Description
The invention relates to a surface coating composition, a process for its preparation and its use.
For a wide variety of technical applications, not every material has all the necessary properties right from the start, especially with regard to its surface properties. Only surface coatings often lead to the desired properties, such as optimal slip and anti-adhesion properties or protection against corrosion associated with a noble appearance.
Surface coatings may, for example, be designed as a coating, vapor deposition or powder coating, wherein the coated materials may be very different in their properties, such as. Galvanized steel, aluminum, die-cast aluminum, iron, steel, stainless steel, hot-dip galvanized steel, zinc die-casting, plastics, glass or wood.
For example, spraying, dipping and painting of paints and varnishes, vacuum metallization, PVD and plastic coating (plastic coating with or without plasma pretreatment), sputtering, electron beam evaporation are known. The coating can be carried out under atmospheric conditions or under vacuum.
Surface coatings may, for example, be designed as functional coatings based on fluoropolymers, metals, plastics, ceramics and powder coating and serve for corrosion or wear protection. They can also be designed as decorative coatings, as non-stick, sliding or traction coatings.
Surface powder coatings are produced by powder coating or powder coating, a coating process in which an electrically conductive material is coated with powder coating.
- • Zwischentrocknungszone,
- • elektrostatische Beschichtungszone und
- • Aufschmelz-, Aktivierungs- und Vernetzungs- Zone,
- Surface treatment zone (cleaning and / or applying a conversion layer)
- • intermediate drying zone,
- • electrostatic coating zone and
- Melting, activation and crosslinking zone,
Typical substrates for powder coating are steel, galvanized steel and aluminum.
The main field of application is the general metal coating, the coating of household appliances, the coating of facades and furniture as well as the painting of cars.
The powder coating layers produced typically have layer thicknesses between 60 μm and 120 μm.
The powder coatings used for powder coating consist of dry, granular particles, which are between 1 and 100 microns in size.
Chemically, the powder coatings based on epoxy or polyester resins, or they are based on polyamide (nylon), polyurethane, PVC or acrylic. Furthermore, hybrid systems are known which contain both epoxy and polyester resins as binders.
Depending on the composition, the particles of the various powder coatings tend to sinter, i. They are sensitive to temperature and begin to melt and stick at temperatures above 50 ° C.
So that the powder to be coated can be applied to a usually pretreated surface, it must first be transported to the spray gun, usually a flat jet nozzle.
Typically, the powder is conveyed from the fresh powder package into a container where it is captured. From there it gets to the gun. It is important that the promotion is gentle, so that the properties of the powder are not significantly affected. The powder coating particles are first fluidized in most delivery methods, so that the powder coating can be promoted. Sometimes additional stirrers or vibrating elements are used. If the powder is conveyed directly from the original container, only a local fluidization takes place.
When conveying the powder, a distinction is made between precision conveying (50 to 500 g / min - supply to the spray gun) and mass production (usually more than 5 kg / min - transport of the powder coating between two containers).
The uniform, accurate and pulsation-free dosing is done by precision and Stabinjektoren. Precision injectors convey a defined amount of powder from the container to the gun and there ensure that the total amount of air is kept constant by adding dosing air. at Stabinjektoren no fluidization is necessary because the suction takes place at the bottom of the container.
One method that can be used for precision as well as for mass production is the so-called digital dense phase flow (DDF), which works on the principle of backpressure conveying. Back pressure conveying means the alternating suction of vacuum and powder coating in two chambers. In this method, no fluidization is necessary. At the same time, little conveying air is required for accurate dosing.
In electrostatic powder coating, an electrically charged powder cloud is first generated. The particles of the same name are transported to the workpiece surface. There they beat down, adhere electrostatically and form the powder coating layer. It is possible to charge by high voltage (corona charging or ionization) or friction [triboelectric (short Tribo) or electrokinetic charge].
By the same name charge the powder coating particles or adhering to them air ions repel these and form a uniform powder coating cloud. This follows the field lines of the electric field. Powder coating particles thus reach the rear side of the workpiece, as a result of which a coating also takes place there. Cavities and trailing edges, however, are not or only weakly coated according to the Faraday cage principle.
Each ionized particle impinging on the workpiece generates a counter charge at the moment of impact with the workpiece. Due to the attraction between both charges, the particles adhere to the workpiece. Due to the charges of the same name, the film formation is very uniform. To prevent the powder from falling, it is necessary that the electrical attraction (Coulomb's force) between particle charge and counter charge be greater than gravity. This requires a high electrical resistance of the coating powder, since the discharge is otherwise too fast. The coating is capable of adhesion for up to a few hours before the powder falls off by gradual charge equalization.
The cross-linking process, the so-called sintering or baking, begins with the melting of the powder coating in the dryer. The viscosity of the system initially decreases and goes through a minimum. The further the crosslinking process progresses, the higher the viscosity becomes. It has been found that the best course is achieved when this viscosity minimum is reached quickly. The minimum is more pronounced in this case and the surface of the paint becomes smoother. When the optimum baking conditions of the paint system are exceeded, this begins to decompose.
Typical powder coating plants are equipped for drying with continuous dryers, which can be clocked or continuously charged.
By contrast, chamber dryers can be charged in batches and are not bound to cycle times. It is used with varying stoving conditions, which may be necessary due to different material thicknesses, different stoving times or the use of different powder coating types.
The dryer is heated indirectly via heat exchangers or directly by the admixture of hot gases (gas stoves). The latter, however, makes additional demands on the paint system (gas oven stability), as well as on the purity of the heating gas. The reason for this is the possible reaction of nitrogen oxides from the heating gas with powder coating components, which can lead to intense yellowing. Most of the powder coating is therefore stabilized with antioxidants.
The heat transfer by IR radiation can be used in the coating of thin-walled, flat objects. It achieves a faster energy transfer and is therefore better to control, faster ready for use and allows a significant space savings. In the case of different, simultaneously baked objects or complex shapes, on the other hand, a high temperature difference is generated at different points of the object, which is due to the uneven radiation distribution (shadow).

