The beam guidance system has a beam input for receiving a laser beam to be guided to a workpiece and a polarization state-adjusting element for providing a first polarization state and / or a second polarization state of the laser beam to be guided. The beam guidance system also has a frequency conversion unit with a metamaterial structure which does not convert the frequency of the laser beam in the first polarization state and continues it as the primary laser processing beam and which effects a frequency conversion based on the metamaterial structure for generating the frequency-converted processing beam for the laser beam in the second polarization state. Furthermore, the beam guidance system has a focusing unit for focusing the primary laser processing beam and / or the frequency-converted processing beam on the workpiece to be processed.
In a further aspect, a laser processing system for the selectable processing of a workpiece with a laser processing beam and / or a frequency-converted processing beam based on the laser processing beam is disclosed. The laser processing system comprises a laser beam source providing a primary laser beam, a beam guidance system as summarized above, and in particular a workpiece storage unit.
In a further aspect, a method for providing a laser processing beam and / or a frequency-converted processing beam based on the laser processing beam for processing a workpiece comprises the following steps: providing a laser processing system as outlined above with a control unit, initiating the control unit, the element that adjusts the polarization state in the beam guidance system to control the laser processing system as a function of a processing mode in such a way that the primary laser beam is provided as a laser processing beam in a cutting mode for high quality and the frequency-converted processing beam for workpiece processing is provided in a cutting mode with high feed rate, and the workpiece processing is carried out.
Conductor-non-conductor composite materials are referred to herein as frequency-converting metamaterials. Metamaterials have metallic nanostructures that can have dimensions and shapes that are smaller than the relevant wavelength. The optical properties result from the formation of collective electron oscillations or so-called plasmons. Each individual nanostructure can be viewed as a meta-atom, the optical resonance properties of which depend in particular on the shape of the nanostructure, the dielectric properties of the materials used and the environment. Usually these are metallic metamaterials, which are also known as "magnetic metamaterials". In particular, metamaterials, which are designed, for example, as metasurfaces on a surface or as a surface, allow frequency-converted light to be generated when laser light is incident at a harmonic of the frequency of the incident laser beam, in particular in the range of the second or third harmonic. In particular, the emission takes place due to freely movable electrons in conductive structures of the metamaterial structure, which enable a specially designed electron movement in response to the incident laser beam. The electron movement then leads to the emission of light with a wavelength of one or more higher harmonics of the incident laser beam. This light can be generated in such a way that it propagates in a ray-like manner along a direction and is accordingly referred to herein as a frequency-converted processing beam. Since the elementary structure of the metamaterial is smaller than the laser wavelength to be converted, a metamaterial structure for a wavelength of 10 µm has larger elementary structures than a metamaterial structure for shorter wavelengths. In some embodiments, metamaterial structures for a wavelength of 10 μm can thus be easier to implement than embodiments which, for example, are oriented to a wavelength of 1 μm. The concepts disclosed herein are not limited to the conversion of a fundamental wavelength of this, for example, 10 μm into the second harmonic at, for example, 5 μm, but can generally be transferred to wavelengths that can be generated by lasers.
The polarization state is understood here in particular as the type of polarization (linear, circular, elliptical, radial, azimuthal) and its spatial orientation with respect to the nanostructure of the metamaterial - generally the orientation, for example, of the E-field vector relative to the metamaterial. In some exemplary embodiments, the change in a polarization state relates to the orientation of the linear polarization direction or the “polarization” ellipse with respect to the nanostructure of the metamaterial. Thus, the polarization state setting element for providing a first polarization state and / or a second polarization state allows an orientation, for example, a linear polarization in space, i.e. an orientation of the E-field vector relative to the metamaterial, in particular to its elementary structures, to be set. In some embodiments, the change in a polarization state relates to a change from one polarization to another polarization, for example a change between radial and azimuthal polarization. In addition, superimpositions of polarization states can be used to set a ratio between the frequency-converted processing beam and the laser processing beam.
Beispielhafte dünne Leiter-Nichtleiter-Verbundmaterialien werden in „Giant nonlinear response from plasmonic metasurfaces coupled to intersubband transitions“,
The concepts described here relate in particular to the cutting of workpieces, the laser wavelength being switchable between a fundamental wavelength of the incident laser beam and a harmonic wavelength of the same, and a metamaterial that is arranged outside the resonator (i.e. outside a primary laser beam source) and forming a special metamaterial structure is used for the frequency conversion.
The concepts described here also make it possible to adapt the laser wavelength to the desired cutting result, in particular by switching the laser wavelength on a machine tool with metamaterials due to the polarization dependence of the frequency conversion.

Aspects described herein are based in part on the knowledge that optical elements of a machine tool can be designed and arranged in such a way that the wavelength can be switched during laser cutting. It was also recognized that the wavelength can thus be optimally (or as well as possible) matched to the requirements of the respective cutting mode. For example, it was recognized that short wavelengths can be used advantageously for high feed rates for thin workpieces and long wavelengths for high quality for thick workpieces.
For example, a linearly polarized primary laser beam can be used to implement the concepts described herein. The E-field vector of the laser beam can be rotated by rotating a λ / 2 plate in space perpendicular to the direction of propagation with respect to a frequency conversion unit arranged downstream. The frequency conversion unit provides a metamaterial in the beam path that can be operated in transmission and / or in reflection. To illustrate how it works, the behavior of a metamaterial is comparable to that of an antenna. The laser beam falls on the metamaterial, and depending on the orientation of the E-field vector to the elementary structure of the metamaterial, the metamaterial emits, for example, at half the wavelength (i.e. second harmonic generation SHG). To enable the frequency conversion to be switched, the metamaterial needs a symmetry break, e.g. in the form of a split ring. If the λ / 2 plate is rotated, the wavelength in the beam downstream of the frequency conversion unit can be switched between the wavelength of the incident laser beam and the wavelength of the frequency-converted beam (or a superposition of the two).
In the following, an example of a laser processing system is described in general, in which the use of novel optical elements, the so-called metamaterials, for example in combination with a rotatable λ / 2 plate, allows switching between different wavelengths during workpiece processing. Implementation examples of the frequency conversion unit for reflecting and transmitting frequency converting elements are then explained.
