Abstract
Process for impedance measurement on a passive network with the following process steps: applying a broadband signal to the network to be examined, comparison of the response signal with a threshold value and measurement of the delay time caused by the network until the threshold value is reached, with the progression of the step response step by step by varying the threshold value is scanned.
Description
The invention relates to a method for impedance measurement of a passive network according to the features of
Passive networks consist of passive components, ie components that, in contrast to active components such as transistors, have no amplifier effect, i.e. resistors, coils and capacitors. For example, the measuring electrodes of a capacitive fill level sensor or an electrical stripline can be regarded as passive networks. Ultrasonic or optical measuring sections are also possible.
The quotient of voltage and current in an alternating current circuit is referred to as the complex alternating current resistance Z in analogy to the direct current circuit. This consists of an effective resistance R (real part) and a reactance X (imaginary part). The alternating current resistance is also called impedance. In the case of a purely ohmic resistance, the impedance corresponds to the direct current resistance R. Since the reactance is frequency-dependent,
In the case of a non-sinusoidal curve of voltage or current, precisely because of this frequency dependency, no longer specify a clear reactance X.
However, since every periodic signal can be represented as a sum of sinusoidal signals of different frequencies, it is possible to superimpose different reactances, in which the different frequency components with the associated voltage or current amplitudes have to be taken into account.
A well-known measuring principle is to apply a broadband step function to the variable network to be examined and to evaluate the step response of the system.

The measured variables are temperature, force, pressure or displacement. The disadvantage is that only a single measured value is obtained which, as already stated above, ultimately represents a weighted sum of the frequency components contained in the input signal. Without knowledge of the network to be examined, the result is not very meaningful.
From the
When examining any passive networks, the need to know the characteristics of the network to be examined and the associated risk of loss of measurement accuracy proves to be a disadvantage. This applies in particular to the choice of the threshold value, which is essential for the measurement.
The complete profile of the step response is usually obtained by point-by-point sampling and digitization of the step response signal with the aid of an analog-digital converter with subsequent digital processing. In the case of fast processes, a transformation into the low frequency range by undersampling is often necessary. In this way, the course of the measured variable over time is obtained as a table of values in the form U = f (t), i.e. the measured variable as a function of time. The material effort as well as the measurement and computing time is considerable.
The object of the invention is to flexibly adapt the measurement effort to be carried out to the required measurement accuracy, in particular to keep the measurement and computing times low, and to specify a method for impedance measurement that at least partially overcomes the disadvantages of the known prior art, and one with low Expenditure required for very short step responses, preferably a method suitable for level or limit level measurement for conductive liquids, as well as the associated arrangement.
The basic idea of the invention is not to measure and record the voltage as a function of time, as is usual, but rather the time as a function of a predetermined comparator voltage. To this end, a broadband signal is applied to a measurement object or a measurement section in a known manner, and the time difference is measured until a predetermined threshold value is reached.
As a result, the complex and, above all, time-consuming analog-digital conversion can be replaced by a comparatively simple comparator circuit. In a particularly simple embodiment, the time measurement can even take place on the basis of the system clock of the microcontroller that is already present in all modern devices.
If this is not possible, the time difference between the step generator signal and the reaching of the comparator threshold is either demodulated by mixing or converted into a frequency. When converting to a frequency, this frequency can easily be evaluated with the aid of a counter.
The resulting function t = g (U) can also be reversed for further processing. By interchanging the axes, the inverse function U = f (t) required for processing is created. The only requirement is a reversible, unambiguous relationship between the two variables, ie a continuous step response of the network to be examined. The further processing can be carried out, for example, with a Fourier analysis. The equidistant time axis required for a Fourier transformation can be produced by interpolation.
The method according to the invention is therefore based on a variable threshold value, preferably a variable comparator voltage. In this way, an adaptation to the current measuring task can also take place during the measurement. This can be done by nesting intervals, but also by a sequence of, for example, logarithmically increasing threshold values. In this way, sampling times that are favorable for further processing can not only be set, but ultimately only one fixed sampling time can be used.
On the other hand, the network to be examined can be literally "scanned" with the help of variable threshold values. The number and height of the threshold values can be flexibly adapted to the respective measuring task. This allows you to set the desired ratio between the measurement effort and the desired measurement accuracy.
In this case, these threshold values can be generated by a pseudo-random generator, for example, according to a specific scheme.
