Derartige Wickelschläuche werden üblicherweise in Abgasleitungen eingesetzt. Dies ist insbesondere bei Kraftfahrzeugen der Fall, wo durch den Motor Bewegungen, Schwingungen und Vibrationen in die Abgasanlage eingebracht werden. Die Wickelschläuche werden im Nutzfahrzeugbereich oftmals alleine als Schwingungsentkopplung eingesetzt. In Personenkraftwagen hingegen werden sie in der Regel als Teil eines komplexen Entkopplungselementes verwendet, welches als weitere Komponenten einen Balg, ein Geflecht oder ein Gestricke oder eine Kombination dieser Elemente umfasst. Wesentlich ist, dass der streckbare Metallschlauch oder das einen streckbaren Metallschlauch enthaltende Entkopplungselement in der Abgasanlage derart angeordnet ist, dass der Motor schwingungstechnisch von der restlichen Abgasanlage zum überwiegenden Anteil isoliert wird.Such winding tubes are usually used in exhaust pipes. An die ineinander greifende Verbindung der Bandkanten der streckbaren Metallschläuche werden mehrere, an sich widersprüchliche Anforderungen gestellt: Für eine hohe Dichtheit bzw. Dämpfungswirkung ist ein festes Wickeln zweckmäßig, d. h. dass die Bandkanten benachbarter Bandwindungen mit hohem Druck aneinander anliegen. Für die Beweglichkeit des Wickelschlauches müssen sich die aneinander anliegenden Bandkanten jedoch ausreichend leichtgängig gegeneinander verschieben lassen. Im Falle der Temperaturbeanspruchung im Betrieb kommt es zwar zur Bildung von Oxidschichten im Kontaktbereich zwischen den Bandlagen. Ein zweiter, entscheidender Einflußfaktor aber ist die Lösung der Eigenspannungen erster Ordnung, die durch den Umformprozeß in das Material des streckbaren Metallschlauchs eingebracht worden sind. Die Lösung dieser Eigenspannungen bewirkt in erster Näherung, dass das Bandmaterial die Neigung hat, in Richtung seines Ursprungszustandes (ebenes Band) zurückzukehren. Der Effekt führt bei einem polygonalen Wickelschlauch dazu, dass die einzelnen Bandlagen zueinander eine kleine, jedoch messbare torsionale Verschiebung zueinander aufweisen. In der Folge der torsionalen Verschiebung der Windungslagen zueinander verstärken sich die Kontaktspannungen in allen Polygonkanten am gesamten Umfang, da diese eine Art „Verdrehsicherung” darstellen.
