Description
The present invention relates to a method for signal transmission in ophthalmological devices, in which analog, possibly polarization-dependent light signals are to be converted and transmitted in a robust manner from a measuring head to an external control and evaluation unit.
The huge amounts of data mean that the acquisition and processing electronics are becoming increasingly complex and extensive. Increasing sampling rates, additional shielding, increased construction volume, increasing problem of heat dissipation, reinforced or additional supply lines, etc. inevitably lead to the increasing weight and volume of the measuring heads making exact positioning, as well as their panning and tilting, increasingly problematic.
The implementation of the acquisition and processing electronics in the measuring head of such complex ophthalmological devices is therefore increasingly being avoided and ways of data transmission are being sought.
The company ZEISS offers optical coherence tomographs that include 3D image display and analysis functions and provide extremely detailed images so that problem-free diagnoses of the course of the disease are possible.
Carl Zeiss Meditec AG offers a comprehensive viewing and diagnostic system in a single system with the CIRRUS™ photo. The system combines a fully equipped fundus camera for mydriatic/non-mydriatic imaging with the proven CIRRUS HD-OCT technology into a compact and extremely versatile system. The CIRRUS™ photo provides a wide variety of options for comprehensive medical diagnostics of the retina or the back of the eye. Data from high-resolution volume scans and macular thickness representations as well as RPE and ILM segmentations can be related to high-quality color, autofluorescence and fluorescein angiography images of the fundus, so that a more comprehensive clinical evaluation can be achieved.
In addition to a retinal photography function that is based on a high-quality non-mydriatic fundus camera and achieves extremely detailed images, the CIRRUS photo from ZEISS also includes analysis functions that also allow user-friendly assessments of diagnostic data using a normative database.
In addition, the combination of the scanning technology of an optical coherence tomograph or a confocal scanner with traditional photographic imaging allows the discovery and treatment of retinal and corneal diseases thanks to a variety of analysis functions and scanning protocols.
Since other devices, such as the TOPCON 3D OCT 2000, signal detection takes place in the measuring head, this is designed to be correspondingly complex. The disadvantage here is that large data buses are required to transmit the measurement signals, which impair the mobility of interfaces between the device parts and are difficult to shield so that they do not have a disruptive effect on other technical devices through electrical or electromagnetic effects (electromagnetic compatibility, in short: EMC).
In contrast to the device from Topcon described above, signal detection with the CIRRUS™ photo does not take place inside the measuring head, but outside it. Rather, the measurement signals are transmitted via fiber to the signal detection located outside the measuring head.
The disadvantage here is that position-dependent polarization influences of the very sensitive measuring light can occur when the measuring head is moved. In order to avoid signal changes or losses, position-dependent polarization influences should be compensated for or at least limited.

According to the invention, the remote workstation with imaging system and CPU unit has an interface device which is operatively connected to the inpatient patient area via a line. In addition to electrical or wireless communication channels, optical fibers are also provided as cables.
The disadvantage of this solution is that the signals obtained are transmitted without conversion. At distances of up to 1,000 meters, special measures are required to minimize interference on the transmitted signals.
Numerous solutions are known from the prior art, which deal in particular with the transmission of data.

The present invention is based on the object of developing a method for signal transmission in ophthalmological devices, in which analog and polarization-dependent light signals are to be transmitted from the measuring head to an external control and evaluation unit. The signal transmission should be immune to interference and equally suitable for different measurement signals.
The object is achieved in the method according to the invention for signal transmission in ophthalmological devices, in which the analog measurement signals are transmitted fiber-optic from the measuring head to the external control and evaluation unit and the analog measurement signals are digitized in the measuring head before their fiber-optic transmission and converted into a light signal that an additional light signal is transmitted from the measuring head to the external control and evaluation unit, which is used to check the condition of the fiber-optic transmission.
According to the invention the task is solved by the features of the independent claims. Preferred further developments and refinements are the subject of the dependent claims.
