Description
The present invention relates to a filter device for a ventilation device of a fuel tank of a vehicle and a buffer wall for such a filter device.
It is known that a vehicle's fuel tank must have a venting device. This is usually used to prevent a negative pressure in the fuel tank when fuel is taken out of an internal combustion engine. In the same way, an overpressure in the fuel tank must be compensated when the fuel tank is filled with new fuel via a filler neck or when an overpressure occurs in the fuel tank due to thermal expansion at hot outside temperatures. In cases of overpressure, it must be possible for gas to escape from the fuel tank. This usually takes place via a vent opening of a venting device into the environment. However, it must be ensured that an excessive escape of fuel vapors through this venting device is avoided. In known fuel tanks, these venting devices are therefore equipped with filter devices which are equipped with an adsorption material in order to at least partially filter out or adsorb fuel vapors before they escape into the environment.

A disadvantage of the known solutions is that the regeneration of the filter device is associated with disadvantages. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that a vacuum connection to the engine is usually provided for regeneration, through which air is sucked in from the filter device. If a vacuum is applied to such an engine connection, fresh air from a vent connection from the environment flows into the filter device and can thus be used to desorb the fuel vapor stored therein and convey it further into the engine connection. When the vacuum is applied, however, there is a risk that additionally or alternatively saturated fuel vapors from the tank connection are sucked back into the engine connection via a short route without going via the filter device. When this engine is operating, this means that regeneration can only be carried out for a very short time, since otherwise the regenerated gas flowing into the combustion engine via the engine connection would have a negative composition, which would have a detrimental effect on the combustion process. The use of so-called buffer walls in the area of the filter housing has the disadvantage that although this bypass of a direct overflow from the tank connection into the engine connection can be prevented, this same section within the filter device cannot be regenerated due to the buffer wall. The filter device must therefore be made larger because it can no longer be completely reset to a regenerated state.
It is the object of the present invention to at least partially remedy the disadvantages described above. In particular, it is the object of the present invention to prevent fuel vapor from overflowing into the engine connection in a cost-effective and simple manner and nevertheless to ensure a high regeneration capacity for the filter device.
Further features and details of the invention emerge from the subclaims, the description and the drawings. Features and details that are described in connection with the filter device according to the invention naturally also apply in connection with the buffer wall according to the invention and vice versa, so that with regard to the disclosure of the individual aspects of the invention, reference is or can always be made to each other.
According to the invention, a filter device serves as a ventilation device for a fuel tank of a vehicle. For this purpose, the filter device is equipped with a filter housing with a filter chamber which is filled with adsorption material for at least partial adsorption of fuel vapors. The filter housing has a tank connection for fluid communication with a fuel tank. The filter housing also has an engine connection for fluid communication with an internal combustion engine of the vehicle. In addition, the filter housing is equipped with a ventilation connection for fluid communication with the environment. In the filter chamber, a buffer wall is also arranged between the tank connection and the engine connection to prevent fuel vapors from directly flowing over from the tank connection into the engine connection. This buffer wall has at least one hole section with through holes with flow velocity-dependent flow resistance against the flow of fuel vapors.
A filter device according to the invention is based on known filter devices. Its primary purpose is to prevent fuel vapors from escaping into the environment when a fuel tank is vented. In normal operation, i.e. in venting mode, this means that in the event of excess pressure in the fuel tank, gas saturated with fuel vapors enters the filter device in gaseous form via the tank connection. As it flows through the filter chamber, this fuel vapor is at least partially retained in the adsorption material by adsorption due to the filling with adsorption material. When it exits from the vent connection into the environment, the gas is now at least partially purified of fuel vapors by this adsorption. It is preferred if the filter chamber is completely or essentially completely filled with the adsorption material.
As soon as the loading state of the adsorption material has exceeded a certain limit, there is a risk that the adsorption performance is limited or reduced and that fuel vapors could escape to a greater extent into the environment via the vent connection. In order to maintain the effectiveness and functionality of the adsorption material, a regeneration step is carried out at this point at the latest. In order to provide regeneration of the adsorption material, ambient air free of fuel vapors can now be sucked into the filter chamber and thus into the absorption material via the vent connection in the opposite direction. The suction takes place by applying a negative pressure to the filter chamber via the engine connection. The engine connection can be connected to the vehicle's combustion engine so that a negative pressure can be applied to this engine connection in a suction manner. As soon as this negative pressure is present, this negative pressure can spread via the adsorption material in the filter chamber. On the one hand, this negative pressure will cause ambient air to be sucked in, so that ambient air that is now free of fuel vapors flows into the saturated or at least partially saturated adsorption material. By equalizing the concentration, the adsorbed fuel is at least partially desorbed from the adsorption material, so that, conversely, the fresh air flowing through from the environment is now loaded with desorbing fuel vapor, the adsorption material is regenerated in this way and the loaded ambient air is fed into the vehicle's combustion engine via the engine connection.
At the same time, however, when the negative pressure is applied, this negative pressure will also be present at the vehicle's tank connection. Gas is sucked in from the tank connection by the same negative pressure, which is at least partially loaded with fuel vapors. This creates a combination of fresh air flowing through the vent connection and loaded air from the tank connection within the adsorption material.
In order to effectively prevent direct overflow in the form of a bypass between the tank connection and the engine connection, a buffer wall is now used between the tank connection and the engine connection according to the invention. This reduces the possibility of fuel vapors overflowing directly from the tank connection into the engine connection while avoiding flowing through the adsorption material. Instead, these air streams or gas streams loaded with fuel vapors introduced via the tank connection must completely circumnavigate the buffer wall and thus cover a certain minimum distance through the adsorption material.
