In a solid electrolyte assembly comprising at least one oxygen ion conducting solid electrolyte membrane disposed between two electronically conductive means of solid state materials, the two electronically conductive means are disposed on the anode and / or cathode side spaced apart from the solid electrolyte membrane and the ionized gas spaces formed between the electronically conductive means and the solid electrolyte membrane filled.
Description
The invention relates to a solid electrolyte arrangement, at least comprising an oxygen-ion-conducting solid electrolyte membrane arranged between two electronically conductive means of solid-state materials, and a method for the production thereof.
In such arrangements, the high conductivity of oxide ions in solid fluoride-structure oxides is exploited, with the solid oxides separating as membrane two spaces having different oxygen partial or oxygen equilibrium pressures (further oxygen pressures). Such solid oxide ion conducting devices are used in a number of important applications, such as in high temperature fuel cells (SOFC), zirconia lambda probes, for hydrogen and oxygen recovery, or in potentiometric and coulometric oxygen probes.
In such arrangements, on the side of the higher oxygen pressure (cathode side), oxygen enters the membrane with the inclusion of electrons. On the opposite side (anode side) the oxide ions are released from the solid electrolyte leaving the electrons behind. This leads to electrical charge on both sides, causing the oxide ion flow to a standstill. The resulting electric potential difference between the anode and the cathode follows a thermodynamic fundamental law in this de-energized state, which is expressed in the Nernst equation, and is proportional to the logarithmic difference of the oxygen pressures. This potential difference is the basis for oxygen potentiometry with oxide ion-conducting solid electrolytes. If, on the other hand, the anode and cathode potential are short-circuited via a resistor, a current flows. This is the basis of the fuel cell principle. It is also possible to apply a DC voltage to the solid electrolyte from the outside, then oxygen is transported from the electrically negative to the positive side regardless of the oxygen pressures on both sides of the solid electrolyte membrane. In this way, coulometric applications as well as the cleavage of oxygen-containing gas molecules or oxygen generating devices using the oxide ion-conducting solid electrolytes work.
In the applications mentioned, an electron-conducting compound must be produced both on the cathode side and on the anode side. For this purpose, electronically conductive electrodes are applied on both sides of the solid electrolyte membrane, such as, for example, porous platinum layers. The electrode layers are connected via metal leads or interconnectors and - depending on the purpose - more or less large resistance connected.

- Platinum for oxygen sensors (potentiometry), for coulometry and voltammetry and for zirconia lambda probes; for the cathode of the fuel cell complex oxide perovskites, for the anode Cermet Ni-ZrO 2 and for the high-temperature steam electrolysis of metallic, ceramic, metal-ceramic heaps, beds or melts (
DE 102005017727
The cathode materials used in the fuel cell are primarily perovskites, such as manganates and cobaltites. Here is a wide range of compounds under discussion, such as Ruddlesden-Popper type oxides.
As a solid electrolyte material, cubic stabilized zirconia has largely established.
The focus of the development work is the improvement of the electrode materials. The main criteria of today's electrode materials are an expansion coefficient adapted to the solid electrolyte and the chemical compatibility of electrode and solid electrolyte material as well as the gas components. An unadjusted Expansion coefficient leads to mechanical stresses in the solid electrolyte assembly, to deformation and delamination of the electrodes to cracking. Lack of chemical compatibility causes the failure of the electrodes.
- • Fixed electrodes deposited directly on the solid electrolyte membrane reduce the electrochemically effective area for the reduction of the oxygen (cathode) or reaction of the fuel with the oxide ions (oxidation of the oxide ions, anode). This reduces the area capacity of the membrane.
- • The thermal expansion of electrolyte and electrode material is more or less different and leads to mechanical stresses up to the detachment of the electrode material.
- • For the gases to reach the electrochemically effective three-phase boundary, the electrode must be porous. At the working temperature of the arrangements, sintering processes often take place, which reduce the porosity.
- In the case of porous platinum as the electrode material, it is disadvantageous that oxygen practically does not diffuse through the material. An oxygen-coated solid electrolyte surface therefore can not participate in the electrochemical reactions. Only the three-phase boundary solid electrolyte platinum gas becomes electrochemically effective. Another disadvantage is the high price of the material.
