Description
The invention relates to a method and an analyzer for the automated determination of the chemical oxygen demand of a liquid sample.
Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), for short, is the amount of a chemical compound, usually a strong oxidant, expressed as the oxygen equivalent of the oxidizable ingredients contained in a given volume of a liquid sample under the reaction conditions of a prescribed method is consumed. Potassium dichromate (K 2 Cr 2 O 7 ) is frequently used as the oxidizing agent; potassium permanganate (KMnO 4 ) is also suitable. The COD value is an important parameter for the classification of the degree of pollution in running waters and in sewage and wastewater treatment plants, especially with organic pollutants.
In most chemical oxygen demand determination methods, a liquid sample is treated with a known excess of the oxidizing agent, and then the consumption of the oxidizing agent is determined, for example, by back titration of the unused residue. The amount of oxidant consumed is converted to the equivalent amount of oxygen.
Chloride ions present in the reaction mixture can interfere with the determination of the chemical oxygen demand by this process. For this reason, mercury (II) sulfate (HgSO 4 ) is added to the reaction mixture to mask the chloride ions in the liquid sample. However, mercury (II) salts are highly toxic, so that the thus treated reaction mixture can not be easily returned to the water cycle. Instead, it has to be disposed of and / or processed at high cost. Furthermore, because of the relatively high amounts of mercury (II) salt required over the operating life of the automatic analysis system, there is a risk to operators and the environment.

It is therefore the object of the invention to provide a method and a device which avoids this disadvantage. The object is achieved by a method according to
- – Zugeben einer vorgegebenen Menge eines Reagenz zu der Flüssigkeitsprobe zur Maskierung von Chlorid oder zur Abtrennung von Chlorid aus der Flüssigkeitsprobe;
- – anschließend Bestimmen des chemischen Sauerstoffbedarfs der Flüssigkeitsprobe;
- Adding a predetermined amount of a reagent to the liquid sample to mask chloride or to remove chloride from the liquid sample;
- - then determining the chemical oxygen demand of the liquid sample;
The reagent added to mask the chloride for the liquid sample may be, for example, a mercury (II) salt, such as HgSO 4 , which is preferably in solution. As the reagent for separating chloride from the liquid sample, there may be used, for example, an acid capable of expelling chloride from the liquid sample by a displacement reaction as hydrogen chloride gas. For this purpose, for example, especially concentrated, sulfuric acid is suitable. In the calculation of the predetermined amount of reagent, the evaluation and control device preferably takes into account the volume of the liquid sample and the concentration of the reagent.
By the analysis and control device of the analyzer determines the predetermined amount of reagent to be added on the basis of the true chloride content of the liquid sample measured value, it can adjust the amount of reagent to be added in each case the need. This prevents both over- and under-dosing of the reagent. This leads to a reduction in costs and to an extension of maintenance cycles of the automated analyzer, since the reagent supply must be renewed less frequently. In the event that the reagent is a mercury (II) salt, the environmental impact and health hazard posed by the analyzer will also be minimized.
The analyzer's evaluation and control means, after determining the amount to be added to the fluid sample, may also control the addition of the predetermined amount of reagent to the fluid sample. For this purpose, it can interact, for example, with a delivery and metering device of the analyzer. The interaction can be carried out in particular in such a way that the evaluation and control device controls at least one pump of the conveying and metering device, which controls a transport of the reagent to a container containing the liquid sample. The container may be, for example, a reaction vessel containing the liquid sample or a liquid line carrying the liquid sample.
- – Zugeben eines Oxidationsmittels zur Flüssigkeitsprobe zur Bildung eines Reaktionsgemisches;
- – Heizen des Reaktionsgemisches auf Siedetemperatur des Reaktionsgemisches über eine vorgegebene Zeitdauer, auch als Aufschlusszeit bezeichnet, insbesondere unter Rückfluss;
- Adding an oxidizing agent to the liquid sample to form a reaction mixture;
- Heating the reaction mixture to boiling temperature of the reaction mixture over a predetermined period of time, also referred to as digestion time, in particular under reflux;
- Detecting a measurement signal representing a content of oxidizing agent in the reaction mixture; and
- - From this determination of the chemical oxygen demand of the liquid sample.
As the oxidizing agent, for example, potassium dichromate or potassium permanganate can be used.
The measurement signal representing the content, for example a concentration, of oxidizing agent in the reaction mixture can be obtained, for example, by means of a photometric or electrochemical sensor, in particular by back-titration. A photometric determination of the content of oxidizing agent may be carried out by means of a photometric sensor comprising at least one light source and a light receiver, wherein light emitted by the light source is radiated through the reaction mixture and received by the light receiver. The light receiver outputs an electrical measurement signal that depends on the intensity of the received light. Based on the signal emitted by the light receiver and taking into account the known amount of the oxidant added to the liquid sample, the evaluation and control device can determine the consumption of oxidant in the reaction mixture by means of a calculation rule that can be carried out by the evaluation and control device and determine the chemical oxygen demand of the liquid sample therefrom. In this way, by means of the automatic analyzer with the help of the evaluation and control device all the above-mentioned method steps are performed automatically.