Among the new types of bioplastics, which have been gaining in importance for some time, are the thermoplastic starch (TPS), which, as a biopolymer in which the starch granules used as raw material are destructed, is assigned to starch polymers because of their raw material base.
Thermoplastic Starch (TPS) is typically one of the components used to make starch-based bioplastics because of its negative water-holding properties. The second basic component of these plastic blends consists of water-repellent, biodegradable polymers such as polyesters, polyester amides, polyurethanes or polyvinyl alcohol. A plastic blend is therefore composed of two phases, from the continuous and hydrophobic (water-insoluble) Polymer phase and from the disperse and hydrophilic (water-soluble) starch phase. The starch-based material content can be between 25 and 70%. During the melting process in the extruder, starch phase and plastic phase combine to form a water-resistant starch plastic. Depending on the field of application, starch blends and compounds are developed and produced individually for their further use in the plastics processing industry. As granules, they can be processed on the existing equipment into films, thermoformable flat films or injection molded articles. Examples include tote bags, yoghurt or drinking cups, plant pots, cutlery, diaper films, coated papers and cardboard.

In addition to these starch-containing polymer blends are still starch esters as TPS starch esters are chemically modified starches, which are used industrially so far only as a food additive.
Example by heating with acetic acid (acetylated starch, starch acetate, E 1420), C6-C26 fatty acids, succinic acid, adipic acid (acetylated distarch adipate E 1422) and citric acid or its salts or activated derivatives.
The calorific power of starch esters is greater than native starch and the derivatives of starch esters have a good freeze-thaw stability for frozen pizza.
In addition, they are used as thickeners and stabilizers for baked goods, dry soups and sauces, puddings, frozen foods, heat-sterilized preserves and margarine.

For this purpose, in carboxylic acid starch ester reaction mixtures, ethylenically unsaturated compounds or mixtures thereof are grafted onto the starch ester by means of aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution with simultaneous presence of acetic anhydride, the amount of acetic anhydride at least being sufficient to react with the hydrogen peroxide added and in the hydrogen peroxide decomposition resulting amount of water.
Also by chemical modification, such as the conversion to starch esters or starch ethers with a high degree of substitution, starch can be modified thermoplastically. However, because of the associated high costs, these methods have not yet been implemented on an industrial scale.

