Abseits des Gebietes der Verfahren zum Testen von Wasseraufbereitungsanlagen ist es bekannt (Autor: Gertrud Katarina Osman-Sigg; Dissertation an der Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule Zürich der Nr. 6986 und des Titels: „KOLLOIDALE UND SUSPENDIERTE TEILCHEN IN NATÜRLICHEN GEWÄSSERN; PARTIKELGRÖßENVERTEILUNG UND NATÜRLICHE KOAGULATION IM ZÜRICHSSEE“; 1982), dass die Anzahl der Partikel in Abhängigkeit des Durchmessers durch folgende Exponentialgleichung beschrieben werden kann:
- ΔN(dp) =
- dp =
- Partikeldurchmesser (µm)
- A =
- Konstante der Partikelgrößenverteilung
- ΔN (d p ) =
- Number of particles with diameter between d p and d p + Δd p per cm 3
- d p =
- Particle diameter (μm)
- A =
- Constant of particle size distribution
The double-logarithmic representation of ΔN (d p ) / Δd p versus d p gives, regardless of the total number of particles, a straight line with the slope m = ca. 3.5, for all sea depths and all seasons (page 114 the dissertation). The only figure which refers to the known state of the art (page 8 of the dissertation) illustrates this.

This object is achieved by the features of claim 1.

- a) preparation of a test water from a raw water, such that the raw water is a deionized water or a water from a drinking or service water line,
- b) adding 10 to 1000 mg / l of solid particles to the raw water, such that the admixed solid particles 5 to 50% by weight of kaolinite particles and 30 to 90% by weight of quartz particles, and that the admixed solid Particles have a particle size distribution as follows:
- ◯ at least 7% by weight of the solid particles have a diameter of 1.0 to less than 3.0 μm,
- ◯ at least 9% by weight of the solid particles have a diameter of 3.0 to less than 6.0 μm,
- ◯ at least 9% by weight of the solid particles have a diameter of 6.0 to less than 10.0 μm,

- ◯ at least 3% by weight of the solid particles have a diameter of 40.0 to less than 70.0 μm.
- c) using the test water obtained according to steps a) and b) for testing a water treatment plant.
Kaolinit verursacht starke Trübungen in natürlichen Oberflächengewässern.
- Due to the specified particle size distribution of the admixed solid particles, a natural particle size distribution can be achieved, so that the test water has a particle size distribution corresponding to that of a natural surface water due to the stated particle size distribution of the admixed solid particles. This enables a robust assessment of water treatment plants.
- • That test water can be produced reproducibly. Tests using the test water can be performed reproducibly.
- • The naturally occurring turbidity loads in surface waters are adjusted to the raw water by adding 10 to 1000 mg / l of solid particles.
- The solid particles have 5 to 50% by weight of kaolinite particles and 30 to 90% by weight of quartz particles. Kaolinite particles and quartz particles are major constituents of the solid particles of natural surface waters.
- • The suspended solid particles of the test water are insoluble, do not swell and thus ensure a high stability of the particle size distribution and thus a long usefulness of the test water.
- • The benefits of kaolinite particles are due to the properties of kaolinite: kaolinite is a clay mineral found in natural waters. Kaolinite has no swelling properties in the water compared to other clay minerals. This preserves the particle size distribution in the water. Kaolinite causes severe turbidity in natural surface waters. Kaolinite has strong covering occupancy properties due to the molecular platelet structure. Kaolinite is virtually insoluble in water, thus the particle size distribution in the water is maintained.
- • The advantages of the quartz particles used result from the properties of quartz: Quartz is a mineral that occurs in natural waters. Quartz has strong abrasive properties, quartz is highly soluble in water, thus preserving the particle size distribution in the water.
Admixing of chemicals such that the following ion concentrations are obtained:
- 2 to 400 mg / l calcium ions,
- 1 to 1000 mg / l magnesium ions,
- • 1 to 10000 mg / l sodium ions.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the preparation of the test water also includes the following step:
Admixing of chemicals such that the following ion concentrations are obtained:
- 15 to 240 mg / l of bicarbonate ions,
- 1 to 17000 mg / l chloride ions,
- 7 to 3000 mg / l sulphate ions,
- • 0.5 to 17 mg / l silicon ions.
Due to the two aforementioned embodiments, the test water in summary has a natural surface water ion concentration. The ions ensure that natural particle agglomerates are formed by interfacial chemical interactions with the particles.
- • Magnesiumsulfat,
- • Magnesiumchlorid,
- • Calciumchlorid,
- • Calciumcarbonat,
- • Natriumoxid,

