It is therefore the object of the present invention to provide an apparatus and a method for generating electrical energy, which avoid the disadvantages of the aforementioned prior art.
This object is achieved on the basis of an apparatus for generating electrical energy according to the preamble of
- A thermal energy store having a fluid as heat storage medium, in particular a water-salt solution, for absorbing thermal energy, the thermal energy store having a thermal connection area,
- A thermoelectric generator having a first outer surface and a second outer surface, wherein the thermoelectric generator is configured to generate electrical energy when a temperature gradient is applied between the first outer surface and the second outer surface, the first outer surface at the thermal interface of thermal energy storage so flat rests that a thermal connection between the first outer surface and the thermal connection surface of the energy storage is formed,
- Providing the device according to the invention,
- - Providing a temperature gradient between the first outer surface and the second outer surface of the thermoelectric generator by thermal energy is supplied to the thermal energy storage or removed and / or a temperature change is effected on the second outer surface of the thermoelectric generator.
By means of the inventive means for absorbing a thermal change in volume is avoided in an advantageous manner that the thermal energy storage takes structural damage when the fluid expands or contracts with a change in temperature, especially when the fluid undergoes a phase transition. The device according to the invention thus has a longer service life than the aforementioned power generation systems of the prior art. A further advantage of the invention is that the device according to the invention can also be used, at least temporarily, in environments which have no temperature gradient per se, since a local sink and / or source of thermal energy is provided by means of the thermal energy store. The device according to the invention thus provides an artificial temperature gradient locally. As a result, the yield of the thermoelectric generator, which depends in particular on the temperature gradient applied to the first and the second outer surface, is advantageously increased. Furthermore, by means of the invention, a power generating device is provided, which can be designed to be particularly small and compact, so that the devices can also be installed in locations which provide only a small installation area. Preferably, the device according to the invention is dimensioned such that it can be arranged in a cube with an edge length of less than 30 cm, preferably less than 20 cm, preferably less than 10 cm.
According to the invention, the device is used in an aircraft or a submersible. In particular, the device in a vehicle outer wall, which may be formed, for example, double-walled, installed, for example, in a fuselage of an aircraft or submersible vehicle. But it can also be provided that the device is installed in a tail or wing. In particular, the device is arranged in areas which are in thermal contact with an outside world. Preferably, the second outer surface is thermally coupled via the vehicle outer wall with an environment of the vehicle. The device can be used for example in an accident data recorder or a black box, also referred to as black box. Furthermore, the device can be used for example for the electrical power supply for sensors, in particular autonomous sensors, preferably for sensors in an aircraft. The sensors preferably comprise radio sensors, in particular autonomous radio sensors. The radio sensors are preferably designed as a radio sensor network node, preferably a self-sufficient radio sensor network node. The device according to the invention can therefore replace or supplement a primary energy source for the above sensors and thus enables an autonomous and self-sufficient operation of such sensors. Since the thermal energy storage takes a time delay, an ambient temperature and this changes in a climb or descent of the vehicle, electrical energy is generated due to the ever again forming temperature gradient between the thermal energy storage and the environment. Furthermore, a secure energy supply in the cross-country flight is ensured by the thermal energy storage according to the invention, that is, before a climb or descent takes place with associated altitude change. Thus, by means of the invention, a regenerative power source with high power density is provided.
In an exemplary embodiment of the invention, the thermoelectric generator is designed symmetrically. This means that both the first outer surface and the second outer surface are formed in such a way that both are applied in a planar manner to the thermal connection surface of the thermal energy store. Preferably, the thermoelectric generator comprises a Peltier element. For example, the Peltier element is at least partially made of Bi 2 Te 3 , PbTe, SiGe, BiSb or FeSi 2 . In a further preferred embodiment, the thermoelectric generator comprises a plurality of Peltier elements connected in series. Thus, with the same temperature gradient, a greater electrical voltage is generated than with only one Peltier element. Preferably, the Peltier element comprises a plurality, in particular two, cuboid regions of p- and n-doped semiconductor material, preferably Bi 2 Te 3 , PbTe, SiGe, BiSb, FeSi 2 or alumina. The cuboids are each by means of metallic contact bridges electrically connected together. Preferably, the first and / or second outer surface are at least partially formed from the metallic contact bridges. In another preferred embodiment of the invention, the thermoelectric generator has electrical terminals which are configured to connect the electrothermal generator to an electrical circuit.

The fluid used in the thermal energy storage is preferably a water-salt solution, in particular, the salt is sodium chloride. For example, the fluid may also be a water-ammonia solution. Preferably, the fluid has a freezing point of 220 Kelvin to 320 Kelvin, preferably between 270 K and 260 Kelvin, further preferably between 273 K and 252 K. About the freezing point, on the one hand, a temperature point of the delivery of latent heat can be controlled and on the other hand, a thawing time to be influenced. In a further exemplary embodiment of the invention, a fluid can be provided which undergoes a phase change, preferably in a temperature range from 220 Kelvin to 320 Kelvin. Preferably, a fluid is provided which undergoes a phase change from solid to liquid.
