Description
Stand der TechnikState of the art
Secondary batteries based on metallic lithium electrodes are promising solutions for use in electrically operated systems, in particular due to the high specific capacity (3862 mAh / g) and the strongly negative potential of lithium (-3.04 V vs. normal hydrogen electrode) for use in electric vehicles. However, the inadequate safety properties of these electrodes hitherto prevent widespread use of this type of accumulator. This results from the undesirable property of lithium to dendritically precipitate upon charging an electric cell as a metal sponge with concomitant growth. This allows an internal short circuit by piercing the separator with a lithium dendrite, which conductively connects the anode and the cathode. As a result, overheating, even fire or explosion of the cell may occur.
According to the current state of the art, to produce lithium electrodes, current conductors, such as expanded metals, are coated with lithium and installed in a cell coil or as a cell stack with a separator and a cathode in the layer sequence cathode-separator-anode-separator-cathode , The separator is usually made of a polymer such as polyethylene or polypropylene, but may be made of a ceramic material such as garnet. If the material of the separator per se has no or insufficiently high conductivity for Li ions, the conductivity is ensured by the use of a liquid electrolyte. In this case, the separator must have a sufficiently high porosity to ensure the penetration of the electrolyte. In the context of a lithium anode, sulfur is of particular interest as a cathode material because of its high specific capacity (1672 mAh / g).
Zur Haftung der Partikel untereinander und auch auf dem Stromableiter werden Binder verwendet, wie beispielweise PVDF oder PTFE.In contrast to conventional lithium-ion systems with transition metal oxide cathodes, the overall reaction Li + S 8 ⇌ Li 2 S contains several intermediates with different sulfur chain lengths (so-called polysulfides), which are used in common electrolyte systems, such as DOL (1,3-dioxolane) / DME (dimethoxyethane ) with LiTFSI (lithium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl-imide)), as conductive salt are well soluble. Usually, due to the insulating properties of sulfur for the production of electrodes in addition to sulfur, a so-called conductive additive, for example, carbon black or graphite or other usually mesoporous carbon, added. For adhesion of the particles to one another and also to the current conductor, binders are used, such as PVDF or PTFE.
Zusammenfassung und Vorteile der ErfindungSummary and advantages of the invention
The method for producing a metallic electrode defined in claim 1 has the advantage that now a lateral growth of the metal of the metallic electrode, in particular lithium this behavior in a particularly pronounced manner, at the edges of the metal coating in the charging process a cell with a metallic electrode is effectively prevented. According to the state of the art, in the course of cyclization, polysulfides, for example in the case of lithium-sulfur cells, partially diffuse out of the cathode region and can no longer be completely reduced to the end product, that is to say lithium sulfide. The reason lies in the precipitation of formed lithium sulfide on the surface of the conductive additive, whereby the accessibility of the conductive matrix in the cathode for dissolved polysulfides is difficult. Deeper in the electrode layer Leitadditivbereiche, for example, near the current conductor, can then no longer be accessible for already dissolved out polysulfides. Incompletely reduced sulfur species thus remain in the electrolyte at the end of the discharge, resulting in a reduction in sulfur utilization and an accelerated decrease in capacity. However, this is prevented with the present invention. In general, for the present process, the metal of the electrode coating is preferably lithium. Furthermore, the electrode coating may be applied only on one side of the current conductor or be applied to both the upper and the lower side of the current conductor.
The gist of the present invention is a method of manufacturing a metallic electrode which prevents growth of the metal of the electrode coating at the edges of the electrode coating and at bare current sink locations during charging of the cell. For this purpose, all edge regions which are formed by the electrode coating are particularly preferably covered with the inhibitor material. At the edges and corners of the metallic electrode there is an increased field strength compared to the plane of the electrode coating Deposition of the metal at these positions favors. Thus, these areas have been particularly vulnerable, especially when using lithium as a material of the electrode coating, caused by dendrite formation and penetration of the separator an electrical short circuit to the cathode. The inventive production of the metallic electrodes can substantially reduce this risk.