- • magnesium sulfate,
- • magnesium chloride,
- Calcium chloride,

- • sodium oxide,
- Silica,
- • sodium bicarbonate.
These chemicals for producing the test water are easy and inexpensive to obtain.

- ΔN(dp) =
- dp =
- Partikeldurchmesser (µm)
- A =
- Konstante der Partikelgrößenverteilung
- m =
- ΔN (d p ) =
- Number of particles with diameter between d p and d p + Δd p per cm 3
- d p =
- Particle diameter (μm)
- A =
- Constant of particle size distribution
- m =
- Exponent in the particle size distribution exponential function and at the same time the slope in a double logarithmic representation of ΔN (d p ) / Δd p versus d p

The pH is in the range of pH 6.5 to pH 8.5, because the pH of surface waters is also in this range and the pH decisively influences the interfacial charge of the particles.
In contrast to deionized raw water, a water from the drinking or service water line already has ions. Therefore, fewer chemicals must be used to adjust ion concentrations when raw water is used in drinking water or service water. However, the use of water from the drinking water or service water at the expense of reproducibility.
The following is a description of how the term diameter of a solid particle is defined: By diameter of a solid particle is meant the diameter of a sphere which has the same volume as the volume of the solid particle.
- 1. A 3-liter beaker is filled with 2 liters of bidistilled water.
- 2. The water is held constant at about 20 ° C via a hot plate or a cooling bath.
- 3. Weigh out 113 mg of calcium carbonate with the aid of a measurement analysis scale and transfer it to the beaker.
- 4. Furthermore, 0.10 ml (100 μl) of sodium silicate glass (27% SiO 2 , 8.1% Na 2 O) are added.
- 5. The milky suspension is stirred and gassed with CO 2 until the conductivity of the solution no longer changes.
- 6. 22.4 mg of sodium bicarbonate and 28.5 mg of magnesium sulfate are added to the beaker.
- 7. The solution is stirred until the salts have dissolved.
- 8. Air is injected to adjust the pH to 7.4.
- 9. The beaker is filled with 22.4 mg of magnesium chloride and 7 mg of calcium chloride.
- 10. The solution is stirred until the salts have dissolved.
- 11. For a test water with a turbidity value of 40 FNU, 100.5 mg "Tonmehl Variante 2" (manufacturer: KSL Staubtechnik GmbH) and 49.5 mg "Arizona Staub ISO 12103-1 A4 coarse" are added. For a test water with a turbidity value of 200 FNU, add 502.5 mg "Tonmehl Variante 2" and 247.5 mg "Arizona Staub ISO 12103-1 A4 coarse". The dusts and the mixing ratio were chosen so that in the suspended state a particle size distribution with a gradient value m between 4 and 4.5 is established. For the selection of the dusts and the choice of the mixing ratio, laboratory experiments and mixing calculations were carried out in advance.
- 12. The beaker is made up to three liters with double-distilled water and stirred particle-gently, so that the particles are just kept in suspension.

- • The slope m is characteristic of the particle size distribution.
- • In rivers, the particle size distribution and therefore the slope m remains largely constant with increasing or decreasing particle concentration.
- • In a river water, particles in the size range of 1-70 μm make up the majority of the total particle mass. Furthermore, it is known that the particles of the diameter of 5 - 30 microns form the largest proportion of the total particle mass.
- • The particle size distributions in natural surface waters with a size range of approx. 1 - 70 μm (Hint: our claim 1) can be approximately described with a slope value m from 2.6 to 4.5. The test water according to the embodiment, which was produced by laboratory, has a slope value m, which is in the range between 4.0 and 4.5.