In an exemplary embodiment of the invention, the thermal energy store has a fluid connection which is configured to introduce and / or remove the fluid into the thermal energy store. The fluid connection preferably has a valve. For example, the valve comprises a seal. In a preferred embodiment, the valve is formed as a screw valve or as a pinch valve.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the means for receiving a thermal volume change as an expansion joint, a bellows, a corrugated bellows, a body made of an elastic material or as a rubber ball is formed. In an exemplary embodiment of the invention, means for adjusting a distance between the first outer surface of the thermoelectric generator and the thermal connection surface of the thermal energy store are provided, preferably the means are arranged on the thermal energy store. Since thermal coupling of the first outer surface with the thermal connection surface depends in particular on the distance, an adjustable thermal resistance is thus created between the outer thermal surface and the first outer surface. In this way, in particular, the generation of electrical energy can be interrupted simply by setting the distance such that the thermal connection area and the first connection area are thermally decoupled from one another. In another preferred embodiment of the invention, a thermal insulation between the means for adjusting a distance and the thermal energy storage and / or the thermoelectric generator may be provided. Thus, it is advantageously avoided that thermal energy can be transmitted via the means for setting a distance. In particular, a thermal short circuit is avoided.
In another advantageous embodiment of the invention, the means for adjusting a distance are configured such that a contact pressure between the first outer surface of the thermoelectric generator and the thermal connection surface of the thermal energy store is adjustable. As a result, a particularly good thermal coupling of the first outer surface and the thermal connection surface is achieved. It can be provided that the first outer surface is glued to the thermal connection surface by means of a thermally conductive adhesive. Preferably, the adhesive is formed such that it ensures an adhesive bond between the first outer surface and the thermal interface even after repeated loosening and recapturing. Preferably, the adhesive has a high thermal conductivity. In an exemplary embodiment of the invention, the adhesive comprises a metal adhesive and / or an epoxy resin adhesive.

In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the means for adjusting a distance comprise at least one spring bolt with an adjustable spring tension. In particular, the spring bolts are configured to press the thermal interface against the first outer surface. Preferably, three spring bolts are provided. Preferably, the spring tension is adjustable by means of a nut. Preferably, the nut is disposed at one end of the spring bolt. Preferably, a washer is provided between the nut and the spring. Preferably, mother, Spring and spring bolt made of a thermally poorly conductive material. It may further be provided that the at least one spring bolt is at least partially enclosed by a thermal insulation. In a further exemplary embodiment of the invention it can be provided that the spring bolts are made of metal or of a fiber-plastic composite material, preferably of a carbon fiber reinforced plastic, in particular of a carbon-fiber-plastic (CFRP) material. The bolts may in particular be formed from a ceramic material.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention can proceed, that the thermal energy storage comprises a container in which the fluid is arranged. Preferably, the container is thermally insulated. In particular, insulation means may be provided which at least partially thermally insulate the thermal energy store or the container from an environment. Preferably, the insulation means comprise a thermal insulation material. For example, it can be provided that the thermal insulation material at least partially surrounds the thermal energy store or the container. Preferably, the thermal insulation material is foamed polystyrene. It may, for example, foamed polyurethane, foamed glass or any other suitable for the particular application insulating material, such as mineral wool, especially glass wool or rock wool. It may be provided in an advantageous embodiment of the invention that the container has a plurality of separate chambers for fluid intake. Thus, for example, a plurality of fluids each having different temperatures can be introduced into the thermal energy store, so that corresponding temperature gradients between the first and the second outer surface of the thermoelectric generator can be selected thereby. In an exemplary embodiment of the invention, the device for recording a thermal volume change is integrated in the container.
In a further exemplary embodiment of the invention it can be provided that the container has an outer wall and an inner wall spaced from the outer wall, wherein the inner wall encloses an inner volume in which the fluid is arranged. In particular, the inner wall and / or the outer wall can each have a reflective layer on one or both sides. Preferably, the reflective layer comprises an aluminum layer, preferably a silver layer, preferably a gold layer. For example, it can be provided that the device for absorbing a thermal change in volume is integrated in the inner wall. In a further embodiment of the invention can be provided that a further means for receiving a thermal change in volume is integrated in the outer wall. For example, a bellows and / or an expansion joint can be integrated in the inner wall. In addition, a further bellows and / or a further expansion joint may be integrated in the outer wall.
It may further be provided in a preferred embodiment of the invention that between the outer wall and the inner wall, a vacuum is formed.
