Abstract
Description
The invention relates to an image processing method for medical image data.
The quality of medical image data depends on the imaging modality used and the particular process used to acquire the image data. In general, the quality of medical images can be improved by generating multiple image data from the imaging area, which are then averaged to reduce image noise. By means of a low-pass filtering, the noise in the images can be reduced. In this way, however, intensity jumps in the image data, which are generated by the depicted structures themselves, are also smoothed out in an undesired manner. The image impression is thus softer or washed-out. The images appear blurred after such low-pass filtering.
When imaging by means of magnetic resonance technique, the spatial resolution is achieved by switching temporally variable gradient fields. Thus, the magnetic resonance signal is assigned a location information about the phase position and the frequency, which is then reconstructed as spatial object information via a Fourier transform to image data. Since only a limited part of the entire frequency space can be encoded by the switched gradient fields, oscillations occur in the reconstruction, which are known as Gibbs-ringing effects and clearly disturb the image impression. Usually, therefore, magnetic resonance images with a linear filter, z. As a Tukey filter or a Gaussian filter, smoothed, which on the one hand leads to the suppression of oscillations, on the other hand, however, means a significant loss of resolution.

The invention is based on the object of specifying a method for reducing fuzzy impressions in medical image data.
The present object is achieved with the subject matter of claim 1. Accordingly, an image processing method for medical image data comprises the steps of acquiring medical raw data, reconstructing raw image data from the raw data, smoothing the raw image data with an edge preserving filter to produce smoothed raw image data, generating an edge image from the smoothed raw image data, superimposing the edge image, and the smoothed raw image data for generating an edge-enhanced image and displaying and / or further processing the edge-enhanced image. The idea of the method according to the invention therefore consists in compensating for the loss of resolution caused by low-pass filtering by means of an edge-preserving denoudation step with subsequent edge enhancement. The edges can even be strengthened in relation to the natural image impression in order to emphasize eye-catching structures in the image.
The raw medical data can be used both as 2D as well as 3D data, eg. B. as Schnittbild- or Volumenbildrohdaten, and be further processed accordingly.
An advantageous embodiment is characterized in that the smoothing of the raw image data comprises a non-linear filtering, wherein the non-linear filter stage works according to the non-local-means filter concept. The non-local means filter concept gives very good results in terms of edge detection and image sharpness enhancement, but this type of filter requires very high computation time, which in some cases limits its practical use.
A further advantageous embodiment is characterized in that the non-linear filter stage operates according to the filter concept of the iterative minimization of the total variation. Here, the Entrauschvorgang is formulated as a numerical optimization problem, the cost function of the L2 standard (Euclidean norm) of the difference to the noisy picture and the total variation as a regularization term composed. In order to obtain a natural image impression, the derivation of the first as well as the second order should be included in the calculation of the total variation.
In a further advantageous embodiment, the non-linear filter stage works according to the filter concept of the multiple application of simple adaptive one-dimensional filters. The adaptive one-dimensional filters offer a significantly higher processing speed, but in some cases the achievable denoudation results are not as high as in the non-local-means filter concept or in the filter concept of iterative minimization of total variation.
A further advantageous embodiment is characterized in that a noise pattern in the raw image data is determined by subtraction of the raw image data with the smoothed raw image data and then buffered and that the edge image is superimposed again a part of the noise pattern. The back-superposition of a certain proportion of the previously existing noise pattern can avoid an unnatural image impression.
In a particularly advantageous manner, the image processing method for medical image data can be applied to the post-processing of magnetic resonance image data.
Es zeigen:Embodiments of the invention are explained below with reference to four figures. Show it:
The exemplary embodiments of the image processing method according to the invention described below relate to raw data which was measured with the aid of the magnetic resonance technique. However, the method according to the embodiment is also suitable for raw data acquired with other imaging modalities, for example by means of ultrasound technology or by means of X-ray technology. The reconstruction of the raw image data from the raw data naturally differs in the individual imaging modalities.
