Description
The invention relates to a method for producing an energy cell and a corresponding energy cell.
Energy cells are also referred to as battery cells or accumulator cells and are used as a mobile energy source. In principle, an energy cell can be used individually. Typically, however, several energy cells, often of the same type, are combined to form a battery module. The voltage and current of the battery module can then be adjusted by appropriately connecting the energy cells to one another. Energy cells and also battery modules are used, for example, as secondary cells in an electric or hybrid vehicle to supply an electric drive train of the vehicle with energy. An example of a power cell is a lithium ion cell.
The problem with an energy cell, especially a lithium-ion cell, is that gas is generated over time via secondary chemical reactions, which gas cannot easily escape, for example due to the design of the energy cell. For example, pouch cells are regularly sealed so that gas exchange with the environment is not possible. A power cell that has accumulated gas over time can suddenly and unpredictably fail, e.g. rupturing to vent gas, and sometimes even exploding or burning up. Accordingly, the chemical reaction and especially the gas development represent a safety risk. Above all, an energy cell can already fail even though the so-called SOH (“state of health”) of the energy cell is still above a guaranteed value (EOW = “end of warranty”). ) is from which the energy cell would be sorted out, i.e. if the energy cell itself is still considered functional, e.g. due to its electrical parameters.
The aforementioned problem of the development of gas is intensified by the demand for ever higher power densities from energy cells. A higher power density requires a correspondingly changed material composition, which favors the chemical reactions that lead to gas evolution, whereby gas evolution is correspondingly increased.

Against this background, it is an object of the invention to avoid the negative effect of a chemical side reaction, specifically gas evolution, in an energy cell when used as intended. To this end, an improved method for producing an energy cell and an improved energy cell are to be specified.
The object is achieved according to the invention by a method having the features according to claim 1 and by an energy cell having the features according to
The method according to the invention is used to manufacture an energy cell and is therefore a manufacturing method. The energy cell is in particular a secondary cell. In the process, the energy cell is subjected to aging after being filled with an electrolyte and then degassed, i.e. degassing is carried out. The aging takes place as part of the production of the energy cell, i.e. before its completion and subsequent delivery for the intended use. The aging includes a temperature treatment, which is consequently also part of the manufacturing process and takes place before the energy cell is completed. A “temperature treatment” means in particular that the energy cell is stored at a specific temperature for a specific period of time. In this way, an aging of the energy cell is achieved, during which gas is regularly produced, which is then released during the subsequent degassing of the energy cell. The period of time and the temperature are expediently chosen such that as much gas as possible is already generated during the production of the energy cell and is then discharged during degassing, so that the gas development during intended use is correspondingly reduced after completion. In particular, the temperature treatment is carried out at a temperature which is higher than room temperature, i.e. higher than 25°C.
The invention is initially based in particular on the observation that, especially for electric and hybrid vehicles, an ever greater range is required, specifically a range of at least 500 km. This results in a need for energy cells with a particularly high energy density. The energy density of an energy cell largely depends on the chemically active materials used to manufacture the energy cell. In the present case, the energy cell is preferably a lithium-ion cell, and such a lithium-ion cell is assumed below without loss of generality. The execution However, the same applies to other energy cells.
In order to achieve the highest possible energy density, especially on the cathode side, in the energy cell, a nickel-containing mixed oxide is preferably used as part of the cathode. In a suitable embodiment, the energy cell correspondingly has a cathode which is made from a nickel-containing mixed oxide. In particular, the cathode has a base, for example made of a metal, on which the mixed oxide is applied. The mixed oxide is also referred to as "active material". Analogously, the energy cell has an anode with a base, for example made of a different metal, on which another active material is analogously applied. The mixed oxide is in particular NCM (also referred to as NMC) or NCA, ie lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide or lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide. A nickel-containing mixed oxide which has a nickel content of at least 60%, preferably at least 80%, is particularly preferred. Such a mixed oxide is also referred to as "Hi Ni material". The values given for the nickel content relate to the proportion of nickel relative to other metals in the mixed oxide, with lithium not being taken into account. For example, in the case of the mixed oxide LiNi x Co y Al z O 2 , the proportion of nickel is x% and x+y+z=100%. A high proportion of nickel enables high charging/discharging capacities, so that a correspondingly higher energy density is achieved compared to a material with a lower proportion of nickel but with the same mass loading (measured in mg/cm 2 ). Conversely, a greater energy density is also achieved with the same installation space with a higher proportion of nickel.
