The object of the invention is to improve a range of illumination of a light transit time camera system in a vehicle.
The object is achieved in an advantageous manner by the method according to the invention and the lighting according to the preamble of the independent claims.
Advantageously, a method is provided for operating an illumination for a light transit time camera system of a vehicle, in which the illumination emits a modulated light, wherein an intensity of the modulated light is adjusted in response to a speed of the vehicle when moving the vehicle.
This procedure has the advantage that the intensity of the emitted light can be dynamically adapted to the respective driving situation and, in particular, increased over a predetermined limit value, which must be observed when the vehicle is at a standstill, for example on the basis of eye safety regulations. As a result, while maintaining eye safety, the range of the illumination can be increased and, because of the higher light intensity, shorter exposure times can also be realized and thus also movement artifacts can be reduced.
In particular, it is advantageous that, when the vehicle is at a standstill, the intensity of the emitted light is predetermined such that a predefined intensity limit within an illumination cone is not exceeded,
wherein for a moving vehicle, a near range within the illumination cone can be predetermined, in which the intensity of the emitted light can be adjusted as a function of the speed also above the predetermined intensity limit value.
To ensure eye safety, it is particularly advantageous to allow exceeding the intensity limit only within a driving tube and / or to set a front limit of the near range in dependence on a minimum braking distance.
Since people are reasonably not in such a travel tube and / or in an area where the vehicle can not come to a standstill when braking, the risk of eye injury from the emitted light is practically not given or of minor importance.
In a further embodiment, it is provided to reduce the intensity of the light as soon as an object enters the vicinity of the illumination. This procedure has the advantage that when an object, for example a vehicle or a person, enters the vicinity, the possibly present critical radiation intensity can be lowered immediately to an uncritical level in order to ensure eye-safe operation even for such a situation.
The invention will be explained in more detail by means of embodiments with reference to the drawings.

With a moving car, this minimum observation distance will increase with increasing speed as the braking distance increases with the speed v squared. At the same time, the danger area to be monitored will also expand. The required intensity I will increase with I ̴ v². Thus, in principle, monitoring in a very wide range would be possible.
The invention is therefore based on the consideration that in a moving vehicle typically no person in the vicinity of the vehicle, so for example at a distance less than 3 m, resides. The eye safety limit values specified for static situations must therefore be re-evaluated for a short-distance range of a moving vehicle.
The basic idea of the invention is that the light intensity, which is considered to be eye safe for a stationary vehicle, can be increased successively in a moving vehicle, since the area in which traffic-typical no persons are present increases with increasing speed.
As a possible approach for the estimation of the size of such a short range N or "safety area" a braking distance d B , in particular the minimum braking distance of the vehicle could be used. For such a range, there is a high risk of colliding with the vehicle, so that this area is not reasonably accessed by persons.
As a further criterion, the distance to a preceding vehicle can be used. If the distance to a vehicle in front is so small that the vehicle penetrates into the vicinity or safety area, the emitted light power would have to be reduced for safety reasons.
As a further criterion for adjusting the light output and the strength of the ambient light can be used. In order to estimate the limits for eye safety, the pupil diameter should be taken into consideration. At high ambient brightness, for example, the pupil diameter of 7 mm can be reduced to 3 mm, so that even higher light outputs are harmless.
The lateral delimitation of the near zone is preferably predeterminable by a so-called driving tube. Driving lane is the area in front of a vehicle that can not be left due to the driving dynamics including all possible steering movements.
In a further embodiment, it may also be provided to provide regions with different intensity of light within this minimum travel tube.
