Description
Technisches GebietTechnical area
The present invention relates generally to a system and a method for thermal management in electric, hybrid or fuel cell vehicles. In particular, the invention relates to a system and a method for efficiently storing and reusing the thermal energy given off by a high-voltage drive battery of an electric vehicle and by other drive components.
Hintergrund der ErfindungBackground of the invention
Vehicles such as battery electric vehicles (BEV) or hybrid vehicles use large, high-voltage batteries (typically 250-800 V) to store the energy required to propel the vehicle. The flow of energy that flows into the traction battery when it is charged either through regenerative braking or from the public grid, as well as the flow of energy from the traction battery to drive the vehicle and its accessories, are measured by electrical current and voltage. The current flow causes the battery cells and their connection systems to heat up proportionally to the square of the current flowing, multiplied by the internal resistance of the cells and the connection systems. The higher the current flow, the stronger the heating effect. This applies equally to the power electronics and the electric drive motor. If chemically bound energy is used in a hybrid arrangement, e.g. in an internal combustion engine or a fuel cell, then its conversion also generates waste heat.
The performance of e.g. lithium-ion battery cells is highly temperature-dependent. The performance decreases if the cells are too cold or too hot, which can also lead to accelerated aging or permanent damage to the cells. It follows that, in addition to cooling, additional heating of the cells at lower ambient temperatures is necessary in order to enable charging if the cells are too cold. This is because the internal resistance of the cells increases at low temperatures. Most lithium battery cells cannot be charged quickly below 5 ° C and cannot be charged at all below 0 ° C. In addition, accelerated aging of lithium cells occurs above a temperature of 45 ° C.
Ähnlich wie Batterien erfordern auch Polymerelektrolytbrennstoffzellen (PEFC) eine enge Regelung der Betriebstemperatur in einem bestimmten Bereich (50-100°C), um effizient zu arbeiten, weshalb auch hier ein Wärmemanagement erforderlich istSimilar to batteries, polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFC) also require tight control of the operating temperature in a certain range (50-100 ° C) in order to work efficiently, which is why thermal management is also required here
In the past, the largest battery packs did not necessarily need special cooling because the physical size of the packs was sufficient and the relative current flow was small compared to the total capacity of the pack. However, since fast charging with charging times of 30 minutes or less today requires higher charging powers of over 200kW, more powerful electric vehicles require special heat management systems in order to meet the requirements of constant power and reasonable durability on the world markets.

It is therefore desirable to provide a system and method for thermal management of a hybrid or electric vehicle without the deficiencies described above.
Allgemeine Beschreibung der ErfindungGeneral description of the invention
In one aspect of the invention, the above object is achieved for a hybrid or electric vehicle that comprises a drive battery, a thermal management system that is thermally coupled to the drive battery and a washing water tank of a washing system. The washing water tank, sometimes also referred to as a washing water tank, contains a washing liquid, the washing liquid being used to clean the windshield of the vehicle and / or the optics of one or more additional driver assistance devices to be cleaned, such as cameras, lidars or the like. In such a washing system, which is installed as standard in all vehicles, the washing water tank is in fluid connection with at least one washing nozzle, which is arranged in front of the windshield or the component optics of the vehicle, so that when the washing system is activated, the washing water is fed to the washing nozzle, e.g. . B. by means of a washing pump, and the washing liquid is sprayed under pressure onto the windshield or the respective component optics. According to the invention, the heat management system is thermally coupled to the washing water tank by means of a secondary circuit, the secondary circuit comprising a heat exchanger which is arranged in the washing water tank in such a way that it can exchange heat with the washing liquid contained therein. In addition, a vehicle according to the invention further comprises a control unit which is designed such that the waste heat generated by the drive battery is conducted into the washing water tank. In other words, waste heat that is generated by the drive battery either during its rapid charging or while the vehicle is in motion is stored in the washing water tank.
In connection with the present invention, the term “heat exchanger” is to be understood in its broadest possible way and relates to any device which is intended for the exchange of heat. In its simplest embodiment, a heat exchanger is part of a coolant circuit comprising a tube through which a cooling liquid or cooling water circulates and in which the cooling liquid exchanges heat with another fluid such as air or water or the like that surrounds the tube.
The inventive principle of the currently described vehicle lies in the use of the heat capacity of the existing, preassembled washing water tank and its contents as a heat store. The washing water tank functions as a heat store, i.e. as a heat sink, in order to store waste heat as thermal energy when excess heat is available and has to be dissipated.
Since all vehicles are currently equipped with a washing water tank, the mass and space required for the heat storage are already available in the vehicles. In other words, the energy efficiency of electric or hybrid vehicles can be improved without adding additional mass or new and / or large devices to the vehicles. It should be noted that when waste heat is stored as thermal energy in the washing water tank, the washing liquid is heated. This side effect is advantageous because problems with frozen washing liquid would no longer arise and therefore no anti-freeze additive would be required. Since better cleaning results are achieved with a warmer washing liquid, the overall safety of the vehicle occupants would also be increased.
