Abstract
In a method for coating a metallic surface with a metallic material, in particular a noble metal, a layer with micro- and / or nanoparticles of the metallic material is applied to the areas of the surface to be coated. The layer is then sintered in a first processing phase with one or more energetic beams. The sintered layer is then completely melted in a second processing phase with one or more energetic jets to form a homogeneous layer of the metallic material and fuse to the surface. The method enables the production of a homogeneous coating with a metallic material firmly bonded to the surface.
Description
Technisches AnwendungsgebietTechnical application
The present invention relates to a process for coating a metallic surface with a metallic material, in particular a noble metal, in which a layer of micro- and / or nanoparticles of the metallic material is applied to one or more areas of the surface to be coated and subsequently processed with energy radiation is to make the coating.
The method is suitable inter alia for the coating of electrical contact surfaces with a noble metal such as gold. The gilding of electrical components is done so far by means of electroplating, PVD or CVD method, on the one hand to achieve greater electrical contact and Übergangsleitfähigkeiten on electrical contact surfaces and on the other hand, a lower corrosion. This achieves a reduction of the power loss and also of interference signals. The previous methods allow partial or complete gold plating of the components, but have a number of disadvantages. Thus, with these methods, a location-selective coating with gold only to a limited extent only at the electronically relevant points of the component. This results in increased consumption of gold and thus increased production costs. The use of the abovementioned coating processes sometimes requires large quantities of chemicals. These must be provided consuming and are partly harmful to the environment. PVD coatings require energy-intensive vacuum processes. PVD / CVD or electroplated gold or hard gold layers show low wear protection. They are scratched from the component surface by plug-and-pull processes, as they are necessary in the contact industry, and thus lose their function. An inline coating of the components with gold or other precious metals is not or only partially possible with the coating methods described above. This requires an interruption of the production line by additional removal or introduction of the components and thus leads to an increased production cost.
Stand der TechnikState of the art
Die entstandene Goldschicht blättert während des Laserprozesses vom Substrat ab.To avoid the above problem, it is known to apply micro- or nanoparticulate layers of gold on the metallic surface and then to sinter or melt by machining with laser radiation. However, the microparticulate gold layers are influenced by the so-called balling effect during continuous exposure to laser radiation. The gold contracts in the liquid state by the surface tension into balls, whereby the formation of a homogeneous gold layer is prevented. Also adhesion between the surface of the substrate and the solidified gold does not come about sufficiently. In the laser-based sintering of microparticulate gold layers in pulsed laser operation, in turn, only a slight adhesion between the substrate surface and the gold layer is produced. The resulting gold layer peels off during the laser process from the substrate.

The object of the present invention is to provide a method for coating a metallic surface with a metallic material, with which a solid, cohesive connection of the coating is achieved with the surface and which is particularly suitable for refining electrical contacts with noble metal layers.
Darstellung der Erfindung Presentation of the invention
The object is achieved by the method according to
In the proposed method, a metallic surface is coated with a metallic material, in particular a noble metal. For this purpose, a layer with micro- and / or nanoparticles of the metallic material is first applied to one or more regions of the surface to be coated. Preferably, for cost reasons, a microparticulate layer of the metallic material is applied. The application of the micro- and / or nanoparticulate layer can be carried out, for example, by means of doctoring, dipcoating, spin coating, pad printing or shaping printing processes such as ink-jet, pipejet, dispensers, etc. If the layer containing microparticles and / or nanoparticles contains further constituents, in particular solvents or dispersants and / or binders, these are preferably removed after application of the layer in a drying step and, if appropriate, a subsequent debinding step. The drying of the layer with micro- and / or nanoparticles comprises the evaporation of low-boiling fractions of the vehicle or transport medium of the micro- and / or nanoparticles. During debindering, the remaining portions of the vehicle of the micro- and / or nanoparticles are evaporated at higher temperatures.
The layer of micro- and / or nanoparticles is then first sintered in a first processing phase with one or more first energetic beams to obtain a sintered layer of the micro- and / or nanoparticles on the surface. The preferably carried out drying and / or debinding step can be carried out with energetic rays. The thus sintered layer is then completely melted in a second processing phase with one or more second energetic jets to form a homogeneous layer of the metallic material and fuse to the surface. The first and second energy beams, in particular laser beams, are guided in the two processing phases in each case with scanning movements over the layer with the microparticles and / or nanoparticles or the sintered layer. The first and second energetic beams can originate from the same beam source or from different beam sources. The sintering process of the first processing phase with pulsed energetic radiation and the melting process of the second processing phase with continuous energetic radiation are preferably carried out.
The multi-stage machining process with the energetic radiation avoids the above-mentioned disadvantages when coating a metallic surface with a metallic material. Thus, by completely melting the layer with the microparticles and / or nanoparticles in the second processing phase, a homogeneous layer, i. a layer in which a particulate structure is no longer present due to complete fusion of the particles, and a fusion-metallurgical bonding of the layer to the surface material is achieved. This leads to a firm connection of the coating with the surface. The problems of balling occurring in such a processing are avoided by sintering the layer with the microparticles and / or nanoparticles in the preceding first processing phase, whereby these are fixed to one another and to the surface.
