continuously moved while transmission images are being acquired. A measurement can be accelerated as a result.