Since many electric vehicles are already equipped with intelligent liquid thermal management systems that can be used and configured as control units according to the present invention, the upgrade of vehicles is limited to a small additional installation on the washing water tank, i.e. the addition of the secondary circuit.
The person skilled in the art will recognize that the amount of thermal energy that can be stored in the washing water container depends on the container volume or the amount of washing liquid contained therein. In this context, it is interesting to note that manufacturers will equip future vehicles with ever larger washer fluid tanks, as future generations of vehicles will have an increasing need for washer fluid. In fact, the required amount of washing liquid increases when the number of driver assistance devices such as cameras, LIDARs and the like increases in future vehicle generations and the optics of these devices have to be cleaned regularly to ensure that the driver assistance system is working properly. Of course, this means that the heat storage capacity will increase in future generations of vehicles and that, for the reasons mentioned above, an adequate filling level of the washing system must always be ensured.
According to particularly preferred embodiments, the heat management system or the secondary circuit is a coolant circuit, preferably both the heat management system and the secondary circuit are simple coolant circuits. Each of the coolant circuits includes a coolant pipe and a coolant flowing through the Coolant pipe circulates. Depending on the vehicle, each coolant pipe can only consist of one pipe section. Alternatively, each coolant tube can comprise a plurality of tube sections, the sections being in fluid communication with one another.
In such very simple embodiments, the coolant circuits of the thermal management system and the secondary circuit act as fluid-based heat exchangers without the need for further special heat exchanger devices. It goes without saying that the coolant circuits of the first and the second cooling system can be arranged and connected to one another in order to form a common cooling system. In alternative embodiments, the coolant circuits of the first and the second cooling system can be individual circuits that are thermally coupled by means of a special heat exchanger.
The heat exchanger of the secondary circuit can preferably be a simple coolant circuit pipe which leads through the washing water tank. The tube can be arranged in a spiral or twisted manner in order to increase the contact surface and thus to optimize the heat exchange in the fixed volume of the washing water tank. Since most electric and / or hybrid vehicles are already equipped with thermal management systems, the coolant circuit of the secondary circuit can simply be branched off from an existing circuit of the thermal management system and passed through the wash water tank, which makes upgrading existing vehicle platforms much easier.
As previously stated, the secondary circuit can be a coolant pipe that is branched off from a coolant pipe of the thermal management system and passed through the washing water tank, since this would make the heat exchange between the cooling system and the washing liquid optimal. A person skilled in the art knows, however, that any other configuration of the secondary circuit which enables heat exchange with the washing liquid can be used, for example arranging the secondary circuit in close contact with an outer surface of the washing water tank.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the washing water container can also be thermally coupled to other heat sources such as an engine and / or a fuel cell and / or to the power electronics of the vehicle. The motor can of course refer to the electric motor of the electric or hybrid vehicle or, in the case of a hybrid vehicle, to an internal combustion engine with which the vehicle is equipped. It is known to those skilled in the art that the thermal management system of a hybrid or electric vehicle further comprises a cooling system that is thermally coupled to the engine and / or the fuel cell and / or the power electronics in order to transfer heat to the engine and / or the fuel cell and / or the Replace power electronics. This cooling system is then preferably configured in such a way that it is in direct or indirect heat conduction relationship with the washing water container in order to exchange heat with the washing water container via the thermal management system.
In embodiments in which the thermal management system for hybrid or electric vehicles comprises a cooling circuit for the motor and / or the fuel cell and / or the power electronics, the control unit can be configured in a further mode to remove waste heat from the motor and / or the fuel cell and / or to conduct the power electronics to the washing water tank, the waste heat being stored in the washing water tank in the form of thermal energy. Preferably, no thermal energy would be lost during operation of the vehicle and the engine and / or fuel cell and / or power electronics would be cooled further, since part of the thermal energy generated by this component would be transferred to the washing water tank and stored in the washing liquid.
In addition, the control unit can preferably be configured in a further mode in order to conduct the thermal energy stored in the wash water container from the wash water container to a component to be heated. In other words, the control unit can be configured to release the thermal energy stored in the washing water container and in the washing liquid contained therein. In a preferred embodiment, the component to be heated is the drive battery. In cold ambient conditions, such as B. vehicle start-up phases in winter, or more generally under conditions in which the battery temperature is below an ideal operating temperature, the release of stored thermal energy reduces the electrical consumption of the drive battery and helps to maintain its range. In addition, the use of previously stored thermal energy to heat the drive battery, instead of electrical energy and / or fuel in the case of a hybrid vehicle, enables an increased electrical range and / or reduced consumption of primary energy, which reduces the vehicle's CO 2 footprint.