The measured value representing the chloride content of the liquid sample can be determined by means of a chloride sensor designed in particular as an ion-selective electrode (ISE). The latter can output a measurement signal correlated with the measured value to the evaluation and control device for further processing, in particular for determining the chloride content of the liquid sample and for determining the predetermined amount of the reagent to be added to the sample.
The chloride sensor may detect, for example, the reading representative of the chloride content of the fluid sample at a sampling site from which the fluid to be assayed is taken, from which a fluid sample is taken to determine a COD value, for example in a pool, in a pipeline or in a channel. For taking out the liquid to be examined from the sampling point, a sampling device, which in particular comprises a pump, can be used, which conveys the liquid out of the sampling point and transports it into a sample template assigned to the analysis device.
The sample template can be arranged outside the analyzer or integrated in the analyzer. From the sample presentation, the automatic analyzer can remove the liquid sample by means of its already mentioned conveying and metering device. Instead of measuring the chloride content directly at the sampling point, the chloride sensor can also detect the measured value representing the chloride content of the liquid sample in an external sample template of the analyzer arranged outside the analyzer.
For the detection of measurement signals of a at the sampling point, outside the analyzer, arranged chloride sensor which detects a chloride content of the liquid present at the sampling point, the evaluation and control device with the chloride sensor for transmitting signals via a standard interface of process measurement technology, which, for example for detecting a measurement signal in the form of a 4 ... 20 mA signal may be connected. The connection between the chloride sensor and the evaluation and control device can also be realized, for example, via a fieldbus and / or via a process control computer.
Alternatively, it is also possible for the chloride sensor to detect the measured value representing the chloride content of the liquid sample in a vessel of the analyzer containing the liquid sample, in particular an internal sample sample, a liquid line or a reaction container. For example, the analyzer may comprise a reaction vessel into which the liquid sample taken from the sample sample is transported in a first step, and in a second step the reagent serving for masking or separating chloride is added. In a variant of the method described here, the chloride sensor can detect the chloride content of the liquid sample contained in the reaction container.
In a first variant of the method, the evaluation and control device can use a measured by the chloride sensor before adding the reagent, representing the chloride content of the liquid sample to determine a required for complete masking or separation of chloride amount of reagent and the dosing and conveying the Control analyzer in such a way that the determined amount of reagent is added at once.
In an alternative variant of the method, during the addition of the reagent, the evaluation and control device can detect a plurality of measured values representing a chloride content of the liquid sample and control the addition of the reagent based on the detected measured values, in particular on the basis of the measured value profile. This variant is advantageously applicable in the case that chloride is expelled from the liquid sample by addition of sulfuric acid and optional blowing out with a carrier gas, and the chloride sensor detects the chloride content of the liquid sample during the addition of the reagent, for example in a reaction vessel in which the liquid mixed with the reagent.
In an advantageous variant of a method in which chloride is expelled from the liquid sample by addition of sulfuric acid and, if appropriate, blowing out with a carrier gas, the evaluation and control device sequentially records a plurality of measured values representing the chloride content of the liquid sample, and regulates the sulfuric acid based on the measured values recorded. Addition accordingly.
The evaluation and control device can be designed to automatically perform the method steps and method variants described above, in particular in cooperation with the conveying and metering device, which is used to determine the consumption oxidant-serving, in particular photometric, sensor and the chloride sensor. For this purpose, it can have a computing device, in particular comprising one or more processors, and one or more memories which can be accessed by the computing device, and in which a computer program executable by the computing device is stored, which serves to carry out the respective method steps. The computer program can contain, for example, algorithms for calculating the COD value on the basis of a measurement signal provided for determining the consumption of the oxidizing agent, in particular a photometric sensor, and for determining the predetermined amount of the reagent to be added to the liquid sample. In addition, the computer program can serve to control or regulate the conveying and metering device for carrying out the method steps described above.

In this embodiment, the reagent is added to the liquid sample introduced in the reaction vessel. In the event that sulfuric acid is used as the reagent, the reaction vessel may each have at least one supply line and a discharge for a carrier gas, which are arranged so that the carrier gas flows through the liquid sample contained in the reaction vessel, due to the addition of sulfuric acid to the liquid sample discharged hydrogen chloride gas.
The temperature control device may comprise heating means and a cooling device arranged in a region of the reaction vessel which is at a distance from the heating means in order to allow the reaction mixture to be heated to refluxing temperature.
The analyzer may further comprise a chloride sensor, in particular designed as an ion-selective electrode, which serves to detect the measured value representing the chloride content of the liquid sample. The analyzer can be designed to remove the liquid sample from an external sample template by means of the metering and conveying device. In this embodiment, the chloride sensor may be arranged in the sample template for detecting a measured value representing the chloride content of the liquid contained in the sample original.
Alternatively, the chloride sensor can also be arranged inside the analyzer, for example in a vessel of the analyzer containing the liquid sample, in particular an internal sample receiver, a liquid conduit or in the reaction vessel in order to detect the measured value representing the chloride content of the liquid.
