Description
The invention relates to a method for the electrochemical processing of electrically conductive workpieces such as bipolar plates for fuel or electrolytic cells according to
The corresponding structuring or contour of the forming surfaces of an embossing die or an embossing and/or forming and/or rolling tool for bipolar plates and/or bipolar plates for fuel or electrolysis cells is achieved by special processing steps such as grinding, milling, engraving or laser finishing or honing, the processes mentioned take a lot of processing time. In order to achieve a structuring or contour of the contact surface of an embossing and/or forming and/or rolling tool or a bipolar plate that is defined in terms of the number, size, depth and distribution of the depressions or elevations, attempts are made, among other things, to process this surface using a laser, in order to thereby to achieve the desired indentations/increases.
On the one hand, however, this procedure has the disadvantage that it is also very time-consuming if there are a large number of indentations or elevations, and in addition the incident laser beam not only produces an indentation or elevation on the surface, but also an elevation surrounding the indentation in the form of a ring, which is not desired in many cases and requires further post-processing to eliminate this bulge.
A further disadvantage is that the laser processing results in a spatially limited strong heating and subsequent rapid cooling, which leads to undesired new hardening zones.
For completely different applications, the machining process of the electrochemical removal process (ECM) is known, which is also used in a pulsed manner (PECM). This is used to create three-dimensional surfaces, for example the three-dimensional surface of turbine blades. By approaching a correspondingly negatively designed electrode to the surface to be machined, material is removed from this surface, which is possible with this process much more finely than, for example, with spark erosion (EDM). During the entire process, an electrically conductive liquid, the so-called electrolyte, is pressed through the gap between the tool and the workpiece to conduct electricity and transport the dissolved substances away.
The bipolar plates to be machined are made of a conductive material such as stainless steel, titanium, aluminum, polymeric carbon composites, or a conductive composite. The bipolar plates have a channel structure for the process medium and possibly flow channels through which a cooling fluid flows. The bipolar plates are made of a conductive material to conduct the electricity generated by the fuel cells from one cell to the next and out of the stack.
Such bipolar plates are sandwiched between two membrane-electrode assemblies (MEU) of a fuel or electrolytic cell. A so-called flow field is usually formed in a central area of the channel structure on the two end faces of a bipolar plate, in which the process media are separated from the active area of the neighboring MEU by a comparatively dense arrangement of the channels, which often have a meandering shape supplied or removed from this. The channel structure is connected to lines carrying process media in the fuel cell or electrolysis cell via a suitable inlet and outlet and suitable connections. Particularly high demands are initially placed on the materials used in the bipolar plate, which must ensure a long service life for the fuel or electrolytic cell under the often very aggressive environmental conditions. Furthermore, bipolar plates must be able to be manufactured as precisely as possible with regard to their external geometry in order to meet the tolerances to be maintained for efficient operation of the fuel or electrolytic cell. One only slightly Geometry of the bipolar plate that deviates from the desired shape can lead to compression of the sensitive and comparatively thin gas distribution structure of an adjacent MEA or to poorer electrical contact with the MEA. In the prior art, therefore, bipolar plates are mostly still produced from a single material composition. Expensive carbon (graphite) is used here, which is mixed with a plastic binder and brought into the desired shape in a suitable production process (milling, pressing, injection molding). In addition, metallic bipolar plates have also been developed, which have significant advantages due to their higher conductivity and are mechanically more stable than carbon. Furthermore, thinner and lighter bipolar plates can be manufactured from metal. However, these are also comparatively expensive to produce and can only be produced with the required precision with great effort. The selection of suitable materials for bipolar plates is not particularly large. On the one hand, such materials must have high electrical conductivity in order to guarantee the lowest possible resistance conductive connection between the membrane-electrode units adjoining the bipolar plate from different end faces, and on the other hand they must tolerate the ambient conditions in the fuel or electrolysis cell.
To a certain extent only the negative form of the other end is available for the channel structure on the one end. In addition, forming tools and forming methods for producing the required precision while maintaining extremely small tolerances are particularly complex and expensive for a metallic structure formed in this way.
Against this background, it is the object of the present invention to provide a novel method and a device for the production of bipolar plates for fuel or electrolysis cells which can be produced as simply and inexpensively as possible while ensuring the best possible electrical conductivity and a long service life.
The object of the invention is to accelerate and specify the processing of workpieces, in particular embossing dies or embossing tools for bipolar plates and/or bipolar plates for fuel or electrolysis cells, with surfaces to be processed using the ECM or PECM removal method.
This object is achieved with a device according to patent claim 1 and a method according to
According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, a structure, contour and/or profile is introduced into the workpiece surface as a result of the material removal.
A further embodiment provides that the workpiece is arranged below (anode +) and the electrode serving as a tool (cathode -) engages in the workpiece from above. Classic editing. The workpiece is exposed to the electrolyte for a significantly longer period of time during processing (increased risk of rusting).
A significant embodiment of the device according to the invention shows that the workpiece is arranged on top (anode +) and the electrode serving as a tool (cathode -) engages in the workpiece from below. The advantage of this solution is that the electrolyte comes into much less contact with the workpiece during processing. This reduces the risk of the workpiece rusting.
It should be mentioned that the contour to be processed using PECM is introduced directly. The tool can be arranged above or below (cathode -). Direct PECM processing depends on accuracy and cycle time requirements.
The contour to be processed using PECM can be introduced in combination with another process (hybrid). The tool can be arranged above or below (cathode -). In the case of machining with a hybrid process (PECM plus another process), PECM can be used both as a final structure or contouring and as a preliminary roughing process.