If the vehicle is equipped with a fuel cell, the control unit can preferably be configured in a further mode in order to transfer the thermal energy stored in the washing water container from the washing water container to the To conduct fuel cells in order to reach their operating temperature more quickly and at the same time to reduce the electrical energy requirement.
Alternatively, the vehicle component to be heated can be a driver's cab or a passenger compartment for accommodating a driver and possibly one or more passengers. At low temperatures, the need to heat up the passenger cell for safety and comfort reasons poses an additional challenge, as the electric heater puts a heavy strain on the battery capacity. Therefore, the reuse of previously stored thermal energy is extremely desirable in order to relieve the drive battery and maintain the range. In this variant of the invention, the thermal energy stored in the washing water tank can be released for a rapid heating process of the passenger compartment. Preferably, no electrical energy is used to generate heat and to heat the passenger compartment, thereby increasing the range of the electric vehicle and / or reducing fuel consumption in the case of a hybrid vehicle. Since the thermal energy stored in the washing water tank is immediately available under cold conditions to heat the passenger compartment, the comfort of the passengers is also increased.
One of the main advantages of the system is that heat is stored for a longer period of time, bridging the gap between heat generation and heat demand. A typical case would be a night cycle, in which the heat accumulated during the journey on one day is stored and reused in the morning of the next day when, for example, heat is required to heat the cabin. In order to reduce the heat loss of the washing water container over a longer period, it can be sheathed with a thermal insulation material. Any thermal insulation material with low thermal conductivity can be used, in particular any thermal insulation material with a thermal conductivity between 0.02 and 0.05 W / mK, but the washing water tank is preferably covered with natural fibers, mineral fibers, glass wool, polystyrene or polyurethane foam, possibly also with a radiation reflective layer. It is preferred to insulate an existing wash water tank in order to reduce heat losses without having to replace a new wash water tank. Alternatively, however, wash water tanks made of a material with low thermal conductivity and without an additional thermal insulation layer can be used. It should be noted that the use of an insulating layer of the washing water tank gives rise to some other structural advantages, such as a reduction in the noise radiation transmitted by the water pumps that are integrated in the washing water tank, which is easily understood by those skilled in the art.
It goes without saying that the present invention in a further aspect also relates to a method for thermal battery management of a hybrid or electric vehicle as described above. The method according to the invention comprises the step, if the temperature of the washing liquid contained in the washing water tank is lower than a specified maximum, causing the control unit to conduct the waste heat of at least one component that generates excess heat energy into the washing water tank with the washing liquid contained therein Storage of waste heat as thermal energy. This storage of the waste heat in the wash water tank can take place until the temperature of the wash water reaches the set maximum.
The component that generates excess thermal energy is preferably either the drive battery and / or a fuel cell and / or the motor and / or the power electronics.
In further embodiments, the method for thermal battery management of a hybrid or electric vehicle according to the invention can further comprise the step, if the temperature of the washing water container is higher than the temperature of a component to be heated, to cause the control unit to conduct the stored thermal energy from the washing water container to the component . The component to be heated can be, for example, the drive battery, the fuel cell or the passenger cabin of the vehicle. The step of releasing the stored thermal energy can be continued until an operating temperature is reached in the corresponding component and / or until all of the stored thermal energy has been released. As soon as this is the case, the heat management is preferably switched back to the step of discharging the waste heat to the washing water tank.
In other words, the method for thermal battery management of a hybrid or electric vehicle according to the present invention comprises two main phases. First, a heat storage phase occurs while the drive battery is being charged and / or while the vehicle is being driven. During this heat storage phase, excess heat energy that is generated during operation is removed from the drive battery, the motor and / or the fuel cell and / or the power electronics and stored as heat energy in the wash water tank. Such a heat dissipation also makes it possible to lengthen the fast charging mode of the drive battery, by supporting the active heat dissipation required to enable a fast charge mode. Fast charging should shorten the charging time of the drive battery to less than 30 minutes. This means that large amounts of heat output in the order of magnitude of 5 to 50 kW have to be dissipated from the drive battery and the charging electronics. In this mode, the vehicle thermal management system can use the additional heat capacity of the washing water tank to temporarily absorb this power and allow a longer period of time in quick charging mode, regardless of whether this heat energy is reusable or not, which e.g. depends on the outside temperature.
Second, a release phase can occur as soon as thermal energy has been stored in the wash water tank if the drive battery, the fuel cell, the passenger cell or another component of the vehicle needs to be heated. When the vehicle is started, instead of electrical energy and / or fuel, the stored thermal energy can be used to heat up all components that require heat, thereby increasing the range of the electric vehicle. As soon as the vehicle (i.e. the drive battery, the fuel cell, the passenger cabin or another component) has reached operating temperature, excess heat energy can be stored again, i.e. it can be accumulated in the washing water tank by switching back to heat storage.
Other advantages that are described in connection with the vehicle according to the invention apply in full to the proposed method.