In the proposed method, the layer containing the microparticles and / or nanoparticles of the metallic material is preferably applied to the surface as a paste, in particular by means of a printing process by which the paste is applied in a location-selective manner only to the areas of the surface to be coated.
The method makes it possible to coat a metallic surface with a noble metal layer, for example for finishing electrical contacts. In particular, in such an application there is the possibility of applying the noble metal in a cost-effective microparticulate form, so that costs are saved compared to methods which require application in nanoparticulate form.
In a preferred embodiment, pulsed laser radiation is used for the sintering step in the first processing phase and continuous (continuous wave: cw) laser radiation is used for the melting step in the second processing phase. Thus, the techniques of selective laser sintering and selective laser melting are used. Alternatively, other energetic beams, for example electron beams or ion beams, can be used for the two processing phases.
The process can be carried out in different variants. Thus, in one variant, the entire functionalization process of the applied layer with the micro- and / or nanoparticles can be carried out with energetic beams, in particular laser beams. The applied layer is for this purpose with at least one first dried and debinded energetic beam of a beam source, and then sintered with at least one energetic beam of a beam source and melted with at least one energetic beam of a beam source. The beam sources used may or may not be the same.
In a second variant, the drying of the initially applied layer with the microparticles and / or nanoparticles takes place by means of a process interposed between the application, for example printing, and the subsequent further functionalization process, for example by means of a VCSEL module, IR radiator, flash lamp, plasma treatment, Hot air jet, oven or induction heater. The subsequent treatment process with the energetic rays then includes debindering and sintering and melting of the layer. Also, this same or different beam sources can be used.
In a third variant, drying and debinding are carried out by a process interposed between the application and the subsequent further functionalization process. This can in turn be done for example by means of VCSEL module, IR radiator, oven, or induction heater. The subsequent energetic beam machining process then includes sintering and melting the deposited layer using one or more beam sources.
With the proposed multi-stage process, a homogeneously fused with the surface layer of the metallic material and thus a sufficient adhesion between this layer and the surface material is achieved. The undesirable effect of balling is bypassed by the step of sintering the layer in the first processing phase. The procedure is inline-capable. It is not necessary to remove and insert components to be coated from the production line. The use of chemicals is significantly reduced compared to CVD processes. Environmentally harmful electroplating processes are avoided. Energy-intensive vacuum coating processes are also avoided. The selectivity of the process prevents the use of excess precious metal resources when coating with precious metals. Overall, the production costs are thus reduced. The layer geometries can be adapted from component to component. This is particularly advantageous in the increasing variety of products or semi-finished products with ever smaller batch sizes. The set-up times in the production are shortened and individualized mass-produced products can be produced on-demand.
The method is particularly suitable for the production of noble metal layers on surfaces of other metals, for example for the selective contact gold plating. A preferred technical field of application is thus the site-selective contact refinement of electronic components as well as the selective finishing of objects with noble metal layers, in particular gold layers. Such layers can also be used for site-selective or areal corrosion or wear protection. The method can be used for coating two-dimensional as well as three-dimensional components. If necessary, non-noble metal layers can also be applied by the method.

Wege zur Ausführung der ErfindungWays to carry out the invention
In one exemplary embodiment, a laser system with a wavelength of λ = 1062 ± 3 nm is used for laser processing. This laser system is used in the present example for both processing phases of the process. For this purpose, the gold paste is applied to the surface with a layer thickness (gold particle on substrate) in the dried state of d S = 12.4 ± 1.6 μm. The particle size is 1.48 μm (median). The drying process is done in an IR stretch or. an IR oven at 280 ° for ten minutes. The final binder already takes place with pulsed laser radiation, the following processing parameters being used: energy density E P = 3.4 J / cm 2 , pulse duration t p = 7 ns.
The following process parameters were selected for the subsequent sintering with a pulsed laser beam. The energy density was E P = 5.5 J / cm 2 with a pulse duration of t p = 7 ns.
For the second processing phase of the cw laser beam melting, a laser beam intensity of I = 4.4 MW / cm 2 was selected at a scan speed of V SCAN = 2000 mm / s.
Die Schichtdicke der aufgebrachten Metallpaste liegt vorzugsweise bei < 100 µm.The above values represent only a concrete embodiment and are selected depending on the properties of the materials involved and the thickness of the layers to be produced. This applies in particular to the laser and scan parameters. The wavelength of the laser radiation is chosen so that it is completely or partially absorbed by the substrate or constituents of the applied metal paste. It can therefore be chosen in a very wide wavelength range, for example between 100 and 11000 nm or even higher. The particle size of the metal particles used is not critical. Preferably, however, the primary particle sizes are in the range <10 microns. The layer thickness of the applied metal paste is preferably <100 microns.
