Description
The The present invention relates generally to an electronic device with a digitally controlled oscillator (DCO).
The initial frequency accuracy, the frequency drift in the temperature and Voltage curve and the phase noise are in fully integrated Oscillators always worse than in a high Q resonator comprehensive oscillator. However, it is desirable RC oscillators to use in place of crystal oscillators, since these are completely in a CMOS technology can be integrated, reducing the complexity and the Production costs are reduced.

The however, both known oscillators described above are capable no sufficient accuracy with that of quartz oscillators would be comparable to reach.
It is an object of the present invention, an electronic device, including a digital oscillator, with improved accuracy and long-term stability to provide the oscillation frequency.
Corresponding the present invention provides an electronic device, comprising a digitally controlled oscillator ready. The digitally controlled Contains oscillator a programmable power source, a first variable capacitor and a second variable capacitor. A comparator is provided about the voltage drop over the controllable capacitors with a reference voltage level too compare and get a DCO output clock signal provide. A switching means switches the controllable capacitors alternately so that they either take a stream of the programmable one Power source received or in response to an output signal of Comparator be discharged. Furthermore, a clock divider with coupled to the comparator output to the DCO output clock signal by a factor N to share, which is much larger than 1 is to provide a divided clock signal. Furthermore becomes a frequency monitoring stage provided to receive the divided clock signal. The frequency monitoring level is set up so that it is the time difference between each other following clock periods of the divided clock signal and determined generates based on the specific time difference based feedback signal. The DCO is with the feedback signal coupled to the DCO output clock frequency in response to the Adjust feedback signal. An advantageous way of adjusting the DCO frequency is to adapt the capacitance values the controllable capacitors by the feedback signal. Preferably the factor N is chosen a period of the divided clock signal is proportional to a Fluctuation of the temperature or the supply voltage or a other due to wear and tear of the DCO output clock signal is. Advantageously, the monitoring stage set up to share pairs of successive ones Clock periods compares so that each divided clock period with a preceding shared clock period and with a following split Clock period is compared. This will result in an uninterrupted, constant and reliable Control ensured.
In a conventional DCO architecture, device characteristics such as resistances, capacitance values, delay times, and comparator offset voltages, etc. depend on the temperature and supply voltage. Even with a high accuracy reference voltage or current generator (eg, a bandgag reference voltage source), the overall achievable accuracy of the oscillator ranges from as low as 2% to 5%. The initial oscillator frequency can be easily adjusted by various means. The reference Current or the capacitors can be changed, for example, by an adjustment scheme. However, to bring the overall accuracy of the oscillator within the range of a quartz oscillator (eg, 20 to 50 ppm), further improvements are needed. Accordingly, the present invention proposes to select the factor N according to a fluctuation in temperature and / or a fluctuation caused by the supply voltage or any similar slow fluctuation to be compensated. As long as the variation is relatively slow compared to the oscillation frequency, the present invention provides a practical, simple and effective means for scaling the output frequency of the oscillator to the frequency variation. Therefore, it is a particular aspect of the invention to scale down a DCO output frequency to a range in which a clock frequency of a downscaled clock signal may be used as an indicator of frequency variation much slower than the DCO clock frequency. The way of determining the frequency fluctuation is differentiating and self-regulating, which means that consecutive clock periods of the downscaled clock are compared with each other and the comparison result is used to set the DCO frequency.
Preferably includes the frequency monitoring stage one adjustable current source, three calibration capacitors, one Comparator, a switching means to alternately one of the three calibration capacitors with the adjustable power source and two of the three calibration capacitors to couple with the second comparator to the voltage level in compare the calibration capacitors. It becomes a control agent provided to control the switching means so that any of the calibration capacitors during a period of the divided clock signal successfully with the stream from the controllable current source to a corresponding maximum voltage level is loaded. Then, in each clock period of the divided clock, two become consecutive maximum voltage levels are selected and compared by the comparator. A voltage ramp generates Reference signal. This voltage ramp is provided by the oscillator output stage sampled. The difference of the amplitudes in two consecutive Samples is a measure of Frequency drift or change and is used as input to a digital control block realized by the control means used. The output of the control block then controls the three calibration capacitors. To optimize the tuning process, the digital control block use an algorithm (eg a search algorithm), for example a binary one Weighting scheme. This way you can efficiently get both one Rough and fine tune the feedback loop.
Preferably the device further comprises a between the output of the second Comparator and the adjustable capacitors of the digitally controlled Oscillator coupled weighting stage for weighting the output signal of the second comparator. This weighting level may include a counter that increased or in response to the comparator output signal is lowered. The counter can be an up / down counter, so the counter value increased by 1 is when the voltage difference is positive, but when the voltage difference is negative, the counter value becomes reduced by 1. The output of the counter or an average of the counter then controls the capacitive arrangement by adjusting the capacitance of the first and the second capacitor up or down to the frequency drift to compensate for the output signal of the DCO. Although preferred is, the capacity of the DCO, so are other types of adjustment of the DCO frequency generally conceivable such as the setting a current in the DCO or a resistor.
