Description
The present invention relates to a device, an arrangement and a method Apparatus for obtaining phytoplankton (microalgae), comprising a housing of soil, sidewalls and ceiling, which is flowed through by a nutrient solution, parallel aligned, spaced-apart plates, which inside of the housing are alternately fixed to the floor and to the ceiling, so that a vertically meandering flow of the nutrient solution is formed and lighting means which bring artificial and / or natural light into the interior of the housing.
Microalgae, which is to be understood in the following by light-influencing microalgae, that is phytoplankton, have very diverse applications and therefore allow in their importance more and more increasing economic uses. For example, algae have a very high content of minerals and trace elements, vitamins, unsaturated fatty acids and a high carbohydrate content that make them very suitable for use as a food or food ingredient. They are also often used as additives in cosmetics or because of their high nutritional content in medicine and in pharmacy as dietary supplements, where they are used in addition to the addition as a component as a material for the production of capsules. For example, the freshwater algae Chlorella Vulgaris, which has been especially tested in the context of the present invention, contains the minerals calcium, zinc, iron, selenium, as well as all essential amino acids and many unsaturated fatty acids. Of further interest from the environmental point of view is the CO 2 consumption of photosynthetic microalgae, ie phytoplankton, since they allow fixation of carbon dioxide. This results in an additional economic utilization option with regard to emissions trading with CO 2 certificates. Another application is the production of biofuels or hydrogen.
The advantage of cultivating algae compared to cultivating crops in the countryside is the high yield per hectare and the low water consumption. In addition, they are not in competition with the breeding of plants because they can also be cultivated where no agriculture would be possible, so they take the production itself no area. Since cultivation is possible without the use of ground surface and under various gravitational conditions, microalgae are also an interesting locally produced food or dietary supplement for space travel. Another application is the use of certain types of algae in medicine for binding and discharge of heavy metals ,
One problem in the economic exploitation of the diverse potential that algae possess is their efficient large scale production. Previously known devices for culturing and propagating microalgae, also referred to as photobioreactors, use carbon dioxide and sunlight for photosynthesis for growth and propagation. An algae-containing nutrient solution flows through these bioreactors in glassy, sun-shining tubes. Due to the necessary growth time in the, without light concentration, limited specific light emission of algae either very many reactors must be connected in series or the nutrient solution are passed through the bioreactor many times.
Devices equipped in this way already improve significantly the distance of the nutrient solution which is possible for a given reactor length. However, at a given volume flow through such equipment equipped a certain, for the production of algae available area is not optimally exploitable. You could increase the vertical dimensioning of the photobioreactor, but that's the way it works technical limits set that the necessary wall thickness of the bioreactor housing must increase linearly with the maximum pressure and thus the height. Thus, high reactors would be very heavy and therefore expensive and unwieldy in the installation. In addition, it should be remembered that accessibility for maintenance, cleaning or repair work on the bioreactor is no longer given from a certain height.
A simple widening of the bioreactor would lower the flow rate at a given volumetric flow, and would not significantly increase the distance traveled by an individual phytoplankton alga. Furthermore, it also follows from the essentially laminar flow in the bioreactors known from the prior art that uniform mixing of the nutrient solution and the phytoplankton present therein is not ensured in every case. It could happen that in some areas of the nutrient solution, especially in those that pass closer to the light-emitting plates, the phytoplankton growth is accelerated and the nutrient solution so that the nutrients present therein is consumed faster than in other areas of the nutrient solution. Although a certain mixing is ensured by the deflection at the highest or lowest point of the meandering flow, it is not necessary to a sufficient degree, depending on the volume flow, the width of the photoreactor and the distance between the plates.
The present invention has therefore taken on the task of finding a plant for the production of microalgae (phytoplankton), which allows a higher yield per unit area of the plant without increasing the manufacturing cost of the plant and continue to ensure good accessibility of all parts for maintenance, repair - And / or cleaning purposes allows.
We solves this problem by an apparatus according to
As an essential feature of the device and arrangement according to the invention in this case is the subdivision of the housing interior of the bioreactor in several laterally adjacent chambers to see, which communicate with each other via openings at their ends in fluid communication. In connection with the vertically and parallel aligned and longitudinally spaced plates, which are at least partially used for the introduction of natural and / or artificial light, results from the inventive design a meandering in both the vertical and horizontal direction flow through the Photobioreactor according to the invention. Thus, with the base area present, the path to be traversed by the nutrient solution is maximized and, at the same time, due to the partially turbulent flow, in particular in the horizontal deflection regions, optimum mixing of the nutrient solution is ensured.