- Nickel is used as the anode material in fuel cells and the Ni-ZrO 2 cermet (30% by volume Ni) is used to equalize the expansion coefficients. Ni is chemically sensitive to impurities in the fuel gas (especially sulfur), leads to carbon deposits in hydrocarbons in the fuel gas, tends to oxidize at higher oxygen partial pressures and is harmful to health. Therefore, attempts are made to use Ni alloys with Cu and other metals or mixed perovskite-type oxides (susceptible to reduction).
- • The cathode material used is primarily perovskite-type manganites and cobaltites, which tend to react with the solid electrolyte to degrade electrode kinetics. New developments use Ruddlesden-Popper type oxides, which have a high ionic conductivity and thus somewhat alleviate the loss of the solid electrolyte surface due to the electrode covering. For all mixed oxides, the adjustment of the expansion coefficients is a problem.
It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a solid electrolyte arrangement of the type mentioned, which eliminates the problems associated with the electrodes such as mechanical stresses by unmatched expansion coefficients or chemical incompatibility between electrodes and solid electrolyte membrane and between electrodes and gas components. For such a solid electrolyte assembly and a method for their preparation should be specified.
- • The solid electrolyte surface is not partially sealed by the applied electrode materials and is thus fully available for the electrochemical reactions.
- • Aging phenomena, such as sintering and phase changes at the electrodes, are excluded.
- • Diffusion polarization during transport of the oxygen species to the solid electrolyte surface does not occur.
- • The electrochemical reaction - recharging the oxygen, the oxygen ions - takes place directly on the solid electrolyte surface.
- • Poisoning phenomena of the electrode material due to foreign substances in the fuel gas such as sulfur or carbon deposits do not occur.
The solid electrolyte arrangement according to the invention can be used for all applications described in the prior art.
The ionization of the oxygen-containing and the fuel gas can be done in different ways. For this purpose, high-energy radiation, electromagnetic fields as well as particle flows come into consideration. For use in Solid electrolyte assemblies may only ionize the gas and the solid electrolyte surface. Penetrating high-energy radiation such as γ or β radiation are therefore out of the question. On the other hand, the photons or particles must have an energy of at least 5 eV in order to ionize a gas particle.
For solid electrolyte applications are preferably α-rays in question, since the energy of a particle is a few MeV and thus a high ionization density in the gas and on the solid electrolyte surface is achieved. Their range in gases at atmospheric pressure is a few centimeters, in solid electrolyte a few microns. Presumably, the solid electrolyte surface is also electronically conductive by the radiation, which seems to have a positive effect on the catalytic action of the solid electrolyte material on the reduction of the oxygen at the anode or on the oxidation of the oxide ions at the cathode.
A range of isotopes are available on α-emitters such as 241 Am (half life 432 a, α energy 5.5 MeV), 226 Ra (half life 1600 a, α energy 6 MeV) or 238 Pu (half life 87.7 a , α-energy 5.6 MeV). The isotope 241 Am has proven itself in the mass application of smoke detectors. Due to radiation protection requirements, the application of the α-emitters below 100 kilobecquerel (kBq) should be limited in individual cases in general applications. Gas ionization achieves values that can cover a range of solid electrolyte applications. These are primarily potentiometric measuring arrangements, which measure largely currentless, in particular when obtaining thermodynamic data by using high-impedance amplifiers. These potentiometric applications also include zirconia lambda probes. Of course, high-current applications with a higher inventory of α-emitters are feasible. So could be a SOFC with a stocking of 10 mg of 238 Pu / cm 2 (corresponding to 6.34 x 10 9 Bq / cm 2) are equipped. The released radiant heat of 5 mW / cm 2 is used simultaneously to keep the operating temperature of the SOFC. The coupling with an isotope battery, as used in space, is possible.
A promising noncondensed medium for the electronic conduction from the solid electrolyte to a condensed electron conductor (anode, cathode) is gas in the plasma state. In a hot plasma, the ions and electrons take over the electrical conduction. Hot plasma can not be used because of the high temperatures.
In the low-temperature plasma, the electronic conductivity is apparently only taken over by the electrons without the participation of the ions. The low-temperature plasma can be generated by various methods and effects: dielectric barrier discharge, plasma jet, corona discharge, microwave excitation, electron beam, ion source, radio frequency discharge, spark discharge, DC discharge, glow discharge, arc discharge, or a gliding arc.
In the following, the solution according to the invention will be explained in more detail on the basis of exemplary embodiments, which are based on different methods for producing the ionized gas.