According to the invention, however, this buffer wall is not completely closed, but is provided with at least one hole section. This hole section has at least two or more through holes. These through holes are provided with a free flow cross-section which has a defined flow resistance. The flow resistance is made dependent on the flow velocity by the choice of the hole diameter, as will be explained in more detail later by way of example. In particular, this involves a small or relatively small hole diameter of the individual through holes, so that at high flow velocities the through holes have a high flow resistance to flow through and thus a lower volume throughput through these through holes is possible. As soon as the flow velocity decreases, the flow resistance decreases, so that the volume flow of gas allowed through these through holes can increase.
Due to the flow velocity-dependent flow resistance situation at the through holes, a high pressure gradient between the motor connection and the tank connection will lead to a high flow resistance at the through holes immediately at the start of the regeneration process. This means that the buffer wall at the through holes has a blocking effect against a bypass between the tank connection and the motor connection due to this impulsive increase in flow velocity. As soon as the pressure gradient between the motor connection, the tank connection and the vent connection has reached an equilibrium situation, the flow speed through the adsorption material. At this point, the main flow with reduced flow speed now means that ambient air suitable for regeneration flows through the entire filter chamber and thus the entire adsorption material from the vent connection directly towards the motor connection and also indirectly through the through holes in the buffer wall to the motor connection. The inventive design of the hole section thus makes it possible, on the one hand, to avoid the undesirable bypass through the buffer wall between the tank connection and the motor connection and, at the same time, to be able to provide regeneration of this section of the filter chamber in the area of the tank connection by releasing a gas flow at low flow speeds.
It can be advantageous if, in a filter device according to the invention, the buffer wall is flush with a wall section of the filter housing between the tank connection and the motor connection. In particular, this is a wall section that can also be referred to as the base of the filter device, so that the wall between the tank connection and the motor connection has a sealed correlation with the buffer wall. This closure is in particular gas-tight or fluid-tight in order to prevent the described direct bypass between these two connections. The buffer wall can be formed separately from the filter housing and, for example, mechanically fixed or secured in this desired position.
It is also advantageous if, in a filter device according to the invention, the through holes of the hole section have the same or essentially the same hole diameter. In particular, the equality of the hole diameter is related to the same distance to the tank connection or the motor connection. This ensures that a uniform flow resistance can be provided for the entire hole section and in particular for the entire buffer wall. The same flow conditions therefore arise on the entire buffer wall with a uniform flow situation. The production of such through holes with the same or essentially the same hole diameter is also simplified.
It is also advantageous if, in a filter device according to the invention, the through holes of the hole section have a hole diameter that is smaller than the bulk porosity of the adsorption material. Bulk porosity is to be understood in particular as the gas-permeable free space between solid particles of the adsorption material. If the adsorption material is not a bulk material but a solid with pores, the bulk porosity is to be understood as the corresponding porosity of this solid, with particular consideration being given to the open porosity. This correlation makes it possible to keep the flow resistance in the adsorption material lower than that present on the buffer wall and in particular in the hole section.
Further advantages are achieved if, in a filter device according to the invention, the through holes of the hole section have a hole diameter in the range between approximately 0.5 mm and approximately 5 mm. This is a particularly simple and cost-effective size ratio for the hole diameter. Preferably, the individual through holes are equipped with the same or essentially the same hole diameters, as has already been explained.
It also has advantages if the tank connection and the motor connection are arranged opposite the vent connection in a filter device according to the invention. The vent connection is therefore preferably also arranged opposite the buffer wall. This arrangement improves the flow conditions, particularly for the regeneration phase already explained. Ambient air to be charged can flow from the opposite side of the vent connection in both directions and thus onto both sides of the buffer wall, i.e. in the direction of the tank connection on one side and in the direction of the motor connection on the other side, without the buffer wall offering any resistance to this inflow of ambient air to be charged.
It is also advantageous if, in a filter device according to the invention, the buffer wall has a length that is between 20% and 60% of the corresponding extension of the filter housing. The corresponding extension of the filter housing can also be understood as the length of the filter housing. The buffer wall therefore preferably does not extend over the entire length, but only over an area between a minimum length of approximately 20% of this extension and a maximum length of approximately 60% of the extension. This provides effective protection for the bypass described and at the same time a rapid regeneration capability for the regeneration process.
It may also be advantageous if, in a filter device according to the invention, the buffer wall is located between a first side wall section of the filter housing and a second side side wall section of the filter housing. The buffer wall preferably closes off at these two side wall sections. In particular, these two side wall sections close off at the wall section already explained between the tank connection and the motor connection, so that a pot-like arrangement of the motor connection and the tank connection is provided on the two different sides of the buffer wall. The lateral closure also prevents lateral flow and thus a lateral bypass around the buffer wall.
It is also advantageous if, in a filter device according to the invention, the buffer wall is arranged centrally or essentially centrally between the tank connection and the motor connection. This leads to identical or essentially identical flow conditions on both sides of the buffer wall. In particular, the overflow from the adsorption material into the hole section and on the other side from the hole section into the adjacent adsorption material is made more uniform or standardized in this way, so that the flow-related effect according to the invention can occur even more advantageously at the hole section.
The present invention also relates to a buffer wall for a filter device according to the invention. Such a buffer wall has at least one hole section with through holes with flow velocity-dependent flow resistance against the flow of fuel vapors. A buffer wall according to the invention therefore brings with it the same advantages as have been explained in detail with reference to a filter device according to the invention.