The invention is also based on the observation that when an energy cell is used as intended at high temperature, ie above 25° C., gas is generated in the energy cell, which leads to performance losses and degradation of the energy cell. For example, the total capacity of the energy cell decreases or its electrical resistance increases. In particular, this is due to a reaction between the electrode (anode or cathode) and the electrolyte. In particular, mixed oxides with a high nickel content as the material for the cathode lead to greater gas development than materials with a comparatively lower nickel content. The nickel content in particular leads to lithium contamination on the cathode (especially on its surface), which is difficult to avoid. The number of lithium impurities increases with increasing nickel content. Of particular importance are the following two lithium impurities: 1) LiOH (lithium hydroxide), and 2) Li 2 CO 3 (lithium carbonate). Both lithium impurities regularly lead to chemical reactions which result in the evolution of gas, in particular the evolution of CO 2 .
Accordingly, LiF (lithium fluoride) is produced as a by-product of the gas development, so to speak, which accumulates particularly on the surface of the electrode and disadvantageously increases the electrical resistance of the energy cell. The accumulation of CO 2 and LiF is particularly problematic in energy cells that are sealed so that no pressure equalization or material exchange with the environment is possible, for example in so-called pouch cells.
A significant advantage of the method described here is that the gas development is integrated into the production, so to speak, in order to extract as much gas as possible from the energy cell during production and to correspondingly reduce later gas development after completion. For this purpose, the key mechanism for gas development, namely aging at high temperatures, is integrated into the production process. As a result, the gas development that would otherwise be feared at the beginning of the life of the energy cell is anticipated, so to speak taken by already aging and degassing the power cell as part of the manufacturing process.
The aging with the temperature treatment is expediently based on the specifications for the energy cell with regard to so-called "calendar aging". Calendar aging includes all aging processes that lead to performance losses and degradation of the energy cell independent of charging and discharging. On the other hand, performance losses and degradation resulting from repeated charging and discharging of the energy cell are referred to as "cycle life performance". In the present case, calendar aging in particular is simulated with aging with temperature treatment. Requirements for the energy cell with regard to calendar aging are, in particular, that the energy cell should be able to last at least 200 days at a temperature of at least 50°C and an SOC (“state of charge”, i.e. state of charge) of at least 90%, i.e. then still be functional should be. In particular, a high temperature and a high voltage (which is present with a high SOC) favor the gas development described, so that the specified specifications are quite challenging. The above requirements are now conveniently implemented individually or in combination during aging as part of the manufacturing process.
In a first suitable embodiment, the temperature treatment then takes place by storing the energy cell at a temperature of at least 50°C. For this purpose, the energy cell is placed, for example, in an oven or the like, heated to 50°C and then stored at this temperature for a certain period of time. In particular, the temperature does not vary during the period. An upper limit for the temperature is initially not important. In principle, the upper limit for the temperature for the temperature treatment is that gas development should primarily take place and the specifications with regard to calendar aging should be implemented, but without damaging the energy cell through excessive heating. Accordingly, a maximum temperature that can be expected when used as intended, e.g. 60°C or 100°C, or a melting point of one of the materials of the energy cell can be considered as an upper limit.
In a second suitable embodiment, the aging, more precisely the temperature treatment T, is carried out over a period of 1 to 5 days. This configuration is based in particular on the knowledge that the main gas evolution takes place, as described, at the beginning of the service life, so that it is initially sufficient to cover this beginning with aging, while the gas development is then significantly reduced during the further service life. Accordingly, the aging does not have to be carried out over the specified 200 days, but is advantageously shortened to 1 to 5 days. Above all, this also improves the economics of the process.
In a third suitable embodiment, the energy cell is charged to a SOC, i.e. a state of charge, of at least 90% for the aging and the temperature treatment. In other words: the energy cell has a total capacity and is charged to at least 90% of this total capacity. In the case of a lithium-ion cell in particular, an SOC of at least 90% corresponds to a voltage of 4.1 V, so that the energy cell is then suitably charged to a voltage of at least 4.1 V for aging and temperature treatment as an alternative or in addition. The energy cell is charged in particular with a charger.
