Description
The invention relates to self-healing polymers which are crosslinked by at least one reversible urethane bond, their preparation and use, for example as construction materials or as coating materials.
Self-healing polymers are already known. These materials are able to partially or completely heal mechanical damage and thus at least partially regenerate the original material properties. They are therefore particularly suitable as a coating material to prevent corrosion occurring or make it difficult. Furthermore, applications as a construction material are possible.
From an economic point of view it is crucial that self-healing polymers are synthetically readily accessible and that it is possible to repair damage (healing) under relatively simple conditions.
Vitrimerartige polymers, also called vitrimers, are polymers which behave like a thermoset at room temperature, so form a highly crosslinked polymer. By increasing the temperature, reversible groups present in the polymer are split, as a result of which a partial dissolution of the polymer network takes place, thereby softening the material. This allows a variety of properties, such as a slight thermal processability or the possibility of recycling, which is not possible with ordinary thermosets.
Known self-healing polymers can basically be subdivided into two types. On the one hand there are extrinsic and on the other hand intrinsic self-healing polymers. In the case of extrinsic healing, a cure is needed which must be present in a reservoir in the polymer matrix. This embedding can be done in different ways.
The concept of intrinsic self-healing is based on the ability of a material to crack without additional encapsulated healing agent. For this, however, reversible chemical processes are necessary to enable a cure.
Here, however, the actual urethane bond is not involved in the reversibility of the bond, it merely increases the reactivity of the exchange reaction.
The invention is based on the object of providing polymers with a significantly reduced opening temperature of the urethane bond, for example with an opening temperature of 150 ° C. or below.
The invention is also based on the object to provide self-healing polymers with vitrimeren properties.

These electron-poor compounds of the formula II, in particular those of the formulas IXa, IXb or IXc, can be used for the preparation of self-healing polymers, in particular of polymer networks. For this purpose, it is possible to crosslink with isocyanate groups or thioisocyanate functionalized polymers, such as polyacrylates, polymethacrylates or polyacrylamides, using low-electron aromatic amino or hydroxy compounds by means of urethane thiourethane or urea bonds. Crosslinking can also be achieved by reacting monomers or comonomers functionalized with isocyanate or thioisocyanate groups, for example 2-isocyanatoethyl acrylate and / or 2-isocyanatoethyl methacrylate, with electron-poor aromatic amino or hydroxy compounds and subsequent polymerization. Further, cross-linking can be achieved by reacting compounds functionalized with a plurality of isocyanate or thioisocyanate groups with electron-deficient aromatic amino or hydroxy compounds.
Preferably, these monomers functionalized with isocyanate or thioisocyanate groups and electron-deficient aromatic amino, thiol or hydroxy compounds are reacted with further comonomers.

Vorzugsweise setzt man Acrylsäure- bzw. Preference is given to using acrylic acid or methacrylic acid esters or acrylic or methacrylic acid amides and corresponding mixtures thereof. These compounds should be selected so that self-healing of the derived copolymer is possible. For this purpose, the homopolymers prepared from these comonomers should have a lower glass transition temperature than the temperature required for self-healing of the copolymers.

Particularly preferred further comonomers are alkyl esters and alkylamides of acrylic acid and of methacrylic acid. Both branched and unbranched alkyl esters or amides of any chain length are possible. Furthermore, it is also possible to use polyalkylene glycols, such as ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol and relatively long-chain polyethylene glycols, and their unilateral ethers as comonomers.

The polymers and polymer networks generated in this way have the ability to self-heal. By this is meant in the context of this description that the polymers and polymer networks on the one hand are able to close cracks, and on the other hand are able to regenerate the mechanical properties of the damaged material. This could be proven by tensile test. In addition to self-healing, it is also possible to thermoplastically process these polymers, regardless of whether they are polymer chains or polymer networks. Despite its thermoset nature at room temperature, the polymer networks have a thermoplastic behavior at higher temperatures. These polymer networks can therefore be assigned to the class of vitrimers. This is evident, for example, from the distinctly lower viscosity that could be detected by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA).

Thermomechanische AnalyseThermomechanical analysis
The mechanical properties determined by rheology (temperature dependent). Here, a softening of the polymer is observed above 0 ° C, indicating vitrimerartiges behavior.
Selbstheilung des PolymernetzwerksSelf-healing of the polymer network