If more than one of the devices according to the invention is used in the arrangement according to
In order to implement the inventive concept of a series connection by horizontal positioning and vertical staggering, the devices do not necessarily have to be linearly one behind the other. For better space utilization, other arrangements can be selected. The prerequisite for this is that the outlet and inlet openings are positioned accordingly.
The maximization of the distance is to be seen in this context under the constraint of a predetermined, desired volume flow. A useful base shape of the device according to the invention is a rectangle. The question arises as to what aspect ratio the two sides of the rectangle should have relative to each other. Here are several factors to consider. The most versatile applicability is ensured by a square base. Because, provided the necessary inputs u. Outlet openings are present, possibly even multiple times, squares can most efficiently cover a common available floor space. However, devices with an aspect ratio of 2: 1, that is two united squares, are also advantageous versatile, without leaving any unused free space.
From a process engineering point of view, it makes the most sense if the device according to the invention or the arrangement using it is operated as a so-called "open circuit", that is to say that after a single pass of the arrangement the nutrient solution is at least part of a separation device, in particular a centrifuge, is supplied. This requires a minimum number of control engineering operations. In contrast, in a closed mode in which the nutrient solution passes through the device several times before the microalgae are separated off, after a certain number of passes, a valve or a branch must be switched, so that the nutrient solution is passed to the separation device. In this case, a periodic active intervention is necessary. In the so-called open circuit, however, such active intervention can essentially be omitted.
It would thereby dimensioned the route through the plant so that the desired algae saturation of the nutrient solution is reached after only a single pass the system. After leaving the last of the series-connected devices, the saturated nutrient solution would then be discharged via a pipeline in which there is a branch, from where part of the nutrient solution is passed to the separation device and another part, together with the algae contained therein, as seed for Start the next cycle again in the inlet opening of the first of the series-connected devices running. The nutrient solution brought to the separation device is in this case returned to the main circuit after separation of the microalgae produced, possibly again mixed with CO 2 and / or nutrients, or possibly introduced directly into the inlet opening of the first device according to the invention.
In order to control the algae production of the plant, this means, on the one hand, that the entire delivered power or the volume flow through the system and the ratio of the volume flow branched off into the separation device to the volumetric flow pumped back directly into the device must be available. If the production is started with a small number of algae, no nutrient solution would be conducted into the separation device at the beginning, but would be pumped back completely in the main circuit into the inlet opening of the first device connected in series. Only when measurements of the output nutrient solution confirm that a certain threshold of algae concentration has been reached would the separation of algae be started and the fraction diverted for separation slowly increased as the output algae constellation increases until a desired equilibrium value has been established.
If due to any disturbance, for example, a supply of nutrients or a short failure of the light supply, the algae concentration on the output side fall below the desired equilibrium value, the volume flow conducted to the separation system would be correspondingly reduced until the desired equilibrium state is restored.
It must be emphasized here that this so-called "open" cycle is only open to the microalgae, but that the nutrient solution cycle is closed, at least to a large extent. In addition to simplifying the control of the production process, this so-called open farm also offers the benefit of higher algal production per time, as no re-pumping of the algae solution is needed to re-run the plant. During this pumping back through, usually, opaque pipelines, there is essentially no further algae growth. This time is therefore an undesirable "dead time" for algae production.
In addition, the open operation can also avoid the passage of algae-rich nutrient solution through a pump in which part of the algae inevitably dies. Although this yield-reducing effect can be minimized by using a correspondingly algae-friendly pump, for example a screw pump, it can never be completely avoided with repeated circulation. Since the mortality rate increases with the concentration and in open operation only nutrient solution with much lower algae concentration has to be pumped back into the first device of the arrangement, it is also possible to use a more efficient pump to drive the fluid circuit. The algae-friendly properties of the internal structure of the pump are not as important as in a closed circuit with multiple passes of the system. It is only necessary that enough algae be available at the beginning of the next run to reach the desired final concentration.
Advantageous development of the present invention, which can be implemented individually or in combination, if they do not mutually exclude obvious, will be presented below.
