Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a bipolar plate for a fuel cell with an open gas distributor structure, which is arranged on a separator plate, wherein the bipolar plate has at least one supply channel and at least one discharge channel.
Stand der TechnikState of the art
Bipolar plates are used in fuel cells, such as polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEM fuel cell, English: Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell), with the reactants hydrogen and atmospheric oxygen and the product water. The fuel cells must be supplied with the reactants hydrogen and atmospheric oxygen and the reaction product water must be disposed of. This is done via gas distribution structures to bipolar plates.
The reliable and complete discharge of the reaction product water, in particular after switching off the fuel cell is important to ensure a freeze-start capability of the fuel cell. Various gas distributor structures, such as channel structures and open structures, are known in the prior art. Channel structures are formed by parallel channels, single and multiple meanders or interrupted channels. Open gas distribution structures are formed by pin structures or porous structures.
Channel structures known from the prior art allow channeling of the gas stream and the representation of a certain pressure loss for the reliable discharge of water, since a force acting on a forming drop due to the pressure difference in front of and behind the drop acts to drive the drop out of the channel , A disadvantage is the partial coverage of the fuel cell electrodes by the webs, which separate the channels from each other. The minimum width of the webs is determined on the one hand by the manufacturability, such as bending radii in metallic gas distributors, on the other hand by the minimum contact surface, which must exist to the bipolar plate in order to dissipate the electric current can. In addition, a certain number of webs is necessary because the width of the webs is limited for reasons of stability and for reasons of current dissipation from the fuel cell electrode. The degree of coverage of the fuel cell electrode by the webs of the gas supply structure is usually 30% to 60% and manifests itself in high mass transport losses at high current densities. The reason for this is the accumulation of water under the webs and the reduced diffusion of the educts under the webs. Disadvantages are, in addition to the design-related reduction of the surface of the fuel cell electrode, the necessarily high pressure losses for discharging the water, accompanied by high parasitic losses.
Furthermore, open gas distributor structures are known in the prior art. The known open gas distributor structures cover the active area only to a small proportion of up to 10% and to only by longitudinal and transverse webs of very small width of about 200 microns, so that almost the entire surface of the fuel cell electrode freely accessible to the reactants is. This manifests itself in general with a high current carrying capacity, ie realizable current densities of more than 2 A / cm 2 at low pressure losses. Another advantage of the open gas distribution structures is the even distribution of the compression pressure. Disadvantage of these open gas distribution structures is that water of reaction due to the lack of channeling of the gas stream can be discharged only with difficulty, since the gas chooses the path of least flow resistance and tropics or blockages are flowed around by liquid water and the water is not discharged. As a result, long dry-blowing phases of typically several tens of seconds to minutes are required to disperse the product water so that fast and reliable freeze starts are possible. For this purpose, it is necessary to discharge the reaction product water in order to avoid that during freezing of the fuel cell at low ambient temperatures freezing below the freezing point, whereby operation of the fuel cell would no longer be possible.
A disadvantage of the conventional channel structures is that they block a significant proportion of the active area, whereby the supply of the electrode under the webs is deteriorated. A disadvantage of the known open gas distributor structures is that they can be blown dry poorly, so that long shutdown procedures are necessary or the freeze-start capability is reduced.

The object of the invention is to develop a bipolar plate for a fuel cell with an open gas distributor structure such that the blowing out of the product water is simplified, without there being any appreciable reduction in the active area of the fuel cell electrode.
According to the invention this object is achieved by a bipolar plate according to claim 1. Advantageous developments of the invention are specified in the subclaims.
Offenbarung der ErfindungDisclosure of the invention
According to the invention, in the bipolar plate for a fuel cell having an open gas distributor structure arranged on a separator plate, the bipolar plate having at least one supply channel and at least one discharge channel, is provided in the gas distributor structure flow directing elements for the formation of flow channels, which directed from the feed channel to the discharge channel are, are introduced.
The essence of the invention is thus that an open gas distribution structure of a bipolar plate for a fuel cell is combined with a structure, which structure flow guide elements for channeling the gas flow, whereby a faster and safer removal of liquid water is ensured, since the flow guide elements form flow channels, which are directed from the supply channel to the discharge channel. Characterized in that the flow channels are formed such that they point from the supply channel to the discharge channel, the blowing out of the water in the open gas distribution structure of the bipolar plate is significantly improved. Since only a few flow guide elements are necessary for the formation of the flow channels, almost the low degree of coverage of a completely open gas distributor structure is achieved and high current densities are possible. By means of the invention, the particular advantages of an open gas distributor structure are combined with the advantages of a channel structure in that high current densities are possible by only very small coverage of an open gas distributor structure by the flow guide elements provided according to the invention, wherein the flow channels formed by the flow guide elements in the open gas distributor structure Removal of the reaction product water is facilitated and easily by blowing, in particular after operation of the fuel cell is possible to allow a good freeze-start capability of the fuel cell.