A disadvantage of this technical solution is u.a. in that they need plasticisers. These are not firmly anchored in the material and may, for example, lead to undesirable side reactions in the coated material or in the coating-containing fillers.

By means of variable metering, these additives enable a specific change in the material properties of the so-called thermoplastic starch, adapted to the intended use.

In the thesis of Torsten Jordan at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, publicly defended on 18.12.2013, entitled: "Thermoplastic Dextran and Starch Esters: Synthesis, Characterization and Application in Photochromic Laminated Glass Systems" becomes the synthesis thermoplastic starch and dextran esters presented with new property profiles.
Dextrans and various native starches (potato, pea, amioca starches, etc.) are disclosed as substrates.
The new improved properties of the biopolymer esters, such as, for example, defined melting behavior, transparency of the melts, DS-dependent release behavior or good biocompatibility, result from the new, gentle conversion method in imidazole melts.
The resulting properties of the Biopolymerester are adjustable by varying the parameters polymer backbone, degree of substitution and type of substituent.
The imidazole acts as a trifunctional reagent in the synthesis. In addition to the newly established functionality as a starch solvent, the heteroaromatic also acts as a base and after "in situ" activation of the carboxylic acid derivative used as a reactive intermediate (Carbonsäureimidazolid).
For esterification reactions in Imidazolschmelzen carboxylic acid chlorides, carboxylic anhydrides and carboxylic acids can be used as reagents.