Further, according to another aspect of the present method, the step of applying the inhibitor material on the electrode coating side of the metallic electrode may be provided to those portions of the current conductor which are not covered by the electrode coating. As a result, an undesired deposition of the metal of the electrode coating at (previously) bare points of the current conductor is prevented in an advantageous manner, whereby the risk of an internal short circuit is substantially reduced. Metallic electrodes have so far often uncoated Stromableiterbereiche, such as in the region of the current dissipation or along an edge of the metallic electrode. However, since the current conductor is at the same potential as the metal of the electrode coating and is in contact with the electrolyte, deposition of the metal undesirably takes place also at these bare current discharge points. However, this hitherto possible security risk is remedied by the present production method. Further, the inhibitor material may be applied to the side of the electrode coating of the metallic electrode also immediately adjacent to the surfaces in the thickness direction of the electrode coating.
In accordance with a further embodiment of the present method, the step of at least partially applying the inhibitor material to that side of the current conductor which lies opposite the electrode coating of the metallic electrode can furthermore be provided. As a result, deposition of the metal of the electrode coating on the side of the current conductor which is opposite to the electrode coating is effectively prevented, especially in the case of a metallic electrode which forms the conclusion of a cell stack.
According to a further embodiment of the present method, the current conductor may further comprise at least one Stromableitertab, which is as far covered with the inhibitor material, as it is wetted by an electrolyte. This usually corresponds to at least the area up to the edge of the (mostly) the coating with a protective material slightly overlapping, electrolyte-soaked separator.
According to another embodiment of the present method, the inhibitor material may be a physically setting adhesive or a chemically curing adhesive. In general, the inhibitor material must be electrically and ionically insulating, insoluble in the electrolyte system, and impermeable to an electrolyte-soluble or liquid form of the active material, such as in the case of the metallic system formed of lithium and sulfur, the polysulfides.
According to a further embodiment of the present method, the predetermined width for the covering of the edge region of the electrode coating of the metallic electrode with the inhibitor material may be between 0.1 mm and 2 mm. Preferably, the predetermined width for covering the edge portion of the electrode coating of the metallic electrode with the inhibitor material may be between 0.1 mm and 1 mm.
In accordance with a further embodiment of the present method, the step of at least partially applying a protective material to the electrode coating of the metallic electrode may furthermore be provided, wherein the protective material is impermeable to an electrolyte but conductive to metal ions of the electrode coating. In this case, the coverage of the edge region of the electrode coating with the protective material may be between 0.1 mm and 2 mm.
According to a further embodiment of the present method, intermediate material between the electrode coating of the metallic electrode and the inhibitor material may be provided on all edge regions of the electrode coating having the predetermined width, which has a resistance to the electrode coating. Preferably, the intermediate material is a polymer layer of polyethylene or polypropylene or a polysiloxane layer.
In a further independent claim, a method for producing a cell stack is claimed. The method for producing the cell stack comprises the steps of providing a stack, which has at least one cathode, an anode and at least one separator, in the layer sequence cathode-separator-anode-separator cathode, wherein the cathode or the anode has an electrode coating on one Stromableiter a metallic electrode is; and the joining of the thus formed stack to the cell stack by applying an adhesive layer to the edge regions respectively of all constituents of the stack up to the region of the electrode coating of the stack, wherein the adhesive layer is impenetrable to an electrolyte and an active material dissolved therein, and the adhesive layer further comprises an inhibitor material which is electrically insulating and insulating for metal ions of the electrode coating of the metallic electrode. In addition, the inhibitor material is impermeable to forms of the active material (i.e., the starting material, any intermediate (s), and the end product), such as in the case of the metallic system formed from lithium and sulfur, impermeable to substantially polysulfides and sulfur.
With the present method for producing a cell stack, the outdiffusion of active material from the cathode can be substantially contained and limited to the area of the cell stack. Thus, the diffusion is prevented in dead volumes of the cell, and thus a significant aging mechanism of cells with soluble active material, in particular of lithium-sulfur cells prevented. In addition to improving the cycle stability, an increase in the specific energy of the cell is achieved by a higher total sulfur utilization in this way.