The Strömungsleitelemente to ensure the easy purging of water during shutdown of the fuel cell by the formation of flow channels in the open gas distribution structure, preferably the top of the flow is designed as narrow as possible in order to achieve the lowest possible coverage of the active surface of the fuel cell electrode. There is thus no significant coverage of the active surface of the fuel cell electrode by the flow guide.
The open gas distributor structure can be formed by a porous material, in particular metallic structures, such as expanded metals and / or foams and / or wire mesh. However, it is also possible for the open gas distributor structure to be formed by a pin structure in which a multiplicity of individual, all-around flowed pins are provided on the separator plate.
Preferably, the flow guide elements are formed by guide webs. These can be integrally formed on the separator plate. In particular, the flow guide elements can be formed by bulges or forms of the separator plate, in particular form cooling channels on the rear side of the separator plate.
However, the flow guide elements may also be formed by higher-density regions of a porous material forming the open gas distributor structure. In particular, three-dimensional, repeating, in particular metallic, structures such as expanded metals, foams and wire meshes can be used.
The flow guide elements can thus be embodied as bulges or forms of the separator plates, between which the porous structures forming the open gas distributor structure are inserted. Alternatively, the flow directing elements can be embodied directly in the materials forming the open gas distributor structure, for example by a production-controlled partial blocking or higher compression of expanded metals, foams or wire mesh. This method has the advantage that the number of production steps and components is minimized, since the flow guide elements are introduced directly into the material forming the open gas distributor structure by a locally increased compression of the material.
The preferably used metallic structures for forming the open gas distribution structure can be combined with a metallic separator film, which ensures the separation to the adjacent cooling or gas compartment. A connection by gluing, soldering or the like is possible, but not absolutely necessary, since the components in the stack are firmly pressed together by the tension of the fuel cell stack.
The flow guide can be a semi-circular, so semicircular or triangular or square, in particular square or rectangular or trapezoidal cross-section. Preferably, the cross section of the flow guide is designed such that it tapers from the separator plate.
In particular, in the case where the flow directors are made with a tapered or tapered or half-round cross-section, it is ensured that the degree of coverage of the active area of the fuel cell electrode is minimized since in this case the flow directors are largely buried in the open gas distribution structure are.
The flow guide elements are preferably meander-shaped or arranged in parallel to form the flow channels from the feed channel to the discharge channel. In the meandering or parallel arrangement of the flow guide elements, these are arranged over the entire surface of the open gas distributor structure.
Preferably, the flow guide elements are arranged at a distance of 3 mm to 20 mm, particularly preferably with a distance of 5 mm to 10 mm from each other. In particular, the arrangement of the flow guide can be made equidistant from each other. If the flow guide elements are designed as an embodiment of metallic or graphitic structures and form free cross sections on the rear side of the separator plate, they can be used as cooling channels. The rear side of the separator plate can thus form the boundary of the gas distributor structure of a neighboring cell or of a coolant distributor.
The bipolar plate according to the invention can be used as an anode distributor and / or as a cathode distributor and / or coolant distributor. In this case, different open gas distributor structures on the anode side and the cathode side and the coolant side can be combined.
Due to the formation of flow channels within the open gas distributor structure by the flow guide elements provided according to the invention, a gas supply of fuel cells for high current and thus high power densities while allowing easy, fast and safe water discharge when switching off the fuel cell, since a blowing out of the water by the through the Flow guide formed flow channels is facilitated. The invention enables a uniform and high-current supply of a fuel cell with simultaneously ensured discharge of reaction products and low pressure loss. A preferred application of the bipolar plate is given in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEM), where it due to the good gas supply very high current densities of about 2 A / cm 2 and thus high power densities and low power costs allows at the same time ensured removal of the liquid Reaction water, which allows a quick and reproducible freeze start after briefly blowing through the bipolar plate when switching off the fuel cell. This bipolar plate can be used in particular in fuel cells for motor vehicles. However, the invention is not limited to this application.
In this case, the open gas distributor structure is preferably designed to be hydrophobic; in particular, the material forming the open gas distributor structure may have a hydrophobic coating in order to improve the discharge of water.
A fuel cell according to the invention has a plurality of bipolar plates according to the invention, which are combined to form a stack.