The proposed method is intended for signal transmission in ophthalmological devices, in which analog and polarization-dependent light signals are transmitted from a measuring head to an external control and evaluation unit. In principle, however, the method is suitable for any measuring device in which the discrepancy shown in the prior art between constantly increasing amounts of data and limited installation space plays a role.
The invention is described in more detail below using exemplary embodiments.
In the proposed method for signal transmission in ophthalmological devices, the analog, partly polarization-sensitive measurement signals are transmitted via fiber optics from a measuring head to an external control and evaluation unit, the measuring head being movable relative to the control and evaluation unit. According to the invention, the analog measurement signals are digitized and converted in the measuring head before their fiber-optic transmission and an additional light signal is transmitted from the measuring head to the external control and evaluation unit, which serves to check the state of the fiber-optic transmission.
All light signals (obtained via interferometer, spectrometer, fundus camera), etc. are digitized and transmitted via fiber optics and further processed in the external control and evaluation unit, which can include evaluation, processing, comparison with existing data, display and storage.
A particular advantage is that the analog measurement signals are polarization-independent after digitization. This means that no measures need to be taken to actively compensate for polarization changes resulting from the movement of transmission fibers, e.g. using polarization paddles or wave plates.
According to the invention, the analog measurement signals have wavelengths of 800nm or 1060nm depending on the measurement task to be solved. In contrast, wavelengths around 1,310nm or 1,550nm are used for fiber-optic transmission, which take advantage of the dispersion properties of the glass fibers, which are favorable for signal transmission.
The advantage here is that the sensitive measurement signals in the measuring head are converted into a robust optical data signal, while the complex data evaluation takes place outside the measuring head. The high-capacity optical data bus used for data transmission is less susceptible to electromagnetic interference (such as radio signals) and does not emit electromagnetic interference signals.
As already mentioned, different light signals are transmitted to the external control and evaluation unit for further processing.
For this purpose, it is advantageous if different, preferably predefined, evaluation algorithms are triggered and processed in the external control and evaluation unit depending on the transmitted type of measurement signals.
In a further embodiment of the method, the optical data bus used for data transmission is also used to transmit signals from the external control and evaluation unit to the measuring head. These can be, for example, scan patterns, measurement routines, control signals or similar.
In another embodiment, data derived from the measurement signals after they have been digitized are transmitted and used for error correction.
According to the invention, the measurement signals can be transmitted after they have been digitized with a data bandwidth that exceeds the bandwidth of the measurement signals before they have been digitized.
A further embodiment provides that two interference-capable measurement signals are caused to interfere, one or more resulting measurement signals are detected by means of balanced detection, digitized and transmitted from the measuring head via fiber optics. For this interference capability before detection, the measurement signals must have sufficient coherence (temporal and spatial). Examples are optical measurement signals which are obtained, for example, by a fiber-optic beam splitter from a tunable light source (swept source) and can be caused to interfere again, for example, by means of a fiber-optic coupler. Because of the polarization sensitivity of these signals, the polarization state of these optical measurement signals must be adjusted relative to one another, for example by a specific fixed fiber layer or active polarization-changing means, such as moving fiber loops (paddles) or means for generating fiber birefringence.
In this context, it is also possible for two non-interference measurement signals to be individually detected and digitized and converted into light signals, but transmitted together from the measuring head via fiber optics. Non-interferential signals do not have sufficient spatial or temporal coherence to produce detectable interference. Examples are light signals at different wavelengths (e.g. 830nm and 1060nm),
According to a final embodiment of the method, the fiber-optic transmission of the measurement signals takes place after they have been digitized in movable fibers.
The solution according to the invention provides a method for signal transmission in ophthalmological devices, with which analog and polarization-dependent light signals are transmitted can be transmitted to an external control and evaluation unit using a measuring head. The signal transmission is not susceptible to interference and is equally suitable for different measurement signals.
What is particularly advantageous in the proposed method is that the analog, polarization-sensitive light signal is converted into a robust, polarization-independent light signal by digitizing it.