The inhibitor material and the adhesive layer must be electronically and ionically insulating, insoluble in the electrolyte system, and impermeable to the active material, such as polysulfides. As inhibitor material, for example, a polymer layer of polyethylene or polypropylene or a polysiloxane can be used. As an adhesive for the adhesive layer, both physically setting adhesives, such as polychloroprene or polyurethanes, as well as chemically curing adhesives can be used. In the class of chemically curing adhesives both 2-component and 1-component systems can be used, so for example methyl methacrylate adhesives, radiation-curing adhesives such as UV acrylates, silicones, silane-crosslinking polymer adhesives, epoxy resin adhesives, polyurethane adhesives and pressure-sensitive adhesives, which required possess chemical stability.
Furthermore, resistance to the metal of the electrode coating of the metallic electrode is required if the coating is not covered with a protective material which is impermeable to an electrolyte but conductive to metal ions of the electrode coating. Preferably, the protective material also covers the edges of the electrode coating of the metallic electrode. The adhesive layer can then be applied to the protective material, which results in a larger selection of adhesives, since, due to the protective material acting as an intermediate layer, no resistance of the adhesive to the material of the metallic electrode has to be demanded. Particularly when polyolefin layers or membranes are used, the use of an adhesion promoter may be advantageous, for example organically functionalized silanes, organometallic compounds, in particular titanates and zirconates, and also polymers such as polyester and polyethyleneimine.
When using a liquid electrolyte, the electrolyte must be filled before complete sealing of all edges. As a result of the bonding of the cell stack, the area in which the active material dissolved in the electrolyte can move, that is to say in the case of lithium-sulfur cells, the polysulfides, is restricted to the area of the cell stack. As a result, it is advantageously avoided that active material outside the cell stack collects in dead volumes of the cell and can no longer be utilized. This leads to an increase in sulfur utilization and a reduction in capacity drop.
In a further independent claim a method for producing a cell coil is claimed. The method for producing the cell coil comprises the steps of providing a stack, which has at least one cathode, an anode and a first separator and a second separator, in the layer sequence cathode-first separator-anode-second separator, wherein the cathode or the anode an electrode coating on a current collector of a metallic electrode and projecting the longitudinal ends of the two separators respectively over the longitudinal ends of the cathode and the anode; and at least partially applying an inhibitor material to an edge of the current collector, which is provided as a winding axis of the cell coil, to the nearest edge of the electrode coating, and applying the inhibitor material to the edge of the electrode coating having a predetermined width closest to the winding axis of the cell coil wherein the inhibitor material is electrically insulating and insulating for ions of the electrode coating; and applying the inhibitor material on the side of the electrode coating to the edge of the electrode coating of a predetermined width maximally spaced from the winding axis of the cell coil, and at least partially applying the inhibitor material on the side of the electrode coating to the edge of the current conductor facing the winding axis of the cell coil and forms a free end of the current collector, to the nearest edge of the electrode coating. Furthermore, the present method comprises the step of at least partially applying an adhesive layer to that edge of the separator which is external to the cell coil after the stack has been wound up, which lies opposite the winding axis of the cell coil and forms a free end of the separator, with a predetermined width, wherein the adhesive layer for an electrolyte and an active material dissolved therein is impermeable or at least partially applying an adhesive layer on those edges of the two separators, which lie opposite the winding axis of the cell coil and one free end of the separator having a predetermined width, the adhesive layer being impermeable to an electrolyte and an active material dissolved therein; and winding the stack thus formed into the cell coil. Finally, the method comprises the step of applying the adhesive layer perpendicular to the winding axis of the cell coil to the edge regions of all components of the stack up to the region of the electrode coating of the stack, wherein the adhesive layer further comprises the inhibitor material which is electrically insulating and insulating for metal ions of the electrode coating the metallic electrode is.
With the present method for producing a cell coil, the outdiffusion of active material from the cathode can be substantially contained and limited to the area of the cell coil. In the case of the cell coil, the bonding for one end of the cell coil must be carried out in such a way that in addition the sealing of both ends of the coating with the adhesive layer of the wound electrode coating must take place in the direction of the winding axis.