Alternatively it can be provided that between the outer wall and the inner wall, a further fluid for thermal insulation, in particular argon, is introduced. Preferably, the container has a port which is configured to evacuate the gap and / or to fill with the further fluid. In particular, the connection has a tube. Preferably, the tube is formed as a pinch tube. Thus, the tube can be easily squeezed off after evacuation and / or filling, whereby a secure seal of the gap is achieved with respect to an environment. It may be provided in another preferred embodiment of the invention to arrange thermal insulation means between the outer wall and the inner wall. Preferably, the thermal insulation means are formed of thermal insulation materials, preferably foamed polystyrene. For example, it is also possible to use foamed polyurethane, foamed glass or any other thermal insulating material suitable for the respective application, for example mineral wool, in particular glass wool or rock wool. The above-described double-walled embodiments of the container according to the invention not only cause a particularly effective thermal insulation of the thermal energy storage, but also a mechanical protection against external forces acting on the energy storage forces. In particular, a fluid arranged between the outer wall and the inner wall of the container or an insulating material or thermal insulation material suitable for the respective application ensures reliable mechanical protection.
In another exemplary embodiment of the invention, provision may be made for a thermal energy distribution device to be arranged within the thermal energy store, which is configured to reduce temperature gradients in the fluid, that is, to equalize the temperature of the heat carrier fluid. As a result, the efficiency of the power generating device is significantly improved. Preferably, the thermal energy distribution device comprises thermal guide ribs. In particular, the thermal Guide ribs made of aluminum or copper, preferably made of graphite or graphite fibers. In a further preferred embodiment of the invention can be provided that the thermal energy distribution device is thermally connected to the thermal connection surface.
Furthermore, in another preferred embodiment of the invention, a control device is provided, which is configured to control the means for setting a distance. In particular, the control device may be configured to control the means for setting a distance as a function of at least one parameter selected from the following group of parameters: thermal energy storage temperature, first generator temperature applied to the first outer surface of the thermoelectric generator, on the second outer surface of the thermoelectric generator adjacent second generator temperature, ambient temperature. Preferably, the thermal energy store and / or the thermoelectric generator has / have temperature sensors that can be connected to the control device.
In another preferred embodiment of the invention, the thermal energy store is hemispherical or spherical. This reduces a loss of thermal energy. In addition, a quasi-point-like mass is thereby made available, in which no change in position occurs due to shifting fluid parts, which could otherwise adversely affect the attitude or swimming position in small aircraft and diving vehicles. Preferably, the thermal interface comprises the base surface of the hemispherical or spherical container. As a result, it is also possible to produce the device easily, but nevertheless pressure-resistant, which is particularly advantageous for environments with high external pressure.
Preferably, thermal energy is supplied to the thermal energy storage by an additional fluid is introduced into the thermal energy storage. In particular, the thermal energy storage thermal energy is removed by the fluid and / or the additional fluid is removed from the thermal energy storage. Alternatively, a quantity of fluid in the thermal energy store is kept constant. A thermal energy is then supplied by heating the fluid to the energy store. In particular, the amount of fluid controls the maximum available thermal energy, especially if temperature limits are known.
Preferably, a temperature change on the second outer surface of the thermoelectric generator can be effected in particular by shifting the device from a first environment having a first ambient temperature to a second environment having a second ambient temperature different from the first ambient temperature. For example, the device may be installed in an aircraft such that the second outer surface is thermally coupled to the exterior environment of the aircraft, for example via an outer wall of an aircraft fuselage. When the aircraft is gaining altitude, the outside temperature usually decreases and a temperature gradient forms between the first and second outer surfaces of the thermoelectric generator, that is, with a height change of several hundred meters, the outside temperature generally changes significantly. After a time, which depends in particular on the fluid used in the thermal energy storage and the thermal connection between the first outer surface and the thermal interface of the thermal energy storage, the fluid will undergo a phase change from liquid to solid and freeze. The temperature gradient will thus become smaller. If the aircraft now loses altitude, that is, if it is in descent, so usually increases the outside temperature and thus also the voltage applied to the second outer surface temperature. This creates a new temperature gradient and the thermoelectric generator generates electricity. This process is independent of daytime and nighttime. A thawing time or a freezing time of the fluid can be adjusted, for example, by preferably changing the ratio of water to salt accordingly. Furthermore, in particular a thermoelectric generator with a desired thawing or freezing time correspondingly adapted thermal resistance can be selected. As advantageous, a thawing time of at least 45 minutes has been found. It usually takes at least this time until an aircraft has been refueled and loaded or unloaded on the ground. Similarly, a temperature change can also be effected in a submersible vehicle by the submersible up or down and thus dives through different temperature layers of the water. The same applies, for example, to mountain railways that manage a large difference in altitude.
