Description
The invention relates to a hypoglycemia early warning system and an early warning method for detecting hypoglycemia.
Severe hypoglycaemia can cause serious damage and even death to the person concerned. In most cases, loss of consciousness occurs first. Although most of those affected are prepared through training measures to recognize the corresponding signs of hypoglycaemia (such as cold sweat, etc.), not every hypoglycaemia can be recognized by those affected. In addition, frequent slight hypoglycaemia increases the risk of severe hypoglycaemia and makes it more difficult to recognize in the long term due to the habituation effect.
In case of suspicion, diabetics can determine the blood sugar level by a simple blood sugar measurement, as is known from the prior art, and, in the case of hypoglycaemia, can quickly solve the problem by drinking fruit juice or similar measures. It is problematic if the impending hypoglycaemia is not recognized in time.

The disadvantage of the prior art is that a person affected notices the signs of an imminent hypoglycaemia, such as cold sweat or convulsive shaking, too late or not at all. This is especially a problem during sleep or physical activity.
Systems are known from the prior art which continuously monitor the glucose concentration in the plasma (CGM) or in the adipose tissue (flash monitoring).
Practical, non-invasive systems for the permanent monitoring of blood sugar levels in the event of hypoglycaemia are not yet available.
The object of the invention is to provide a hypoglycemia early warning system and an early warning method for detecting hypoglycemia.
The object is achieved according to the invention by the features of claims 1 and 5.
The hypoglycemia early warning system according to the invention has an essentially closed capsule. This can be, for example, the passenger compartment of a motor vehicle, the cockpit of an aircraft, for example an airplane, or similar capsules that are sealed in a substantially gas-tight manner. It is important here that the capsule is gas-tight to such an extent that the breathing gases of the persons to be monitored or other particles emitted by them are collected there in higher concentrations than in the surrounding area. According to the invention, these breathing gases and/or particles are to be used to detect hypoglycemia. This is done using a gas spectrograph and/or particle detector, which is connected to the closed capsule via a gas line.
Hypoglycaemia is assumed if a quantity of gas of one or more of the named gases and/or a specific quantity of bacteria, microorganisms or other particles is detected. A warning signal is output so that the blood sugar of the person concerned can be determined by a measurement procedure known from the prior art. In particular, this can be an invasive procedure using the blood of the person concerned.
However, the permanent monitoring of the affected person's blood sugar level can be done non-invasively. It is sufficient if this person stays in the closed capsule and breathes normally.
The early warning system preferably has a pump, through which gas is supplied, in particular continuously and/or periodically, from the closed capsule to the gas spectrograph and/or particle detector. This allows the gas, or the gas composition, to be analyzed by the gas spectrograph the particle or other particles are detected by the particle detector.
The gas spectrograph is preferably designed as an electronic nose. For example, the DLR eNose according to publication [3] can be used here.
- Supplying a gas to a gas spectrograph and/or particle detector (14),
- wherein the gas spectrograph (14) detects one or more of the following gases:
- methyl nitrate
- acetone
- ethylbenzene
- ethanol,
- iso-pentyl nitrite
- propane
- methanol
- and/or the particle detector detects bacteria, microorganisms or other particles
- wherein if a quantity of gas of one or more of these gases and/or a specific quantity of bacteria, microorganisms or other particles is detected, hypoglycemia is assumed and a warning signal is emitted.
The method according to the invention can have all the features of the device according to the invention and vice versa.
- The figure shows a portable gas spectrograph, which can be designed in the form of the DLR eNose, for example. Such a gas spectrograph detects the existence and mixing ratio of specific gases in a gas sample, which are referred to as “volatile organic compounds”.
The breathing air of a person to be monitored, who may be in a closed chamber, for example, is supplied to the