Preferably, the device according to the present invention has a rectangular base, in particular one with an aspect ratio of 2: 1 or 1: 1, that is, a square.
Furthermore, legs are preferably attached to the underside of the device, in particular at least four legs in the case of a rectangular base area. By varying the leg length of various devices, the vertical staggering of the inlet or outlet opening of directly successive devices can be ensured when connecting several devices according to the invention in series. From the last serially connected device emerging nutrient solution is preferably collected by a suitable collecting means, in particular a funnel, which conducts the nutrient solution in a pipeline.
The inlet opening of the device according to the invention preferably has a rectangular cross section and is introduced into the ceiling. The outlet opening likewise preferably has a rectangular cross-section, but is located in the upper region of a side wall of the device, in particular bordering the ceiling with a longer side. The width of the outlet opening and inlet opening should be chosen so that the emerging from the outlet opening nutrient solution flow flows through a free cascade without losses in the inlet openings of the subsequent devices. In order to ensure the latter, it may be necessary to apply further fluid guidance means, e.g. a spout at the bottom of the outlet opening. Furthermore, it is necessary for a lossless crossing that the width of the outlet opening is greater than or at least equal to the width of the inlet opening.
Outlet opening and inlet opening can be arranged on opposite end faces of the device according to the invention. However, they may also be present at adjoining or even at the same side of the device. In addition, it is particularly preferred if in each case a plurality of outlet and inlet openings are present, which can be closed liquid-tight with closure means, so that the respective active (n) outlet or inlet opening can be selected depending on the arrangement of the device according to the invention. If several outlet openings are active, a branching of the circuit takes place. This may be useful, for example, if one wishes to provide different growth conditions in the various branches, in particular with regard to the spectrum of the introduced light.
On the division of the housing interior of the device according to the invention by means of longitudinal partitions in laterally adjacent chambers addition, the present invention proposes to insert lateral partitions through which the interior of the device according to the invention is divided into longitudinally one behind the other chambers. This has the advantage of allowing a greater freedom in the positioning of the outflow and inlet openings and on the other additional horizontal direction changes of the flowing nutrient solution with further improved mixing.
In addition to the main circuit of the inventive arrangement consisting of series-connected devices according to the invention and a pump with corresponding supply lines, a separation device for separating the microplankton from the nutrient solution and a further device for re-enriching the nutrient solution with nutrients and / or CO2 are preferably present. The branching of the secondary flow guided by the separation device from the main flow through the pump is in this case preferably the direction of flow in front of the pump. The re-enrichment of the nutrient solution is preferably carried out either in the secondary stream after the separation of the microalgae or in the main stream upstream or downstream of the pump.
The method according to the invention for operating the plant for obtaining phytoplankton according to the present invention is accordingly preferably supplemented by the steps of branching off a secondary stream from the main stream of the nutrient solution and feeding this secondary stream to one of the nutrient solution and, depending on the situation, returning the nutrient solution to the main stream or directly into the inlet opening of the first of the series-connected devices, or indeed an "open", in which the nutrient solution is not reused after the separation of the algae. Furthermore, the method according to the invention proposes, in a further step, to enrich the nutrient solution again with nutrients and CO 2 in order to enable phytoplankton growth in the next run. This can preferably be done either after the separation of the algae in the secondary stream, after the reunification of main and secondary stream but before the pump or after passing through the pump.
The terms "main flow" and "secondary flow" are not intended to imply any statement about the volume flow conditions. Separation does not necessarily take place, i. the secondary flow can be zero. On the other hand, it is also conceivable in the extreme case that the complete algae-saturated nutrient solution flow is passed through the separation device, ie the main flow is switched off. This would be useful, for example, if the system is to be emptied before a maintenance or repair. Then, one would usually like to previously harvest all the algae in the nutrient solution, i. abseparieren.

The operation of this arrangement according to the invention is preferably carried out in the so-called "open" cycle, in which after only one pass through the plant already the desired microalgae concentration is reached and thus the system can be driven with a constant flow ratio of main to secondary flow. A so-called closed circuit in which the nutrient solution with microalgae repeatedly passes through the series connection of photobioreactors, of course, is also feasible and would be to start the system from a state in which very few microalgae in the nutrient solution are also the preferred mode. This is applied until output measurement of the microalgae concentration confirms that a desired threshold concentration is reached and the sidestream can be ramped up slowly to its optimal equilibrium level.