In addition to embossing matrices, embossing tool matrices and/or embossing tools for the production of bipolar plates, PECM processing of the structure, contour and/or profile can also be used for recordings for the precise positioning of BBP before a laser welding process.
The accelerated and precise surface processing is achieved by the processing method using electro-chemical removal processes (ECM), which is particularly efficient and thus manages with short processing times by - either during processing the distance between the tool and the workpiece is alternately increased and decreased by means of vibration, in particular by means of vibration of the tool, (PECM) and/or - the voltage application or current application of the tool is pulsating. Both measures, both individually and in combination, significantly accelerate the desired material removal, so that surface structuring with the help of these processes is much faster than with competing processes.
It has been shown that it is particularly advantageous if the distance vibration is carried out with a frequency of 0-100 Hz, better 0.0001-90 Hz, better 5-70 Hz, better 10-50 Hz and/or the current Pulsation is carried out with a pulse duration of 1 to 10 ms, better 2-4 ms and with pauses between the individual pulses, which are as short as possible, but at least correspond to the pulse duration. With a combination of vibration and pulsation, the pulses are applied in the state of closest approach between the tool and the workpiece. The vibration or mechanical oscillation of the tool can be used independently of the pulse technique, with the mechanical oscillation of the tool being able to be combined with direct current application of the tool or with pulsed operation (pulsating current application) of the tool. The potential can be applied with direct current up to a pulse duration of less than 0.5 ms, better 0.3-6 ms, better 0.5-10 ms, and/or the application of the potential with direct current with pause times can be less than 0 .5 ms, better with pause times of 0.001-0.5 ms.
Processing by means of ECM or PECM can include both surface processing of the surface of the embossing tool and/or the bipolar plate and the incorporation of many microscopically small indentations in the surface, or both work steps together. In order to make indentations in the surface of the embossing tool and/or the bipolar plate, the tool can stand still during processing, at least in the circumferential direction of the embossing tool and/or the bipolar plate, so that the elevations required for this on the effective surface of the tool do not have to be even smaller than the indentations to be made with it.
Flat processing can be done in different ways: either the effective surface of the tool can be at a sufficient distance from the surface of the embossing tool and/or the bipolar plate so that any structuring of the tool that may be present is no longer imaged on the workpiece because of the sharpness of the image becomes the lower the larger this distance is and eventually disappears completely.
The other possibility is to move the tool in particular in the circumferential direction, possibly also axially, relative to the workpiece, in particular with a feed of 0.05-2 mm/min, better with a feed of 0.1-1 mm/min. more preferably with a feed of 0.1-0.2 mm/min, which also eliminates the influence of elevations on the active surface of the tool and a surface can initially be achieved without depressions on the embossing tool and/or the bipolar plate.
Such a flat processing as a pre-treatment for the introduction of the structuring, i.e. the indentations, speaks for the fact that both the roughness can be adjusted and dimensional inaccuracies can be corrected and thus previously customary fine processing steps on the embossing tool and/or on the bipolar plate can be omitted. In this case, a material removal of a maximum of 30 μm, better only 20 μm, better only 10 μm, but in particular of at least 2 μm, is carried out, which is sufficient both for eliminating dimensional inaccuracies and shape inaccuracies. The minimum material consumption ensures that no surface areas remain unprocessed.
Since, as mentioned, the distance between the tool and the workpiece is changed in order to change the imaging sharpness of the surface structure of the tool on the workpiece, particularly in the case of a vibrating distance, the smallest distance during the vibration is changed in Depending on the desired sharpness of the image, the distance is usually chosen to be as small as possible for making the indentations, since this is the only way to ensure that the indentations are about as small as the corresponding elevations on the tool. A very effective compromise has proven to be that the tool is held at a distance of 5 µm to 400 µm, preferably at a distance of 10 µm to 100 µm, from the surface of the bearing point. It is even possible to process the entire surface over a large area and to introduce indentations in one operation.
The possibilities of fine machining according to the invention also make it possible to achieve a very efficient, possibly shortened, process chain for finishing embossing tools and/or bipolar plates: machining by means of electrochemical removal methods is preferably carried out immediately after machining with a specific cutting edge and further fine machining steps, such as grinding, avoided. If necessary, fine dry grinding can be carried out in between, in order, among other things, to produce the functional roughness desired for embossing tools and/or bipolar plates. After that, in particular, no further processing step should take place, but rather the embossing tool and/or the bipolar plate is then ready for use. If hardening of the surface of the embossing tool and/or the bipolar plate or coating with a hard layer is desired, this is carried out before the electrochemical removal process, in particular immediately before. Machining by means of electrochemical removal methods immediately after machining with a specific cutting edge is carried out to an accuracy of +/-50 μm, preferably a maximum accuracy of 10 μm, for the depth tolerance.
A machine for processing embossing tools and/or bipolar plates using electrochemical removal methods should preferably be a machine with an axis arrangement and workpiece spindle arrangement as in a lathe and with a controlled C-axis and, in particular, have at least one ECM or PECM tool unit that is used in all three Spatial directions is movable. The spindle and/or the machine axes, which can be moved and/or driven in all three spatial directions, can serve both to hold the tool and to hold the workpiece to be machined.
All the possible applications described apply both to the introduction of contours into embossing tools used for the production of bipolar plates (BPP) and to the processing of BBP directly as series parts. In addition, it is also possible to use the PECM process to process contours in recordings, e.g. for positioning BPP for laser welding, etc.
The invention is explained in more detail below using exemplary embodiments.