Preferably Each of the variable capacitors includes two sections. By doing first section is the capacity in response to the feedback signal set, and in the second section there is a constant Capacitance value. This means that the fine-tuning of the DCO output signal by changing the capacity of the variable capacitors around their constant value can be.
The present invention also provides a method of adjusting the oscillation frequency of a digitally controlled oscillator. The method includes dividing the frequency of the output clock signal of the DCO, comparing the length of successive periods of the divided clock signal, and adjusting the output clock frequency of the DCO in response to the comparison result. The frequency drift of the DCO is mainly due to the oscillator's limited power supply rejection (PSR) and the temperature / voltage drift of device parameters. Therefore, the present invention proposes to establish a self-regulating mechanism in which the instantaneous frequency of the DCO oscillation frequency is determined at successive times. The difference of these measurement results (ie the difference in the length or duration of the different periods) is directly proportional to the frequency change and is advantageously used in a control circuit to reduce the error. Advantageously, a variable capacitor can be set in the DCO to tune the frequency. Furthermore, 1 always consecutive clock periods of the divided clock signal can be compared, and first a first Clock period of the divided clock signal compared with a second clock period, and next, the second clock period is compared with a third clock period. Accordingly, each clock period of the divided clock signal is compared to a predecessor and a successor before being released from the monitor, resulting in uninterrupted and reliable control. The method according to the present invention offers the advantage that the scheme does not apply an amplitude locked loop or phase locked loop scheme in which the oscillation frequency is compared to a reference signal. Instead, the circuit uses a predominantly digital tuning and matching scheme in a feedback arrangement, thereby providing a self-regulating DCO. Due to the predominantly digital design of the circuit, an extremely simple and space-saving realization of a fast acquisition scheme is made possible. No complex low-frequency analog filters are needed for the control loop. Furthermore, the present invention offers the advantage of reliable operation. There is also provided an area-saving implementation that has a wide operating frequency range (eg, 100 kHz-40 MHz). In addition, the variable current source providing power to the three capacitors can be realized so that it can be controlled based on the effective resistance of a single resistor. If such a resistor is externally implemented, ie not integrated with the other components on the same die, the high accuracy of the device depends only on an external resistance and can be easily adjusted.
Es zeigen:Further Advantages and features of the invention will become apparent from the below Description of a preferred embodiment with reference on the attached Drawings. Show it:
Two capacitors C A and C B are connected in parallel to each other via respective switches S1A and S1B between the voltage rail V AB and ground. Both capacitors C A and C B are also connected to the bus L 1, whose signal can be operated to change the capacitance of the capacitors C A and C B. The capacitor C A is also connected in parallel with a switch S2B, and the capacitor C B is connected in parallel with a switch S2A, so that the switches S2A and S2B are both connected to ground. The switch S2A is also connected to a node connecting the switch S1B and the capacitor C B , and the switch S2B is connected to a node connecting the switch S1A and the capacitor C A. The switches S1A and S2A may be operated to be controlled by the signal A output from the inverter INV1, and the switches S1B and S2B may be operated to be controlled by the signal B output from the inverter INV2. The switches can be realized for example by MOS transistors.
In operation, the comparator COMP compares the voltage drop across the variable capacitors C A and C B on the voltage rail V AB with the reference voltage Vref. The output signal of the comparator COMP is then the DCO output clock signal, which is generated based on the difference between the voltage V AB and the reference voltage Vref. When the voltage on the voltage rail V AB is greater than the reference voltage Vref, the output of the comparator COMP is po which means that the output signal A output from the inverter INV1 is negative and the output signal B output from the inverter INV2 is positive. This means that the switches S1A and S2A are opened and the switches S1B and S2B are closed, so that the capacitor C A discharges to ground via the closed switch S2B and the capacitor C B is charged by the reference current I 0 . When the voltage on the voltage rail V AB becomes lower than the reference voltage Vref, the output of the comparator is negative, and the opposite of the above occurs, so that the output A is positive and the signal B is negative. The switches S1A and S2A are closed, and the switches S1B and S2B are opened, so that the capacitor C B discharges to ground via the closed switch S2A and the capacitor C A is charged by the reference current I 0 . Thus, the capacitors C A and C B are alternately switched to either receive or discharge a current I 0 from the programmable current source Ipr, and the DCO periodically switches between charge and discharge of the capacitors C A and C B , whereby the output frequency of the DCO is generated.
