Es ist bekannt, dass bei herkömmlichen Weichlagerungsmatratzen unterschiedliche Schaumstoff-Typen und Anordnungen zur Schaffung eines angenehmen Liege-Komforts eingesetzt werden (z. B. zwecks Reduzierung von Auflagedrücken bzw. zur Verhinderung eines „Durchliegens” bei zu weichen und/oder zu dünnen Schaumstoff-Schichten). Bei diesen so genannten Mehrzonen-Matratzen werden oft atmungsaktive Überzüge verwendet, welche die Schaumstoff-Elemente der Matratze schützen und einen Rückstau von Körperwärme verhindern sollen. Da aber der Wärmerückstau nun über den eigentlichen Matratzen-Kern aufgebaut wird (abhängig von den physikalischen Eigenschaften der verwendeten Schaumstoff-Materialien) wird der Effekt des Wärmerückstaus oft nur unbefriedigend verhindert. Im Bereich der klinischen Anwendung werden solche Matratzen auch zur Dekubitus-Prophylaxe bzw. -Therapie eingesetzt. Es ist bei diesen Matratzen jedoch so, dass – bedingt durch die gleich bleibende Stauchhärte der obersten Schaumstoff-Schicht – einem Herausfallen des Patienten durch Bewegungen (z. B. während des Schlafes) in keinerlei Weise vorgebeugt wird. Die Einbringung von viskoelastischen oder ähnlich geeigneten Materialien innerhalb der entstehenden Vertiefung gewährleistet hierbei eine Form der Dekubitus-Prophylaxe, welche bereits aus dem Stand der Technik bekannt ist. Es werden vorzugsweise mehrere würfelförmige Elemente eingebracht, damit durch das Herausnahmen eines Würfel-Elementes die Freilegung von bereits bestehenden Dekubital-Geschwüren ermöglicht wird (zwecks Druck-Entlastung und Luftzufuhr). Dem Problem der Wärmerückstau-Ausbildung wird mit einer thermoregulierenden Schicht auf der Liegefläche begegnet, welche bei steigender Temperatur einen Kühleffekt und bei sinkender Temperatur einen Wärmeeffekt auslöst.