In principle, the aforementioned configurations can be implemented individually or in any combination with one another.
The temperature treatment in particular is of particular importance in the present case. However, this and aging in general are typically integrated into a more extensive process for manufacturing an energy cell. Such a method has several steps, which are carried out in a specific order and then finally lead to the finished energy cell. First, the energy cell is assembled in particular, in this case two electrodes (an anode and a cathode) are assembled with a separator to form a cell stack and this cell stack is inserted into a cell housing, which then surrounds the cell stack, in particular to protect against environmental influences. In addition, the energy cell is filled with an electrolyte and then the cell housing is sealed, which basically completes the assembly. The assembly is not important in the present case, it is only relevant that the special aging described here with temperature treatment takes place after filling with electrolyte and in particular after the assembly of the energy cell as a whole, so that all materials are available during the aging and the The chemical reactions described and, above all, the evolution of gas take place as described.
After aging with temperature treatment, the energy cell is suitably degassed, ie the gas which was generated in the energy cell as a result of aging is discharged, in particular by opening the cell housing for this purpose. The cell housing is then sealed again i.e. closed. In addition, the aging with heat treatment described here is expediently not the only aging that is carried out as part of the process. A further, in particular a first, aging preferably takes place beforehand. Subsequent to a particular aging process, the energy cell, more precisely its cell housing, is expediently degassed each time, ie in particular opened and sealed again. During degassing, the gas that was generated during the respective aging process is removed from the energy cell.
In an advantageous embodiment with multiple aging, the energy cell is degassed both in a first cycle and in a second cycle, so that the energy cell is degassed at least twice during its manufacture. In each cycle, the energy cell is first charged in a charging step, e.g. with a charger, then aging is carried out in an aging step, then the energy cell is degassed in a degassing step, e.g. by separating a gas pocket of the energy cell, and finally in a sealing step sealed. The energy cell is thus sealed at the beginning and end of each cycle.
The aging with the temperature treatment is preferably carried out in the aging step of the second cycle described above. After aging with heat treatment, the energy cell is preferably not charged further, but the state of charge that is present after the second cycle is a finished state of charge of the energy cell, i.e. the state of charge with which the finished energy cell is delivered for the intended use. In a suitable development, a temperature treatment also takes place in the aging step of the first cycle, but this is not necessarily the same as the temperature treatment in the second cycle, but the temperature, the period of time and/or the SOC can also be selected differently.
In principle, the method is suitable for the production of any cell type, but the energy cell is particularly preferably a pouch cell. A pouch cell is particularly at risk of gas development because a pouch cell is completely sealed and gas exchange and pressure equalization with the environment are not possible, and because the cell housing of a pouch cell is only a thin film, e.g a thickness of less than 1 mm, which is correspondingly at risk of cracking. In the case of a pouch cell, for example, the cell stack made up of electrodes and separator is surrounded by a cell housing which is designed as a bag and is initially closed on three of the four sides. Correspondingly, the cell housing has an open, fourth side, through which the electrolyte, in particular, is then filled during production. The cell housing suitably has an excess length on this open side, which after filling with the electrolyte serves as a so-called gas pocket during later degassing. The gas that is produced during aging collects in the gas axis, which is simply separated for degassing. As a result, an open side is again formed on the remaining cell housing, which is sealed again. In the case of repeated degassing, the excess length of the cell housing is expediently designed in such a way that a number of gas pockets can be separated, in particular exactly one gas pocket for each cycle.
An energy cell according to the invention is preferably produced using a method as described above. In particular, the energy cell is produced in that, after being filled with an electrolyte, it is subjected to aging and then degassed, with the aging comprising a temperature treatment. An energy cell produced in this way is characterized in particular by reduced gas development when used as intended.
Preferably, the power cell is used in an electric or hybrid vehicle. In this case, the energy cell is combined in particular with several other energy cells of the same type to form a battery, which serves as an energy storage device for supplying an electric drive of the electric or hybrid vehicle.

In the present case, the temperature treatment T in the aging step A2 is of particular importance; all other steps are basically initially optional. The degassing step E2, in which the
As a result, in the method, the
In
In the method described here, the gas development is integrated into the production, so to speak, in order to extract as much gas as possible from the
The aging with the temperature treatment T is based on the specifications for the
In the exemplary embodiment shown, the temperature treatment T takes place in that the