The disadvantage of this surface coating is that the starch ester-containing mixtures must be applied by extrusion as a film on surfaces, which u.a. As a result, geometrically more complex objects can not be coated.
In the application of conventional paints for the coating of geometrically complex objects in turn solvents are required, which is associated with an impairment of the environment or complex protection systems.
The object of the present invention is to provide an alternative to the known surface coating surface coating composition, which avoids the above-mentioned disadvantages of the prior art and also allows a coating of geometrically complex objects.
The process for the production of this surface coating to be created is intended to be particularly suitable for the use of mobile coating systems in order to enable the treatment of small-scale and complex spatial form surfaces on site, for example in the restoration and preservation of cultural goods.
According to the invention this object is achieved by the features of the 1st, 4th and 6th claim, in particular the characterizing features. Further favorable embodiments of the invention are specified in the subordinate claims.
The essence of the invention is that the surface coating composition comprises a substance derived from a renewable natural product.
This substance is particularly advantageously at least one modified thermoplastic starch ester, wherein the starch ester in powdered form (discrete particles) is applied to a substrate by means of electrostatic charging and subjected there to a heat treatment process according to powder coating processes known per se. (In the context of the invention, however, it is also the case that this substance is present as a mixture of various modified thermoplastic starch esters.)
This modified thermoplastic starch ester (s) has at least one ester component having from 2 to 18 carbon atoms and a degree of substitution of from 1.0 to 3.0, wherein the starch ester (s) is / are in the form of discrete particles,
This surface coating is obtained according to the invention by providing a surface coating composition containing a mixture of starch ester particles, which is applied to a substrate by means of a powder coating system.
To this end, the surface coating composition is applied to the substrate in powdered form by means of electrostatic charging, and then the thus coated substrate is heated to a temperature at or above the T g of the starch ester to melt the particles and form a continuous film on the surface of the substrate ,
Particularly advantageously, the starch ester particles of the surface coating composition have a particle size of <100 μm, since this size has a favorable influence on the static charge and leads to the formation of smoother, more homogeneous layers.
As substrates to be coated with the surface coating composition, metals, glass, plastics or natural materials such as stone or wood may be used.
- • it is repeatedly melted,
- • It is transparent, but it can also be colored. The coating material is water-repellent,
- • it is anti-slip and
- • It is optically and technically modifiable, ie it can be supplemented with particles to change the optical, chemical and physical properties.
In particular, by the use of special, mobile coating systems, the treatment of small-scale and complex-type surfaces is possible and useful.
This is an advantage, for example, in the processing of artisan products or the restoration of cultural goods.
However, the surface coating compositions and the method for applying them to the surface of a substrate are in principle also suitable for the treatment of large areas.
In particular, the treatment of glass and other transparent materials is the focus of potential applications due to the transparency produced by means of the composition and method.
The preservation of the appearance, for example of wood, stone or metal surfaces is within the scope of the invention.
The surfaces coated with the surface coating composition can be glued together by a further downstream temperature treatment process and also be repeatedly detached from one another.
- • Schmelztemperatur 50 - 255 °C
- • Viskositäten (Kartoffelstärke-Ester) 5,2 - 13600 Pa*s (bei 120 °C)
- • die Viskositäten für bspw. Dextrane können signifikant niedriger sein
- • E-Modul: von 20 bis 1500 MPa*s
- • Zugfestigkeit: bis 50 MPa
- • Rissdehnung: bis 190%
- • Melting temperature 50 - 255 ° C
- • Viscosities (potato starch esters) 5.2 - 13600 Pa * s (at 120 ° C)
- • The viscosities for, for example, dextrans can be significantly lower
- • E-modulus: from 20 to 1500 MPa * s
- • Tensile strength: up to 50 MPa
- • Crack elongation: up to 190%
The invention will be explained below with reference to the embodiments, without being limited to these examples.
The surface coating process is carried out with modified thermoplastic starch esters in powdered form.
Synthese eines Stärke-Esters:Synthesis of a starch ester:
First, the starch to be used is dried in vacuo at elevated temperature. This is mixed in powdered form with solid imidazole. The mixture is melted and mechanically mixed until complete dissolution of the starch. The corresponding carboxylic acid is added to the reaction in activated form (e.g., as anhydride, acid chloride or vinyl ester) and the solution is further stirred until the reaction is over the melting temperature. After completion of the reaction, the crude product (meaning degrees of substitution in the range of 1.5-3.0) are cleaned with ethanol or isopropanol followed by water and dried in vacuo.
Herstellung eines Pulvers aus Stärkeester Granulat:Preparation of a powder of starch granules:
The starch ester is first cooled and then mechanically, e.g. by means of a planetary mill, crushed. Thereafter, a sifting out of the material takes place in order to obtain powders in the desired grain size (values of <100 μm are meaningful). Insufficiently shredded material can be used for further grinding operations.
Beschichtung eines Objektes mittels Stärkeester Pulver:Coating of an object by means of starch ester powder:
The powder can be applied by conventional powder coating techniques. The burning in of the powder takes place via its softening temperature, but below the decomposition temperature. Ideally, work is carried out at a temperature which is about 20 K above the specific softening temperature (eg 146 ° C. for corn starch palmitate, DS = 1.94).
Synthesebeispiel (Kartoffelstärke-Laurat):Synthesis Example (potato starch laurate):
The native potato starch is dried for 2 h at 100 ° C under vacuum. Subsequently, this starch (30 g) and imidazole (270 g) are mechanically mixed and melted at 120 ° C. The melt is stirred at 100 ° C per KPG stirrer for 4 h to ensure optimum solution of the starch. At the same temperature, vinyl laurate (96 mL) is added slowly in three portions at 20-minute intervals. Thereafter, the mixture is stirred at 100 ° C for a further 20 min. After the reaction, 200 mL of boiling ethanol are added to the reaction solution. The gel-like mixture is cooled to 0 ° C. in a beaker with the addition of a further 1350 ml of ethanol. The resulting whitish precipitate is allowed to settle and the supernatant is aspirated. The resulting doughy mass is washed 4 times with 500 mL of ethanol at 0 ° C and washed twice with 500 mL of water and filtered through a Buchner funnel. The product is thoroughly comminuted with every wash. After storage of the product in the freezer (which takes place over 1-2 days), the product is freeze-dried.

The resulting gel-like mixture is cooled to 0 ° C. in a beaker with addition of a further 1000 ml of ethanol.
The resulting whitish precipitate is allowed to settle and the supernatant is aspirated.
The doughy mass is washed 4 times with 300 mL of ethanol at 0 ° C and washed twice with 300 mL of water and filtered with suction through a Buchner funnel.
