Abstract
Description
The invention relates to an active sonar method, in particular a sonar method for a long-range submarine hunting in deep water.
- • The sonar data are correlated with respect to a transmit signal ("matched filter") and directional ("beamforming"). Due to the correlation with respect to a transmit signal, the sonar data is more apparent. The transmit signal covers a bandwidth and may be, for example, a Linear Frequency Modulation (LFM) signal. For directional formation in the range of 0 to 360 °, the phase relationship is exploited taking into account the antenna geometry.
- The sonar data are from a hydrophone arrangement with a right-left distinction with respect to an axis of symmetry.
- The sonar data comprises data points, each data point being addressed by an angle value and a distance value and having an unnormalized sonar value.
- • The steps of the procedure comprise the following individual steps:
- • Normalization of the non-normalized sonar values of the data points while obtaining normalized sonar values. The normalization represents a local determination of the signal strength relative to the environment.
- • Applying a threshold method to the normalized sonar values of the data points of the sonar data to obtain echo data points.
- • Formation of objects from connected echo data points.

The invention is based on the object, starting from a generic sonar method to reduce decoys with respect to the seabed reflection circles or arcs.
This object is achieved by the features of
- Calculation of a mean non-normalized sonar value of the object from the non-normalized sonar values of its data points for a subsequent comparison.
- • Determine an object mirrored to the symmetry axis of the hydrophone array by determining the angle value and the distance value of its mirrored data points.
- • Calculation of a mean non-normalized sonar value of the mirrored object from the non-normalized sonar values of its data points in order to compare this value with the corresponding value of the object to be checked.
- • Formation of a similarity value between the mean non-normalized sonar value of the object and the mean non-normalized sonar value of the mirrored object. The similarity value may be based on the difference, where a low difference corresponds to a high similarity value. The average non-normalized sonar values are compared with each other because they reflect the local reflectance of the sonar signal to the corresponding distance below the directional angles.
- • Assigning the object as a fake target if the similarity value is high or else as a target.
The inventive idea lies in recognizing objects of seabed reflection circles or arcs and classifying them as a fake target by exploiting the symmetry. In this case, there is also a similar mirrored object to an object of a seabed reflection circle or arc. This will be checked. If there is a high degree of similarity between an object to be checked and an object mirrored for this purpose, the object to be checked is, with a high probability, a fictitious target. Critical is the case when a submarine to be detected has a distance that corresponds exactly to a radius of a seabed reflection circle or arc. Depending on the return strength of the target (target strength) and the reflectance of the seabed, the submarine is classified as a target. Normally, the non-normalized sonar values of the data points of a target are higher than the non-normalized sonar values of the data points of ground reflections. In these cases classification would be the target. The target is also well visible on a sonar image because the decoy objects of the seabed reflection circles and arcs have been erased.
- • Calculation of an average normalized sonar value of the object from the normalized sonar values of its data points.
- • Calculation of an average normalized sonar value of the mirrored object from the normalized sonar values of its data points.
- Formation of a match value between the mean normalized sonar value of the object and the mean normalized sonar value of the mirrored object.
- • Maintaining the object's assignment as a dummy target when there is a high match value, and otherwise associating the object as a target. This embodiment increases the accuracy of the classification into goals and fictitious targets, since in addition the average normalized sonar values are compared. For a match of the mean non-normalized sonar values of the object to be checked and its mirrored object can be coincidental.
A further embodiment of the invention is the

By normalizing the non-normalized sonar values of the data points, normalized sonar values are obtained. By applying a threshold value method to the normalized sonar values of the data points of the sonar data, the so-called echo data points are obtained. From connected echo data points objects are formed.