If a Fourier transformation is provided for the further processing of the measured values, the comparator voltages can be designed on the basis of the information already available about the network to be examined or on the basis of measured values in such a way that almost equidistant time intervals arise. This means that interpolation is largely superfluous when forming the inverse function.
Furthermore, the variable network to be examined can be integrated into an oscillator. Thus, the time to be measured is converted into a variable frequency.
Another aspect of the invention is to make the intervals between the square pulses variable. This makes the system less susceptible to interference because not just a frequency but a frequency spectrum is evaluated. In addition, the unavoidable emission due to the open electrode arrangement is distributed over several fundamental waves.
The invention is explained in more detail with reference to the exemplary embodiments shown in the figures.
The operational amplifier OP1 works as a comparator. In the idle state, the inverting input is grounded. Because of the very high amplification, the output voltage Ua is approximately at the positive operating voltage. When a pulse from the generator G is applied to the network H, the voltage increases after a delay time essentially determined by the network H at the non-inverting input of the operational amplifier OP1. A typical signal curve for an essentially capacitive network H is shown in
A voltage jump Ue is applied to network H at time ta. The non-linear step response reaches the threshold value Us at time tm.
When the threshold value is reached, in this case the threshold voltage U1 = Us applied to the non-inverting input of OP1, the output voltage Ua drops to approximately zero volts. Typical delay times due to the ones in question Networks are between 20ns and 100ns. However, other times are also possible.
If the time between ta and tm cannot be measured directly by a microcontroller µC, the time difference is either demodulated and measured as a voltage or converted into a frequency signal.
With a variable comparator voltage U1, the entire course of the rising or, if necessary, the falling edge of the delayed square-wave pulse can be recorded. If there is no information about the curve to be expected, the threshold value is used; ie change the comparator voltage linearly. But since it is like in
Furthermore, it can be advantageous to first carry out a rough scan, and only potentially interesting, ie characteristic, areas of the in
In addition, there is the possibility of changing the pulse length or the pauses between the pulses according to a scheme generated, for example, by a pseudo-random generator. This can reduce both the susceptibility to interference and the interference from devices in the vicinity.
Messung und Auswertung erfolgen wie oben beschrieben.
Measurement and evaluation are carried out as described above.
The heart of the circuit is a relaxation oscillator driven by amplifier OP2, the frequency of which is initially determined by R1 and C1. By inserting the network H consisting of R6, Rg, R3 and C3, an additional delay is created, the length of which depends on the network H and the comparator voltage U1, ie the threshold value. The OR gate in the signal path has the effect that only one, namely the falling edge of the generated signal is influenced by the delay time of the measurement path, ie network H. The rising edge appears immediately at resistor R1. An asymmetrical square-wave signal is thus produced at the output of OP2, the high period of which is lengthened by the time that elapses to reach the respective threshold value Us = U1 at the output of network H.
The frequency of the oscillator is therefore a function of the delay time tm of the network H, which is dependent on the respective comparator voltage U1
Changing the comparator voltage U1 also changes the oscillator frequency.
The time shift t through the network H can be determined by measuring the period as a function of the comparator voltage U1. The period for a very low control voltage, for example, or the period that occurs when the connection between OP1 and the OR gate is broken, serves as a reference.
In this case, the gate input that is released must be connected to ground.
The following applies: t (U1) = tm (U1) - ta
The variation of the control voltage U1 (sweep) also leads to a sweep of the oscillator frequency. This improves the immunity to interference from external sources of interference and reduces the emission of interference signals.
The control voltage U1 can be provided directly by the microcontroller via a D / A converter, and the sequence of the sampling points can also be selected as desired.
In this way, a frequency hopping signal is created with the advantages mentioned above.
Another advantage of this oscillator circuit is that the evaluation can be carried out directly with the timer or counter of the microcontroller.
The evaluation can be carried out by comparing the complete measurement curve but also on the basis of or on the basis of significant areas with a target curve stored in the microcontroller, available through teach-in processes or as a table.
A switching process is triggered when there is a certain degree of deviation or agreement with a target curve.
Another possibility for the evaluation consists in this. To operate a measuring section and a reference section in parallel, with the measurement results of the reference section serving as target values.
At the output of the demodulator M, in this case it can be a NAND or a NOR gate, a square-wave signal is produced, the width of which is determined by the delay time of the passive network at the point on the measurement curve determined by the comparator voltage U1. The signal is fed to an A / D converter input of the microcontroller via the low-pass filter R1 / C1 and the amplifier OP2.
